On the subject of games, I'm just a little bit disappointed by the Kingdom Hearts collections. I assumed the games would be remastered and streamlined for a better experience, but they're almost straight ports. It's exactly the same gameplay I remember, with the same tricks and glitches.

I could swear the music is just a little bit different from what I remember, especially in Destiny Islands. And I thought I heard somewhere that they changed the way magic worked in KH1 (to avoid spamming Cure), but I guess not. In any case, I'm loving the game all the same.

Okay, I need to start keeping up with English manga releases. I'm browsing the bookstore right now, and what happens to catch my eye..

THE PROMISED NEVERLAND.

I can't bring myself to walk out of the store without it.

WHAT? There is English release?

Ooh I checked Amazon and they release theirs on December 5th. I'm gonna buy it at my local bookstore if they get it though. They stock a pretty decent amount of manga.

I did not notice any fundamental changes to the Kingdom Hearts remasters, to be honest. (As opposed to, say, the remastered Crash Bandicoot trilogy, which handles very differently, though not at first glance.)

Indiegala has another anime-themed bundle up. Almost feels like they are in the habit of doing that every month or so. *headscratch* Only one repeat for me in this batch, and that is Ecchi Sketch, so it is not too bad a deal.

Also noticed that there is yet another Aksys Games release for Vita, and that is another otome VN, this one called Bad Apple Wars. The Vita never dies completely. (See also: Drive Girls and God Wars, plus Demon Gaze II.)

Been playing some TWEWY lately. I'm assuming I'm on a ng+ since I have my old items/powerups/pins and was at the beginning of the story. Figure I'll go through and try to get as many new items/pins as possible this run, though I don't have ultimate difficulty or the ability to chain more than 4 battles yet.

TWEWY doesn't have NG+

Rather, it has the option of revisiting any "day" in the game once you've beaten the last boss.

You can then fulfill secret missions to unlock secret reports written by someone that fleshes out the backstory and adds some more lore.

There's also a secret "alternate timeline" chapter focused around a version of Shibuya where Tin Pin Slammer reigns supreme. This is also where you can unlock the Ultimate difficulty, and also some exclusive and rare pins.

...

I freaking LOVE The World End With You if that wasn't obvious enough.

Someone pointed out that the demon in charge of the place has a small demon on his shoulder which was somewhat reminiscent of Ugo from the storybook "The Adventure Log of Ugo" and that he also wears a hat like Minerva.

Sooo... if that is some heavy foreshadowing, I DO NOT like where that line of thought would be headed.

Been watching hajime no ippo finally. I've almost watched it like 5 times in the past. It's quite good so far (only 10 eps in). It's really weird how ippo isn't always the huge underdog like in most sports stories. Sometimes he is, sometimes he's expected to win, and sometimes it looks even. I like that so far.

I also like how so far they are setting up storylines for the boxers where you almost feel like theres no way any of them can afford to lose but of course, somebody has to. It makes it a lot more tense.

Have Neku spam dashes for iframes when you're focusing on the top screen, and either mash or try to memorize what to press ahead of time when you're focusing on the bottom screen. It eventually gets a lot easier with practice, especially if you used the third partner everywhere like I did. You can only focus on one screen at a time, but you can mentally "queue" up simpler tasks to perform while you're focused elsewhere.

Trust me on this. You don't.

The game's built around the touchscreen to do everything, and the combat requires you to do precise flicks and slashes to fight. (Some attacks also require you to tap multiple times, draw circles and lines, etc.)

There's also a mission where you have to use the DS's microphone, so you're pretty much screwed if you're playing on an emulator.

Eh. Depends on how good you are at a mouse.

I couldn't draw circles very well with a mouse, and rapid slashes were a bit harder than just holding a stylus like pencil and flicking the screen.

Then again. I'm not a big PC gamer, so I don't have that much experience using a mouse for games. YMMV and all that.

The microphone problem was the real kicker though. I had to use cheat codes to get past that part.

Hey, do whatever you need to play this awesome game. :) I just want more people to know about it.

I also forgot to mention that playing on the DS has the added benefit of using the Mingle system to level up pins.

Basically, whenever you use the wireless function and put the system in sleep mode, you have a chance to get connected to a random "alien" and get EXP for your pins. Some pins can only evolve via mingle points so if you're aiming for those, you have to use the DS.

Finished the original hajime no ippo series. It was pretty great but it was a shame to see a lot of lazy animation and stalling. So much time every single episode wasted repeating things. That 75 episode series really should have been about 50. The jarring part is that a lot of episodes have lightning fast pacing, almost too fast. They'll be talking about an upcoming match months from now and then just cut to the start of the match.

It was also massively frustrating to watch ippo basically cease to function at the beginning of virtually every match. Once or twice to show the pressure or that he is feeling off is one thing but nearly every match has him just completely forget everything and take a massive beating for a whole round and sometimes more before actually starting to fight. It makes him come across as really stupid.

Those flaws aside, the show was fantastic. Although just like with the other great sports anime I've seen recently (haikyuu) it just makes me want to play that sport rather than improve myself in general. They really do make boxing look fun. I really like how authentically they animated a lot of it. A lot of boxing is not graceful and people passing out rarely looks badass. Normally they just crumple to the ground awkwardly. They weren't afraid to make the ugly moments look ugly and it lent a significant air of realism to the whole thing.

It also kept the awesome visual and audio exaggerations grounded. We know the dempsey roll isn't really making the jet engine noises because so much of what happens is so realistic, it's easy to instantly tell that is just an effect to demonstrate how fast and intense it is. They use those effects really well. Quite a few matches felt spectacular.

Just like with haikyuu I'm also impressed how in depth they went on the strategy of the sport. I feel like I have a very solid grasp of what boxing is like for the boxers (even if it might not be true, it makes you feel that way). Another thing I really like that separated these fights from so many others is the persistence of damage. A heavy blow in the first round could be the deciding factor in the 6th. In so many shonen fights it feels like the only attack that matters at all is the very last one and all the others were basically flashy time wasters but in this every strong blow that landed had real impact on the match and it made all of it so much more exciting. I have no idea why other shonen anime are so afraid to have fights play out like this.

I still have the 3 specials and then the last 2 seasons to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing even more.

Season 2 of Ippo doesn't quite live up to S1 imo but is still good at least. S3- the latter half in particular is really, really good and left me wanting more as soon as I finished it

Did you know that there was a spin-off manga about their future married life?

I think the story was that it was made by a fan, and was officially put into the magazine by winning a contest or something.

Regardless, it was officially authorized by the original mangaka so it's basically canon now.

Heck yeah! Anything fluffy, funny, wholesome, and unique is always within my wheelhouse.

It gives a nice balance and contrast to all the isekai I've been reading (which are usually action, ecchi, harem oriented) and to all the gore fests, tragedies, and serious drama that I also read from time to time.

And it also serves as a nice sweet filler between the shounen actions and rom/coms that come out weekly.

Basically, I'll read and enjoy anything.

It's starting to really piss me off in hajime no ippo how he seems glued to the dempsey roll. Theres so many matches that he is winning without it and then uses it anyway putting himself at risk of being countered for no reason at all. Then whenever someone has an anti dempsey strategy he is all "but thats all I have!". What the fuck. Learn some new moves then like you used to. He is a strong boxer with experience and natural talent but he desperately clings to that one move like a crutch and ironically does better when he is unconscious and sticking to the basics.

Just got through the ryuuhei fight and man was that entirely unsatisfying. The change in music also feels awful. I love sweeping orchestral music as much as the next guy but hajime no ippo's rock tracks had already become a significant part of the atmosphere of the show. It's rough and fast and powerful just like boxing. The orchestral music just feels out of place and the screemo metal stuff is just awful.

Basically everything good I've said about the first series has evaporated. Damage no longer means anything at all, each shot but the last one is meaningless. Originally ippo's punches were serious threats that you couldn't even block without taking significant damage no matter how good you were. Now lanky outboxers are taking barrages of those to the head sometimes as counter punches and not even falling down. There is no realism in the fights anymore and the new characters introduced are nonsensical and don't feel like believable people.

The importance of fighting spirit has gone from something that lets you throw one last punch or get up one more time to something that lets you fight indefinitely at beyond full strength and take an infinite amount of damage.

Even when damage is landed it's recovered from at random speeds. Can't use your legs anymore cause you took too many body blows? Fighting spirit! Now you can. Punches slowing down from exhaustion? Fighting spirit. Now they are faster than ever. The actual fights feel meaningless. The storylines are larger than life bullshit with unrealistic villains that are basically murders and cheaters who everyone forgives instantly as soon as the fight is over. Ugh I hate what this show has become.

Also I guess I'll spoiler tag this part but the way he has tried to evolve the dempsey roll doesn't make any sense. All he needed to do was change the rhythm mid combo which could easily be done by changing the shape of the rotations so that your momentum is maintained and you put virtually no stress on your body and still change the tempo entirely. Instead he comes to a complete stop and then magically punches harder after he starts up again? That's not how physics works. The resulting punch should be weak as hell. He could even just duck down lower during the punch to change the angle or lead with his inside guard to stop counters. I almost don't want to believe the later seasons were written by the same person.

Sounds kind of like Kenichi. It started out completely grounded in reality and real martial arts, even if the Masters were absurdly powerful. OH MY GOD

So the long-awaited 143 page chapter of One Punch Man just came out.

It.

Was.

Amazing.

I can definitely see why it needed to be that long. The action flowed so smoothly, and the fights were so well detailed that cutting it in the middle would just break the flow and ruin the entire reading experience. It almost felt like I was just watching stills from the anime, that's how amazing the movements flowed so smoothly from one panel to the next.

If this ever does get animated, I have no doubt it would need an hour long special episode to fully capture all the details that were drawn in it.

But what's even more amazing is that Murata managed to finish all of that, all the action and the double page spreads, in just 30 DAYS. That's almost 5 PAGES A DAY. That's INSANE.

Most mangaka already struggle with finishing 1 page a day (with the story boarding, line work, inking, screentones, cleaning, etc.) but Murata manages to quintuple their work and crank them out almost literally nonstop, with ZERO drop in quality. (Special mention must also be given to his assistants who were also equally important in the process).

You guys really need to read it and see for yourself the work of this god-mangaka.

Murata is pretty beastly. I bet he already did the story boarding before that 30 day period but even still. I just hope he doesn't overwork himself so much he has to go on hiatus. It's certainly not an uncommon outcome.

Murata is indeed god-tier. I only hope he does not burn himself out by being so ambitious.

OH MY GOD

So the long-awaited 143 page chapter of One Punch Man just came out.

It.

Was.

Amazing.

I may be joining you in reading it if season two's animation quality is crap.
