A software update could make the rule that the accelerator being pressed all the way down for more than, say, half a second is probably an unintended input that should be ignored. Boom, problem solved.
First off, that would imply killing the motor if you were doing it deliberately for whatever reason.
Second, that's not an excuse to not fix a serious design flaw that could get you stuck on the road waiting for a towtruck, if not leaving you in the middle of a highway.
