This is seemingly all pre-time skip content, though if this does well, maybe we'll get to the post-time skip content where it gets absolutely bonkers phenomenal. The story is an isekai, but it's incredibly grounded. It deals with a main character who, unlike most isekais, retain a lot of the traumas and failures of his previous life before he gets another chance as he awkwardly attempts to save 2 high school students from a car crash. In this new life in a new world, he strives to overcome the shadows of his past one by one and live this new life to the absolute fullest. That's the background of course, but the appeal is the world building and its myriad of interesting and complex characters that have their own motivations and history in relation to major events of the world. Rudeus isn't exactly an overpowered hero. He's just a guy who's living his new life as diligently as possible, and as a result he constantly finds himself in a middle of countless complicated situations that's been developing with or without him. It isn't like most isekais where he has to solve every problem by brute force, or problems that happened because the world isn't applying some very dumb basic logic that a stupid anime japanese boy just says with a nonchalant look on his face. It's more about a guy making bonds, studying the world, and eventually overcoming and living life one step at a time. That being said, the parts the anime will cover... I can't say it will be the greatest thing ever? As Rudeus is still a kid, he still doesn't know all there is to the world. He's forced into various situations where he has to learn as much about the world as quickly as possible. The story truly shines when all of that knowledge comes into play, where when a conflict happens, you know exactly the history and the reason for why that is happening because it was established beforehand. Through the resolution you know how it directly affects either the world or in Rudeus' circle of acquaintances' lives. But yeah the animation looks freaking fantastic. Vinland Saga - Not AS good as early hypers made it out to be, but it continues to improve. Fire Force - Damn fantastic! RETURNING SERIES My Hero Academia S4 - ... it's MHA. Fuck yes. Radiant S2 - I really enjoy Radiant. It will never be one of the "big three" for Shonen or anything, but it's enjoyable like Fairy Tale. 7 Deadly Sins S...4? - I put it on the same level as DBZ. It's not the best in terms of narrative or character development, but those fucking fights are awesome. NEW ANIME THIS SEASON Babylon - Excellent intro to the series, intriguing premise. Definitely could be a sleeper hit akin to Banana Fish last year Houkago Saikoro Club - Cute girls playing board games. Gives me Yuru Camp vibes. Yay! Hataage! Kemono Michi - Animal lover wrestler who suplexes the princess when he was Isekai'd away and asked to kill monsters? I hope some of the weird furry vibes calm down into the future episodes... Hoshiai No Sora - The guy who did Escaflowne is doing an anime about... teens playing soft tennis? Sure! Kabuki-Chou Sherlock - New age Sherlock Holmes in an anime all about competitive detectives trying to solve the same cases? Oh, also, instead of his "mind palace" he does Rokugo to talk out his deductions? Fuck. Yes. Beastars - Take one part Zootopia, one part theatre drama, and mix in a lot of social commentary and you get an impressive, if not odd looking, anime. DROPPED ALREADY Africa No Salaryman - I really hated the animation in it, and the Toucan is gratingly annoying. The Lion is awesome though. Mugen No Juunin - I actually got a headache while watching with all the flashing bright white they use as contrasting shots. Too many anime to watch one that gives me a headache. (Oddly I have the same issue with Hotline Miami, as that also gives me a headache) Keishichou Tokumu Bu - That first episode was just not impressive at all. You have this weird juxtaposition between what feels like they wanna do a gritty police procedural, mixed with characters that are superhuman, in a world where humans live with beings like Elves, Dwarves, and Giants? It just didn't work for me at all. Also it annoys me when they in one shot try to make it gritty and realistic, and then later in the episode you have a character who can, AFTER A MACHINE GUN IS SHOT, can jump in the way of the bullets and slice them all in half with a sword. I mean, if you want that kind of world sure, but then make the world reflect that kind of ability. Calwings 10/19/19 8:14:58 PM #223:	CONTINUING SERIES: Black Clover - This last arc has been fantastic and Asta ~~& Yuno~~ vs. ~~Licht~~ was the best fight of the series so far. Dr. Stone - The show has been more fun than I expected, and the most recent episode (14 since I'm watching the dub) was stupid fun, but I feel like it ended way too happy and something's going to ruin it next episode. I just have that nagging feeling in the back of my mind. Fire Force - It's been declining a bit, but the next few episodes could be really interesting. The lack of best girl Iris in this arc sucks. Star Twinkle Precure - One word: NEW THIS SEASON: Azur Lane - Off to a fantastic start, great balance of action, drama, cuteness, and fanservice. I'd probably enjoy it more if I played the mobage too, but oh well. Laffey has an early lead for best girl, but Cleveland is cool too. After School Dice Club - I was going to drop it, but the English dub script made the first episode way more enjoyable than it was subbed. I'm essentially giving it the "three episode chance" all over again with the dub, so we'll see in two weeks where it falls. Aya is best girl by far. Kandagawa Jet Girls - It's blatant fanservice in a mediocre show, not much else to say about it. The memesubs make it a lot more fun. Rin is best girl because she's a genki dork and she owns a Dyson fan, and I have a Dyson fan so I know they're fucking rad. Kemono Michi - It's just flat-out hilarious, and the rare action scenes are animated way better than I would have expected. I could do without the "wierd furry vibes" as Jeff said above, but overall, I'm really enjoying the show. Hanako is best girl and it's not even close. Rifle Is Beautiful - The first episode was cute, and I found it hilarious how they resolved the cliche "oh no we need to get enough members to save the club" plotline in like four minutes to hurry along to the slice-of-life stuff. Not enough info to pick a best girl yet, but learning towards the main girl with the ribbon. Also, do these two look like Rei and Asuka from Evangelion to anyone else? The Asuka look-alike is even half-European like her. SHORTS: ShoujoConto All Starlight - It's so stupid but I love it. These shorts are doing a great job at giving the girls from the other schools (that debuted in the mobile game) more personality and life compared to even the game itself. Plus they're pretty funny, and episode 5 was a glorified shitpost. Girls Frontline: Healing Chapter - Three episodes have been aired in Japanese (the original Chinese airing is up to 13, but I wanted to hear Yukari Tamura and the game's Japanese voice cast so I waited) and it's been really cute. Can't wait for the ~~SOP Jr.~~ episode. I don't have any returning sequel shows and I haven't dropped any shows yet. Overall, this is a pretty dry season for me, even more so if Dice Club and Rifle don't pass the three episode tests. It wasn't quite as good as either of the two Selector WIXOSS seasons, but I still really enjoyed it. Suzuko was a really fun protagonist (not as good as Ruuko though), her LRIG Riru was awesome, and ~~Satomi~~ was an incredible villain. The slow drip of revealing how deep the story went and how the new batch of Selector battles were quite literally built on the ruins of the previous battles got me hooked, and the battles themselves were animated really well this time around. The introduction (or rather, return) of one certain character was a major turning point in me enjoying the show a lot. This season was certainly way darker than its predecessor though. Selector had some dark moments, but it never showed a person just ~~straight up jump off a fucking bridge to their death~~. In general, the actual "cute girls suffering" aspect of the show wasn't as well-executed, and it felt like there were more "dark for the sake of dark" moments that seemed out of place. I also felt like the secondary protagonist Chinatsu wasn't developed well enough. She did have her moments though, and Yuka Iguchi's voice really brought out her twisted personality. Overall, I give it an 8/10. I also thought a lot more about how I rated the Selector seasons and lowered them from the 10's I gave them in the moment to 9's.
