Do you think the NFL/NCAA study what sorts of things make people turn the channel.

Because I *always* flip away from any instant replay review unless it's a combination of not obviously correct on the field, likely to influence the final outcome of the game, and takes less than 2 minutes.

Any violation of any of those things and I'm turning the channel. Maybe I'll turn it back to the game I was watching before at some point. But maybe not.

I agree with this and if it happens it would show the inherent SEC bias that the rankings have. The SEC has earned it over the years but it's still frustrating because let's say the following happens

LSU beats Alabama and Alabama wins the rest of their games

Alabama would have 1 ranked win on their schedule
If Ohio State loses to Penn State but otherwise wins out, they would have 3 ranked wins
If Penn State loses to Ohio State but otherwise wins out, they would have 3 ranked wins
If Oklahoma wins out they would have 3-4 ranked wins
If Oregon or Utah wins out they would have 2 ranked wins

Yet we all know it is very likely Alabama would either be top of that pile or second top despite having the least ranked wins and the vast majority of their schedule being against teams with losing records.

Minnesota, who we have all trashed for having a shitty SOS, have played as many .500 teams as Alabama has so far this season (2)

And Minnesota hasn't been championship relevant for 70 years...so yeah. I'll take "What the fuck they are undefeated and ranked?" right now.

From what I can tell on Sagarin, Alabama are ranked 61st for SOS.

I know some of these are lower than the total number of teams and that's because it includes FCS teams too

When undefeated UCF were dismissed due to SOS, their SOS was similar to Alabama's right now (I want to say it was like 69-70)

And yeah I know Alabama pass the eye test too so I'm not saying they are undeserving of being a playoff team. Just pointing out that SEC teams never have their SOS questioned and it's just assumed they have a strong SOS when that sometimes is not the case

They never have their SOS questioned because they play in the toughest conference, or so it goes.

Also kinda funny that a 1 loss Cincinnati will never ever enter the equation for playoff consideration even though their SOS is better than P5 1 loss teams who could be in the equation and it's not like their loss was to a bad team (They lost to Ohio State on the road). Granted it was a hammering but Ohio State just did the same thing to Wisconsin and we will have to see if they do it to other ranked teams too.

In general or do you mean this year? Because Cincinnati should be commended for their scheduling where they seem to try schedule 2 P5 teams a year and don't shy away from playing big teams. In recent years they have scheduled Michigan, Ohio State and UCLA. In upcoming years they have Notre Dame, Nebraska, Indiana, Arkansas scheduled.

Like yeah some of those aren't good but at least they are trying to schedule big name teams in amongst that bunch. And the AAC does seem to be improving. Memphis, UCF and Houston have been good in recent years. Cinci have had a good 2 years. Navy are never awful and are awkward to play against. SMU are having a good year this year but that's an outlier compared to recent years.

If an AAC team goes unbeaten (or has 1 loss to a clear playoff team) and has non-terrible P5 teams scheduled OOC then I think they should be at least considered if they also pass the eye test. I don't think the AAC is that far off the ACC (outside Clemson) right now, granted the ACC seems to have a few of their big teams going through down years right now

I'm sure UCLA would love to take back their home and home with Cinci who beat them both times.

oh their scheduling is good, I just suspect they're not that great a team. I think they'll probably lose at least 1 in the American and it'll be a moot point.

Oh I don't think they are a playoff team but I also think they are better than people will give them credit for. They went 11-2 last season and then this season their only loss is to Ohio State who have made every team look bad.

Also, the AAC's record against the P5* is better than the ACC's record against the other P5* conferences both this year and last year. Both weren't very good though (3-8 vs 4-10 and 7-13 vs 7-12)

I mean I'm an Ohio State fan so it's not like I don't benefit from the P5 bias and that big name teams get the benefit of the doubt.

I just hate that there's so much bias in the rankings. The fact that we start with a baseline from preseason rankings (that are worthless) and then stick stringently to it. It should be based off what we see on the field and name or conference shouldn't come into it. Yeah strength of opponent matters too but people just assume the P5 teams are better even when sometimes they aren't

But you're right, it's never going to change because rankings are basically for TV purposes anyway and so they have to be slanted towards the bigger teams / conferences

True story: Despite being 0-8, Akron is mathematically alive for a bowl bid due to the fact that they can still win the MAC (which would override their losing record as per the precedent set by North Texas in 2001).

For starters, they'd have to go 4-0 to stand even a remote chance of winning their division, what with the co-leaders yet to play each other. Luckily, Akron still has to play both of them as well so they'd definitely get the tiebreakers at 4-4. From there it's a pretty straight shot--Kent State has enough games left against the opposite division that they could win their lone remaining divisional game and still wind up 3-5 in conference, and if they do so, Buffalo would only need to not win any cross-division games to also end up 3-5.

I mean, obviously this isn't going to happen. But it's still hilarious that an 0-8 team is still mathematically alive to win their division, and as such, could wind up as a 5-8 conference champion.

Man, what a train wreck the MAC is this year, especially the East.

The Beavers picked up ANOTHER road conference win yesterday, and they stay in sole possession of 2nd place in the Pac-12 north!

Indiana now has 7 wins and with Purdue on the schedule is almost certain to finish with at least 8. Although basically none of them are against anyone good, as the middle/bottom of the Big Ten is laughably bad this year, and they managed to duck Iowa, Minnesota, AND Wisconsin, the top 3 teams from the west...

The NCAA rules are stupid but even as an Ohio State fan I can see this is potentially problematic if the money came from a booster or an agent.

Seems the money was just for a flight for his girlfriend to the Rose Bowl too so not even anything ridiculous

Also 4 games is such a cop out. Kind of convenient that the NCAA will suspend him but will make sure he's back for the biggest games (I.e. Big 10 Championship if we make it and Bowl Game / Playoffs where applicable)

Got to punish him but they can't risk losing a star player for their big money games!

It should either be a 1 game suspension or for the season imo.
