swordz9s HOT Summer 2018 Anime Write-ups

Aguu: Tensai Ningyou - I didnt expect a battle-like description from a show like this. The display art is pretty damn bad though. Can DEEN deliver? Probably not

Angolmois: Genkou Kassenki - Samurai vs Mongol invasion by a studio Ive never heard of. Could potentially be good, but I feel like its more likely to be a show nobody really likes or dislikes

Asobi Asobase - looks like a cute girls comedy so Im sure it will be solid and Lerche has been getting better and better these days

Back Street Girls - 3 Yakuza get sex changes and become idols...well at least its a different kind of idol show

Banana Fish - I thought this looked like yaoi before I even read it. The whole sex slave adoptive son thing is yikes. 0 chance I end up watching this

Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro - sounds pretty funny, but it also sounds like it could get stale. Ill be keeping an ear/eye out for this one.

Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa - Kaiji spin-off. One day I may check out the series. This spinoff sounds and looks interesting so maybe I could watch it without needing to know anything about Kaiji?

FLCL Alternative - ...wasnt this in the last season chart? I guess they put it here again since its not done.

Free S3? - I think its 3. Man who wouldve guessed this would be on of KyoAnis longest running series as far as seasons go. Still not interested in watching it!

Future Card Shin Buddyfight - theres always one of these kinds of shows. This shit just be pretty big with kids

Gintama the billionth - cant wait to see another Gintama in MALs top 10. It will be all 10 spots if it keeps getting anime. One day I will check it out because its supposed to be great.

Grand Blue - Ecchi comedy that for whatever reason has the guys up front on the image instead of the waifus...kinda unusual. Is this show supposed to be good? I feel like somebody here was excited about it.

Hanebado - a few years ago I wouldve immediately written this off because lmao badminton, but Haikyuu proved even boring sports can be great anime so Im willing to give this a chance.

Happy Sugar Life - wow this sounds fucked up for a show with such a cute picture. Whether I watch it or not depends on how messed up it ends up being. I dont really want another Devilman Crybaby experience

Harukana Receive - Guaranteed the boobs will be bouncing more than the beach volleyball.

Hataraku Saibou - Jojo studio about personified cells in the human body? Ill definitely check this out.

High Score Girl - wow those faces and eyes....I havent seen something that hard to look at since the last swordz9 post.

Hyakuren no Haou to Seiyaku no Valkyria - obligatory isekai show

Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu - literally another isekai show, but this time the MC enslaves women

Island - from the studio who brought us GOAT anime Yosuga no Sora comes an anime based on a VN that wont have any HOT wincest. Literally a waste of your time to check this out. Like no way this could ever be good. Kidding aside maybe it will be fine, but who knows.

Jashin-chan Dropkick - violent comedy huh. The designs stand out some so Im expecting if nothing else it will at least create a fair amount of porn

Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes - Holmes works at an antique shop and solves mysteries. That is an incredibly boring premise

Lord of Vermillion: Guren no Ou - wasnt there another Lord of Vermillion series?

Marvel Future Avengers S2 - how the fuck does Marvel anime keep getting made? Like yeah the live action MCU is great, but all the anime werent

Muhyo to Rouji no Mahoritsu Soudan Jimusho - wasnt this a canceled Jump series a while back?

Summer looks pretty bad overall to me. On the plus side theres MHA, Titan and then Jojo in Fall so its a solid lineup for shounen fighting stuff

Episode one of Island was alright. There were several pointless lewd moments that will probably bother certain people, but my only real complaint is that the whole thing felt kind of off. Like, the pacing and line-reading at times was just really off-putting for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on.

Still, I'm a sucker for time travel and weirdo mysteries and this seems to have both (or does it?!?) and some of the girls were cute. I predict this will be an anime that only I will watch and that I'll think it was fine.

Also, one of the girls is voiced by Nyarko-san!

Watched three episodes of wotakoi. Good so far but the main two definitely feel more like friends despite being a couple already, not really any sense of romance or even attraction between them... I enjoy the group dynamics among the four characters in general though. I remember people posting that this show was really inconsistent but I haven't felt that way at all so far, every episode has been just about the same quality to me.

Yeah, I caught the ME3 comparison too. Katana Maidens spoilers (up to roughly where you are if I remember right) There is a negative side to the noro injections but they just didn't do a great job of showing it. I might say more once you finish, mostly because I'm not sure what episode you're on and I don't want to risk spoiling anything.

I'm done up to episode 19 now. How long before the reveal the side effect? All they've said so far is that it grants eternal youth and helps cure illnesses/wounds.

Also how long before we find out what the motivations of the bad humans are? It's very odd that they'd be on the side of someone whose motive is to destroy all humans. Apparently the American and Japanese government are on that side too, which doesn't make any sense. And is it ever explained why they just left the Ayanokouji school president in charge after discovering she was working with the bad guys?

Katana Maidens spoilers They handle it really poorly but the vibe I got from Ayumu being injected with noro is that she and the others essentially lost their will to resist the evil goddess. At one point I think Yukina actually says they'd have no choice but to do what the evil god wanted so it was dumb that the one president was being choosy about subjects. The problem is, Ayumu really didn't change at all after the injection. It's one of my big complaints about the second cour, honestly. She's the exact same person as before, just happy that she's powerful enough to fight Kanami now. I think it would've carried a lot more weight if they played up the horror of what happened to her but oh well.

As for the motives of the bad humans, if you check the anime board for Katana Maidens topics you can see me whining every week about how dumb they were. It wasn't a problem in the first cour, possessed Yukari could realistically trick them, but in the second cour they're literally siding with a goddess whose stated goal is destroying humanity. I guess I'll just say that they never really address this problem and it's one of the big black marks I have against the second cour.

On the plus side, episode 20 and on, while still not perfect, had a lot more hype moments I felt.

Also, I got the impression that there was a difference between the noro injections and being fused with aradama? Like, the whole elite guard in the first half was fused with aradama, but only Yomi used noro injections, and the effects seemed to be very different. Ichikishima seems to be more about the aradama fusing than noro injections.

I agree they should've focused more on the gods. I was super intrigued when that concept was introduced because there were a lot of neat ways the three could move and play off of each other. There's a bit of that coming up but the one goddess really didn't matter much.

As for noro vs aradama fusion, there might be a difference between them but I don't really remember (one of the perils of watching a show as it airs, details get forgotten). I feel like there must be some downside because there were multiple times where they apologized for not yet knowing how to remove the aradama from the former elite guard members but I can only speculate on what that downside might be.

Hanebado's animation quality was real high the first episode. Hope it keeps that up. Maybe a bit too much drama for the first episode (though sports and drama go hand in hand) but definitely want to watch more.

Watched the first 3 episodes of the DanganRonpa 1 anime. By VN adaptation standards, there's really nothing offensive about it. It's fine. That gungnir impalement death felt super quick and had a bit less impact though.

The DR1 game voice cast isn't much to write home about <_<

The anime itself is certainly inferior to the game, though. Also worthless if you've played the game. So...pretty much only watch if you CANT play the game.

The DR3 dub....I can't remember the VA situation, but that dub is incredible for different reasons. Maybe one of my favs. Imagine Ghost Stories except it did actually stay on script.

It had a good OP and ED. Definitely a staple of all the Danganronpa anime. DR3's were top tier all around, some of the best that year.

I don't think the DR1 anime is THAT bad, but I also don't think most of DR1 is that amazing to begin with other than the end.

32. Slavery the Animation
-This is just one of those shows where you look at the synopsis and you know it's going to be total trash.

31. Dances with the Dragons
-I honestly remember nothing about this except that I know I saw some of it. Not knowing anything is enough to get it not last.

30. Magical Girl Site
-There have been a ton of Madoka Magica wannabes and none of them are as good. Strike that, none of them are good. From like Yuki Yuuna, to Magical Raising Project, Wixoss, etc they all fall short in various ways. I guess a big difference here is that this one only lasted like two episodes where I finished watching a season of those other ones. This one just tried way too hard to seem really edgy and its stuff like this which proves that creators don't really understand how much MMs direction and pacing really let it be an all time great.

29. Nil Admirari no Tenbin
-Like, I'm sure this is probably watchable in some sense. Just not anything to be excited about.

28. Devils Line
-This was almost not bad but I really would have been 100% on board if it turned out the girl was like half vampire. Also why they call vampires devils beyond me because like vampire is an actual thing (in fiction at least) that like people know about and devils are a completely different thing. I'm just not in the target for this show.

27. Caligula
-If you want a show that probably is the like most arrogant stuck up show this might be it? I don't know but this almost seems like the type that some snob would be "Oh, you don't get it? Fufufufu" or something.

26. Tada-Kun Never Falls in Love
-So I could call this like chance encounter the anime. I was never really on board with this past the first episode. I'm actually surprised so many if you guys stuck with it after it clearly went way down hill and basically stayed there.

25. Legend of Galactic Heroes: New Thesis
-This is probably not a bad show, just one I didn't find very interesting. I get that a part of the draw is like the dynamic of the personalities and strategy involved, but the actual combat is like a bunch of red lines going across the screen. I'm not sure if this is how it always is but honestly this really feels dated (because like in concept it is I guess) from the getgo.

24. WotaKoi
-This swung pretty hard and if it connected it could have been a homerun. But a lot of things like weird character development choices, bad timing, an awful budget, etc really brings it down. It's actually hard for me to bring up redeeming factors because a lot of these kind of feels like they looked up what makes romatic comedies funny and what was popular a few years ago and just put in that stuff.

23. Piano in the Forest
-I'd say this is the first show that was probably good enough to finish but I just didn't want to. There is nothing really wrong with it except that it leads into a painfully predictable path.

22. Magical Girl Ore
-When this was early in the run I wondered if it could do enough things differently to maintain the kind of fresh feeling it had. It could not.

21. Cutie Honey Universe
-Probably too tame overall. I would have been more on board if this was packed with nudity and more violence etc.

20. Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori
-This is not a bad show, but one that had a very low ceiling overall in the first place and I didn't see continuing to be beneficial.

19. 3D Kanojo: Real Girl
-So I really like this show. But then the pedophile accusation episode happened and it just seems so contrived like the creator could not be bothered to put a real obstacle that would build the cast as characters. This was a show that was like in my top 3 and the episode was so bad it got instantly dropped.

The only two shows I really have to talk about are FMP and CCS. FMP is a great looking show but it also one where like they can't possibly wrap things up in the time they have left. On top of that I feel like this is a pretty decent step down from Second Raid.

CCS might be the best looking show of the season. It has some of the best use of music (along with Megalo Box) too. Each episode is brimming with imagination and is one of the most enjoyable watches of the season imo.
