I googled the name of the game he's playing and the top few results were dowolf speedrunning the game at other events. I only checked out a minute or so, but he explained how none of the stats actually mean anything and that it's proper to never pick up a weapon because if you do, your attacks will be impaired by enemies' defense and you can't unequip weapons. Once I heard that, I knew I needed to save the rest for the real run.

as long as the category allows it, its fine. Single-segment would be something totally different. I will say that on a personal level I think runs of 3D games that mostly rely on OOB are pretty boring though

However there was an offhand comment when he was in the first game that they have to alter a file in Fallout 2 to allow an exploit; that seems like a step too far to me. Maybe he didnt explain it right but that seems like where a line should be drawn, when youre actually changing the games files.

I was joking. Although, questions on what it really means to beat a game are something that speedrunners have to deal with in some of the glitch heavy runs.

I wouldn't really be sure if the community knows best for a lot of things. I can't comment on Fallout 2 in particular but there's a certain level of groupthink and self-preservation inherent in a lot of long running communities that can poison the ability to be objective there even if they do know the game better than the masses. Lot of reasons I could think to allow that and many aren't really rooted in keeping the speed run pure or whatever-- could just be to make them more interesting which is good for viewership I guess but yeah.

Again can't speak for FO2 in particular but plenty of communities I wouldn't really trust to be objective about their game with decisions is all I'm saying

That is true, actually, but I bristle a little bit at how often people say something is cheating or unfair without really having full understanding of the game's speedrunning history and sometimes without having full understanding of the game itself

Like, these choices are made for a reason

I don't really wanna do the research so I'll give the benefit of a doubt, just didn't like the blanket statement is all.

I dont think he actually mentioned it again while playing FO2 or maybe I just missed it, but what he said while playing the first game was that you could press the 0 key to exit out of a certain dialogue, that they think it was a developer tool that they forgot to remove, and that this was fixed in Fallout 2 but that they alter a file in the game so they could use it at a certain spot.

Maybe what he meant was that it was fixed in a later revision and speedrunners revert to an earlier patch of the game? That I have no problem with.
