Happy is A+ so seeing him again in a series is great. I mean it might not technically be the same one. Gotta wait and see if he does any great trolling first. The new series definitely has basically all the same elements and vibe youd expect from Mashima so if youre into that you will like it and if not its a pass

I'm doing okay. I think I finally burned out on binging shows so I'll probably just keep up on airing stuff for awhile. Maybe something in the new season will re-light the spark!

i drop stuff pretty pretty easily though.

found some old stuff and this was my top 10 at the end of 2012 which is when i started dipping my toes into the anime waters. i didn't count Pokemon, Digimon, Dragon Ball and YuGiOh but considering i have School Days as the last item at number 11, this is also pretty much all the anime i had seen at that point lol.

looking through the lists over the years, every show that I've ever considered to be in my top 10 is mentioned in those 3 lists. not a lot has managed to break my top 10. probably a combination of the initial high being more valued and a declining interest in anime. wonder how some of these would do after rewatches. got a handful of shows to check out that could hopefully break top ten.

Bit over halfway through Katana Maidens now @Robazoid so I figured I'd talk a bit about it.

I feel like most of the things about this series are kinda bad, or derivative. None of the characters or story elements are particularly original. The story itself is okay, but nothing I haven't seen before. The animation is a bit reliant on CG which hurts it sometimes, but actually uses it decently well, so it's not as bad as it could've been at least. The characters are almost good. They're fairly archetypal in general, but usually have a couple neat traits that make them more interesting. Kanami feels like a typical positive protagonist a lot of the time, but her decision to side with Hiyori in the first episode and her awareness in fights are really cool. I do wish they'd take that a little further - the first episode showed her determination to side with Hiyori, even if she was in the wrong, so it was disappointing to see her just fighting with the good guys the whole time. Sayaka's VA is awesome and she's probably my favorite of the protagonists and I'd like to see more of her. Mai occasionally seems to have potential, but she's just boring so far. Ellen probably the worst of the main crew, other than when she occasionally gets serious. Kaoru's pretty cool sometimes - I like that she has this kinda lazy apathetic feel to her, but she's actually a super hard worker who's passionate about what she does. She makes the most boob jokes though which is super lame (Nene has a really good design but the boob jokes with her are terrible).

The villains were probably a little better than the good guys in general, though their motivations (other than the main villain) felt a little bit weak. Yukina's the worst of the bunch. I really wish she'd been disposed of in the first arc, because every scene with her is annoying. I have no idea why everyone else tolerates her existence, since she's both incompetent and irritating. Yume was my favorite of them. She had an interesting story, solid motivations, and good VA. I hope she stays dead and doesn't come back, since her death scene was great.

The worst thing about the show is the character designs. I hate them. No one stands out at all. Some of the villains are okay, but eh. Their hair and faces look dumb, the school uniforms are shit, and they wear the same clothes in every scene in the series. Even when they're on the run and the authorities are chasing them down, they never bother changing out of their outfits. It's totally stupid and lazy, especially since the uniform designs are so bad (Kaoru's is okay, but that's about it). If the character designs were actually good I think most of my complaints about the show would disappear.

What actually does save the series is the feel of it. Everything feels pretty fun and good and there's a really nice flow to everything. I still wish that the basics were better, but it's definitely not a chore to watch.

Oh, cool! I'm glad you aren't hating Katana Maidens at least. Most of what I love about it are things that personally appeal to me (like, I'm glad you appreciate Kanami's awareness in battle too because that's my favorite thing about her). Because of that, I can see other people with different preferences getting more caught up on its shortcomings than I did. I thought the character designs were fine and I liked it enough to give it a pass on the occasional cost-cutting measures, for example. Even I can't defend Yukina, though. She's the worst.

I'm glad you gave it a try, at least! I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the rest of it too. I'll probably post my thoughts for spring anime this weekend but I didn't like the second half of Katana Maidens as much as the first. It still had a lot of neat ideas but I felt like they could have been handled better.

Also, you said you'd seen a lot of elements from Katana Maidens before. If you ever think of any specific examples, I'd be interested in checking out anime that might be similar to it!

Vividred Operation has some similar elements, though the main duo are closer to rivals in that. The first four or so episodes of that show were really awesome. Nanoha has a protagonist who's pretty similar in a lot of ways, and is a really great show (at least for the first two seasons and the movies).

Thanks, I might try Vividred soon-ish, whenever I get back to binging anime. I will watch Nanoha someday too but I should probably finish Symphogear first, and having 39 episodes of Symphogear in my backlog is part of the reason why I feel a bit burned out on anime right now >_>
