I probably want to see this for the opposite reason of most people since the two main stars are so bad Id prefer faceless Stormtroopers or Ewoks. Just gotta hope the parts that arent about them are good I guess.

Honestly, it didn't feel like they really showed anything new other than the tease of Rey and Kylo in the ruins of the Death Star throne room (which is admittedly hype), but it might be for the best that they don't show too much beforehand for this one.

as someone who has been rewatching the prequels for the first time in 20 years in introducing my girlfriend to the series the prequels being "so bad they're funny" is ridiculously overblown

they're just bad and mostly just really boring (Episode I in particular)

I saw all of them for the first time this year other than seeing Ep1-2 as a kid and forgetting all about them. The prequels do have some boring parts and bad parts, but some of the bad parts are funny and there are some cool parts in them. TLJ is better made, but I really hated it. It was torture to watch.

Pretty much. The bad dialogue from the prequels is funny when you isolate it in an out of context meme.

When you actually have to watch it, it isn't funny. It's cringe-inducing.

Yeah, I agree with this 100%.

The movies only become funny when trimmed down into gifs or abridged translations because the pacing is so awful

Yes, yes, yes.

Darths and Droids made me like the prequels a lot more. One hopes they could do the same for the sequel trilogy.

I said it a couple years ago in a B8 topic and I'll stand by the claim: after watching The Phantom Menace for the first time in ages, I was left considering it one of the worst "not intentionally trying to be schlock" movies I've ever seen. Uninteresting plot, uninteresting characters, horrible dialogue with wooden acting, and poorly aged effects. Totally agree that the memes (which are amazing) and the movie are NOT one and the same.

Episode II was similarly shitballs but was redeemed somewhat by the subplot where Obi-Wan investigates the clone army alone. Those scenes actually had a layer of intrigue and are easily the best part of the first two movies imo.

Anyway, this trailer is hype. Finally a massive space battle in a mainline Star Wars film again. Revenge of the Sith had one, I guess, but it was right at the very beginning and had prequel problems out the wazoo.

The water stuff is kind of Kamino-esque, which is great because Kamino is legitimately a beautiful world. The Rey/Kylo content looks spectacular, which is also good because theyre the heart of this trilogy and the very best part.

I'm glad to see a little bit of backlash against this bizarre, sudden love of two bad movies as a sort of anti-Disney measure. Nothing more bizarre than the retrospective love of the prequels as a sort of exaggerated way of bashing the sequel trilogy.

Revenge of the Sith opens with the Battle of Coruscant, which is a battle in space between Republic and CIS (Separatist) forces. Like with The Last Jedi, the space battle setpiece happens at the very beginning.

In neither of those cases is it especially great, and by no means up there with ANH/ROTJ/Rogue Ones bigger, climactic fare.

I think The Rise of Skywalker stands a decent shot of joining their ranks.

Also, Ghost from Star Wars: Rebels has been spotted in the front lines in that Resistance fleet shot, which is glorious news for diehard fans of the Disney stuff like I am.

holy shit, these are exactly my opinions

episode 1 is completely awful and irredeemable, episode 2 is nearly that except Obi-Wan's subplot is actually surprisingly solid (and even includes a genuinely good action scene with Jango Fett on the rainy planet) but the rest of it is horrid

I also hate episode 3 though, I don't get why people elevate it over the other two, it's like kiiinda more iconic and less boringly paced but that's sorta it

I would say I'm amazed at the prequel bashing in this topic, but if The Nostalgia Critic can keep taking shots at them...

The trailer is pretty nice, but I dunno, I just do not feel invested enough in the ongoing trilogy to want to see this. I vaguely remember liking TFA and found TLJ more unengaging than truly bad, but neither film did much for me in the long run.

It's actually kind of nice to see optimism in this topic instead of dread. Feels like a lot of the places where Star Wars fans typically congregate online are the ones most likely to attract people who loathe TLJ and the film's audience reception is otherwise generally good.

Basically, TLJ is not divisive in the typical way, it's more universally-hated by a subset of the Star Wars fanbase and generally well-liked otherwise.

Yeah, the Obi-Wan subplot in Episode II was the thing I remembered being pretty good from seeing it for the first time, and it's still pretty cool now.

Episode III had potential since it has so much fighting and less time for boring, uninteresting scenes where the characters are just sitting around and talking, so it's the best one for that reason alone, but I'd still hesitate to call it "good."

I actually kind of like Kylo Ren as a character. My biggest gripe with the sequel trilogy is the evil faction being very nebulously-defined to the point it's hard for me to get invested in the story. Kylo's the exception to that, but I understand why people think he doesn't make a good villain.

That said, he's probably a more fleshed-out character than Darth Vader was at this point in the OT.

I think whether Kylo is a good villain / character or not will be definitively defined in this final film.

I think it's a combination of the prequels somehow fitting better with the franchise, people who watched them as kids growing up, and the idea that the sequels are worse just because they are made for primarily commercial reasons.

At least one big flaw with The Last Jedi - the excessive amount of Hollywood Tactics - plagues the prequels too.
