What was your first anime? Did you know what anime was when you started watching it?

I watched Astroboy and Speed Racer as a child without really knowing the difference between it and other cartoons. The first anime I remember watching where I was keenly aware that it was made in a different country and then dubbed over here was Sailor Moon.

Following that, I of course saw Pokemon, and Digimon, and then Dragon Ball Z, etc. etc.The first anime I ever went out of my way to acquire by purchasing however?

What was your first anime? Did you know what anime was when you started watching it?

The first anime that I ever watched at all = Pokemon and Sailor Moon (both around the same time, can't remember which one was actually first)
The first anime that I ever finished = Cardcaptors (not knowing it was the chopped up Nelvana dub and not the real Cardcaptor Sakura)
The first anime that I watched knowing it was anime = Outlaw Star (it's also what made me a real anime fan)
The first anime that I looked for online because I heard about it but it wasn't on TV = Princess Nine

That was the beginning of my journey towards weebdom. Cardcaptor Sakura, Outlaw Star, and Princess Nine are still three of my favorite and most cherished anime even to this day, and the main characters of those are still among my favorite characters of all time as well.

probably pokemon. Not that I really comprehended what anime was. Back then I'd mostly watch like... roadrunner and stuff, and I didn't even really understand that a cartoon could have a continuous plot thread. I also distinctly remember strongly disliking both DBZ and yugioh even as a kid, to this day I've never watched more than a handful of episodes of either one.

First anime I actually went out of my way to watch was cardcaptor sakura. I'm not sure quite why. Maybe it's because I remembered seeing an episode or 2 on TV like 10+ years previously and looked it up again??? after finishing that I watched tsubasa chronicle since it was the same characters and after that was probably death note or haruhi or something like that

First waifu (and this is gonna sound silly since this is the anime and other things general) was the elf girl from eragon lol. I don't even remember her name anymore <__<

Not really an anime first but since they're probably more important to me in jp media than anime is: my first VN was fate stay night. Yeah, fairly normal one. After that I read tsukihime for same author and then kanon. Over 9 years later and probably getting close to 100 VNs and I still get extremely nostalgic for the kanon title screen bgm. Just hearing the first few notes instantly brings me back to those days at around the time I was graduating from high school

First VN I finished in japanese (since that was also a big milestone for me) was harumade kururu. Which I think actually has a TL release coming up soon? I'd tried a lot of jp VNs before this but this is the first one that was interesting enough to really stick with and finishing it was a pretty great feeling confidence boost.

the style of this one (claudine + hangers-on) reminds me of a lot of the songs from the actual live musical performance that I thought were really out of place at the time but ended up kinda liking a lot after they had some time to sink in

First anime
Definitely Robots in Disguise, I remember waking up on Saturday to watch it on FoxBox. There were others after that, the typical young uns watching of course (Pokemon, Digimon, YuGiOh) but RiD was the first. Didn't know the difference between cartoons or anime until YuGiOh, I think.


First anime I sought out
Cowboy Bebop, got the old Bandai Entertainment DVD set and enjoyed every minute of it


First waifu
I dunno, this I'd have to ruminate on. Probably whichever dark skinned girl I saw first, I'm not sure as to that though.

Other firsts
Battle Network 3 was the start of my long heartfelt feelings towards Capcom and the Mega Man series, yeah I'd played Mario and Zelda before but BN was the first game I sought out knowing what it was. Even all these years later my idealized mental image of a connected world is full of CyberSpace, PETs and NetNavis.
This also plays into the first manga I sought out, which was the NT Warrior manga. The first manga I finished though was Rurouni Kenshin, which I held dear for many years and felt rather shocked about when the news about Watsuki broke.
Only other first I can think of is first VN, which in fact was Rewrite. It went completely against my tastes and I read it on the recommendation of my good friend, but overall it was quite the enjoyable experience.

First anime I had to search for online
I was always big into anime from watching Toonami as a kid (since the end of the '90s), but I didn't really start seeking out new shows on my own until like 2007 or 2008. It was probably either Karin or Doki Doki School Hours, the latter I didn't even finish until just last year because my original watch-through on YouTube stopped being subbed in English halfway through.

First Visual Novel
A pretty heavy read, but it was Umineko. I was the one person who actually enjoyed the anime, and wanted to see how it all ended.

First anime:
Doraemon, probably. That series was everywhere when I was little.
First anime I actively followed on TV was Saint Seiya though, but even then just because it aired right before Kamen Rider.

First anime watched fully:
The King of Braves GaoGaiGar. Super hype and intense mecha show. I remember hunting down all the CDs over a few months, since the TV broadcast was cut short.

First fansubbed anime:
They Are My Noble Masters. Butler comedy with tons of fanservice. It's an adaptation of a VN and covered only up to the end of the common route, so it cut off before any romance could develop much. Still gave a decent conclusion to the MC's character arc though, so that's something.

First waifu:
Kaname Madoka. Still my only waifu.

First manga:
Doraemon, more or less because my family wouldn't let me near any other manga up until middle school.
Aside from that, Home Tutor Hitman Reborn. Was super popular over here when I was in middle school. It's a Shonen Jump comedy series about super-powered "mafia" that got super serious as it went on. The middle arcs were kinda weak but had lots of cool characters, which made the DS fighting games covering those arcs the better ones of the bunch. Then the very last arc ended up being the funniest while also being the most serious. It's weird.

First LN:
Shakugan no Shana. Unfortunately the publisher released only up to volume 14 before they went under, and I never continued it since. Anime season 3 supposedly covers the rest of the series fairly well and I've been watching that on and off, but I'm thinking about getting the rest of the LNs some time soon.

So the other day I was at the thrift store and found this cursed abomination, so I had to add it to my collection

So Yu-Gi-Oh VRAINS has finally ended... the first Yu-Gi-Oh anime to do badly enough that they just cut it short and didn't even bother going the original length it was planned to be. It's a damn shame. VRAINS avoided starting off really bad like ZEXAL, and it avoided finishing really bad like ARC-V, but more importantly, it never really got very good at any point either. It was just average throughout, with very little to help it stand out.

The final duel was pretty good though. I thought Accesscode Talker's effect using 6 different attributes of Link monsters (likely to symbolize all of the other Ignis) was a really nice touch, and having Playmaker's original ace Decode Talker inflict the final blow was cool too.

You have excellent taste. Magical girls and girls voiced by Aoi Yuuki are always prime waifu material, and she's both of those together.

First LN:

The third season of the anime does cover all the way to the end, but it's a bit rushed due to how much they had to cram into it. It's still better than the usual open-ended "go read the LN to see the rest of the story" treatment that most LN series get.

Well, I'm not even sure what my first manga was since I've basically never been that into manga. Probably qualia purple or whatever that was called. Also, I never finished it. Also also, it wasn't even originally a manga so it's an extra lame answer <__<

LN is easier since I've only read 1: a single volume of classroom of the elite from where the anime left off. I should probably get back to that it was sort of neat

Finished Yamato S1 and Dirty Pair

Yamato review in brief:
Kinda dumb at points but the good heavily outweighs the bad
I thought Analyzer and Sanada were the stand out characters, rest of crew were middling or I disliked
Episode 24 was the best by far, really good message
Definitely can see why it impacted anime as it did, with both copycats and challengers
Good watch, let's say 9/10

Dirty Pair review in brief:
Funny funny show, honestly one of the best Japanese comedies I've seen
Kei and Yuri were both great, consistent in their personalities and approaches to each case. At first I judged em against each other but stopped before mid-way, they're too perfect
Cameos from both East and West sci fi and other Sunrise shows were fun to spot, I could tell the staff had a fun time slipping stuff in
Action and mechanical design were on point too
Overall I would rate it a 10/10, I think only two episodes were inconsistent in animation quality and the detail and skill in the last two more than made up for it. Definitely would watch again.

I wish this line had made it into the anime...



But seriously, Demon Girl Next Door was a lot of fun. It wasn't the best show of the season, but it was cute and fun and I really enjoyed it.

Just watched the Granbelm finale and it was incredible. The final battle, the final "test" after the battle, the beautiful but bittersweet ending, it was all beautiful. I'm definitely giving this show at least a 9, but I'll think about it for a week or so and I might change to giving it a 10 in the end.

Finished Betterman and with that my schedule is done.

Review in brief:
Mechanical, monster and character designs were fantastic
Setting was very rich
Some of the most unique anime I've seen in terms of plot, animation, lighting and camera angles
Takehito Koyasu bonus points

However, that ending was an absolute MESS, I've got no clue what the hell they were thinking. Immediately it brought to mind Layzner's TV ending...only Layzner had the excuse of being cancelled at the eleventh hour and redeemed by the excellent OVA conclusion. If even one element had changed (a satisfactory fight scene, characters surviving or the two mains coming together), it would have been a perfect show.

As things stand, I'm disappointed by the ending but I did enjoy most of the program. Can't rate it other than to say it's not a top 3 anime like I was hoping, but isn't the worst that I've seen either

The very same. It's also a Studio 3Hz creation, and they've been responsible for some of my favorite shows in the past few years, like Flip Flappers, Princess Principal, and SAO Alternative: Gun Gale Online. I've never seen a bad show from them (Dimension W was the weakest I saw and even that one was pretty good) and they also have Rifle Is Beautiful airing next season, which I'm excited to watch.
