I am quite partial to Sephiroth absolutely eviscerating Mario twice.

"This dude spends two months dominating the main bracket and Sephiroth treats him like the Midgar Zolom" - paraphrased from transience I think.

Loathe as I am to admit it though, Link nearly beating Draven was probably the most impressive thing. Literally EVERYTHING was against Link. He had looked weaker than ever that year. He had Commander Shepard (Fuck you Mass Effect fans, don't think you're off the hook for this in my eyes) holding him back. He had the biggest rally of all time staring him down.

He had the administrator of the website collaborating with the outside rally.

And he still almost won. It is mind boggling to think that if SBAllen didn't condone and collaborate with the rally, Link would have pulled off the comeback.

Watching the day/after-school vote of his in action against Draven that day was something to behold. If he had capped the comeback, it would've been the most amazing thing we'd ever seen.

And think, the backlash from LoL fans in the following round might have gotten Snake the victory! Damn you, Allen.

Sephiroth > Mario in 2005 is a great one to bring up and one of the reasons I think the "8 legends" will tear through the guys that reach them (with a Mario > Sephiroth revenge result to cap things off). By holding back the classic guys until the end, we're building up hype for their arrival and minimizing the anti-votes that build up against them throughout a typical contest.

Anyway, I'll pick a random one and say Kefka winning two rounds in 2013. He gave us glimpses of legit strength by beating Arthas in 2010, but no one expected him to take out a FFVII character (and easily!).

One of the main reasons I wouldn't be as distraught about Ryu > Seph happening is that I don't know if my heart can handle watching Mario put a 60-40 on Sephiroth. >.<

This is actually one I should've brought up. And it gets better and more majestic the further we get away from it.

Link has one clean loss in his entire contest history. ONLY ONE. And Cloud gave it to him. Let's fucking mosey, dudes.

I think Starcraft's run was pretty amazing. Almost lost to Halo and then eventually plowed through Kingdom Hearts and Zelda before finally being stopped by Smash Bros.

L-block in my mind was still the most surprising. All joke rallies since then like Draven were like "yeah, we know this can happen cause L-block already happened, whatever."

For a non-joke run, Starcraft in the games contest coming from a 16 seed and nearly winning the division is up there too. Beating a Zelda game, Metroid game, and Halo at a relatively high point for its popularity.

The topic went in the direction I wanted it to, featuring many posts by me talking about other fantastic contest performances.

Yes I wanted to vent a little bit about Allen's part in Link/Draven but my main point was how fucking BONKERS it was that despite all that happened, Link nearly pulled it off. He's a freak.
