Watched the first episode of Blade of the Immortal. Interesting in concept, but holy shit it had a lot of flashing bright colours that REALLY turned me off. Gave me a headache watching it.

Watched the first episode of the latest season of the Seven Deadly Sins. Good start, but it's weird to see them introduce characters again.

I didn't like what I watched of yuru camp but am really enjoying dice club so it's probably not too related

though in my case I think a lot of it is the subject matter. board games are a pretty big thing to me and honestly I feel like this show captures the boardgame playing experience pretty well. also helps that kyoto dialect is 10/10

The first dubbed episode of Demon Slayer aired on Toonami tonight, so I tried it out and it was pretty solid. Haven't seen any of the fabled "smol Nezuko" yet though... maybe next week.

If there is something good I can say about Rifle is Beautiful is it skipped the typical school club tropes of spending half the season recruiting members before actually doing the club activity. The rest was... meh so far.

The first episode of Chidori RSC (they had to change the English title because apparently even just having the word rifle in the title would upset people) was decent. You can definitely tell this was adapted from a 4koma due to the rapid fire quick gags, but even for 4koma adaptation standards, it felt faster than normal with very little "padding" between the gags. But it did the job of getting us introduced to the girls and the club/sport, so it's up to the next couple of episodes to keep us interested. However...

Oh yeah I finished Granbelm yesterday cuz I waited for the full moon <_<

Really fun show, the ending was sweet. Gundam references I noticed:

Shingetsu using the strings on foot was likely a Char's Counterattack homage, Amuro did something similar with a rocket launcher.

Suisho's end was quite nearly a 1:1 of Scirocco in Zeta Gundam and I believe the preview narrator was Nobuo Tobita, who voiced the protagonist Kamille.

Very fitting. Episode 11 (when Mangetsu gave her emotional speech to reassure Shingetsu that she's making the right decision) aired on the night of a full moon, and the series finale would have aired on the night of a new moon if it wasn't pushed a day earlier for some reason. So the best ending would have been watching the finale on the new moon, but I could understand not wanting to wait a whole two more weeks for that.

That would've been wicked neat. I couldn't wait two weeks though, even a couple of days was long enough.

So all in all, how did you like the series?

Very much enjoyed watching, might be the best modern mecha I've seen since '08 or so. Solid magical girl series as well. Ultimately all the girls had sympathetic and/or likeable aspects, the ending was bittersweet with an emphasis on sweet and the SD mechs were highly agreeable. If I did a 3x3, Granbelm could very likely have a place.

That's some high praise coming from someone like you who's seen so many mecha anime. Granbelm went so underwatched and underappreciated as it aired (it was part of one of the most stacked Friday lineups I've ever seen) so every single person I hear say they like it makes me happy.

Yep I guess so! But it really was that good. Much as I love em for the characters, action and machines, most robot shows either run too long or have inconsistent endings. Granbelm had all the excellent stuff, plus the right length and ending to boot.

Oh lord this is a tricky one. Literally anyone of them could be best girl, they were all pretty neat in their own way. I guess I gotta break it down to head, heart and gut feelings.

Head

Suisho was logically speaking, the most interesting. I didn't like her at first but she grew on me largely due to her character history and Aoi Yuki's range and skill as a voice actress. She really sold the role.

Heart

Kuon's sister. She basically stole every scene she was in, Yukari Tamura does both sweet and psycho quite well. Comfortable character design and out of all the hinted at events, I'd dig seeing a spin off or sequel about her time in Granbelm the most. Also was said to smell like Setsgetsu Baika, which was my favorite of the Armanox.

Gut

Anna, she had the most sympathetic/bittersweet motivations, her character design was ferocious and you know, Yoko Hikasa could yell right alongside Akira Kamiya and I wouldn't bat an eye.

So I think overall, Anna was the best girl for me with Kuon's sister being a close runner up.

Now I'll ask the same back, who was your best girl (and which of the Armanox did you like the most)?

Definitely. As for your picks, I totally agree that Aoi, Yoko, and Yukarin did fantastic jobs voicing those characters you mentioned... and the fact that you liked those voices in particular means that I should start trying to convince you to watch Symphogear and Lyrical Nanoha now too.

I liked all of the girls as well, but my contest for best girl was actually between Nene and Mangetsu. I thought Nene being totally cool with helping out as the main crew's support/intel girl even after being eliminated from Granbelm was neat. Her shut-in personality manifesting itself through her Armanox being better at long-range combat was really interesting too, and of course I just flat-out liked the fact that she was cute and smol.

As for Mangetsu, I not only found her story and character development across the series really interesting, I ended up really sympathizing with her. The feeling of being "just there" and not feeling special or important at all is something that I've struggled with before in my own life. I enjoyed her energy, her early-series optimism (before the suffering kicked into high gear), and her mid-series battle mania as well. Overall, I'd have to give Mangetsu the #1 spot, but Nene was a close second and I liked all of them in some way.

For my favorite Armanox, I'd probably have to say Shingetsu's Viola Katze. I liked its look the most, plus it was (IMO) the most fun to watch fight because of how many tricks and attacks Shingetsu was able to use in battle. As I mentioned earlier, Nene's Ji Guan Long was just a great design choice for her in particular, and it transforming into a more melee-capable form during her battle with Mangetsu as she realized that she had friends and didn't want to just be a shut-in anymore was a great punctuation mark on her battle. So those would be my top two.

TL;DR: Mangetsu was best girl, Shingetsu had the best Armanox, but Nene was the best combination of both.

Chris just has a lot of guns. That's it, and the absolute closest thing to anything even remotely mecha, honestly. Powerful guns in Nanoha doesn't make them mecha either. You could claim DBZ is a mecha for that same logic then.

Episode 3 of Kemono Michi was hilarious, and the dragon loli is 110% best girl. Since the simuldub started today as well, I went back and watched episode 1 with its English dub... I'm not a fan of it so far. Pending who ends up voicing the dragon loli, I think I'm going to stick to subbed for this one.

I also went back and gave After School Dice Club another chance with its English dub, and the opposite happened. The cast (especially Aya's dub VA, excellent performance there!) and script for the dub made the episode much more enjoyable than it was the first time around.

I can see why people are turned off the first episode of Kemono Michi. They definitely made him out to be a furry and kinda weird about animals, and some people are uncomfortable by that sort of stuff.

Episode 3 of Azur Lane was a nice cooldown episode without any major battles. Just a beach scene, Enterprise being a gloomy edgelord, San Diego getting eaten by a shark, Saratoga carpet-bombing the aforementioned shark, and Belfast showing off her huge... torpedoes.



I also rewatched episode 1 with its English dub. The dub cast so far is pretty solid, and they fittingly gave the Royal Navy ships British accents which sounded pretty good. I think I'll stick to following it subbed so I can be part of the weekly discussions, but it'll be worth a dubbed re-watch later on.
