I'll be interested to see your reactions to the remaining dungeons. They have great atmosphere, but the 3rd adult dungeon is very divisive.

All of this in-game talk about the passage of time and remembering childhood is making me oddly emotional. Just realized that this is probably the last game I will play before I turn 30 in a few weeks...

Yeah I get that. I've actually been struggling with this concept as I am playing... I'm sure the "true" experience of OoT and games like this is the problem-solving, exploration, and immersion. If it was 1998, I would sink 4 hours a night into it, every night, for a month until I discovered everything on my own.

The problem is that I don't have the time to do that anymore, so anytime I am stuck for too long, I use good ol' A l e x's guide. And if it's a choice between a slightly watered down experience and taking an entire year to beat because life gets in the way, I think I'm okay with the former. That's why the child/adult themes are super resonant for me at the moment!

My understanding of BotW is that it's pretty sandbox-y. I'm generally not a completionist so I feel like I wouldn't bother with a guide on that one maybe.

Yeah its very guided towards what you HAVE to do to finish the story, but the rest of the time its just a sandbox where you want to do quests and exploration to power up to be able to actually tackle the story tasks.

You start in your treehouse if you save and quit as a kid.

You start in the Temple of Time or treehouse if you save and quit as an adult (you gotta save and quit in the treehouse to start in it as an adult).

If you save and quit in a dungeon, you start at the dungeon entrance.

I loved Ocarina of Time. I had never played a 3D Zelda besides Wind Waker, which I loved, and was pumped to play Majora's Mask 3D and Ocarina of Time 3D when I got a 3DS. Played Majora's first because I found a good deal on it and it was... fine. Good game, pretty tedious at parts, mediocre dungeons but an interesting world, didn't really get all the hype. Played Ocarina a couple months later when it went select and was super impressed. It really lived up to the hype.

Majora's is all about atmosphere IMO
In terms of gameplay it's inferior to OOT in almost every way

Really? I had the exact opposite experience. OoT has zero depth to the combat. I've done the 3 hearts challenge in OoT, it's easy cause you Z-target one enemy and the others ignore you, so you learn how to avoid taking damage from the five common enemies and you just win. Majora's Mask actually made me think a little bit more in combat situations, cause you have multiple mask forms which are useful in combat, but they're all tradeoffs and you actually have to make decisions and use your brain occasionally.

I always assumed people liked OoT for the atmosphere. (Which...OoT's atmosphere did appeal to me more than MMs).

Beat Forest Temple yet?

Also one thing that really surprised me on my first playthrough was, minor spoiler, that as an adult, the order you tackle the dungeons isn't static. I remember beating the Forest Temple and getting access to the Fire Temple and realizing I may have been able to do the Fire Temple first. I also did the child part of the Spirit Temple without really realizing I had 'started' the dungeon, then doing the Shadow Temple, then completing the Spirit Temple. I just thought that was what you were supposed to do until I found out otherwise later.

I thought that was really cool and kind of harkened back to the original and LttP, but I never see anyone praise the game for that.

Looking at the series as a whole, Ocarina is basically the last Zelda to let you tackle dungeons out of order, until recently.

That's somewhat significant, though it is still more guided than previous entries, except maybe LA.

Harkening back was the wrong term, but I used that term just because I played the game so late personally and never see anyone praise the game for letting you tackle dungeons in different orders. And it definitely doesn't seem like an unintentional sequence break.
