I don't think it's nearly as bad as Regaro says, I like it but obv its not on the level of 1+2

It's probably not 100% necessary since it's an interquel that takes place in an odd spot yet you still have to play it after both games and ultimately doesnt affect anything too major plot wise

But if you plan on watching DanganRonpa 3 it would be nice to know a few major references/appearances and why few episodes are the way they are.

Well, time for me to eat my words!

It didn't sit right with me that I ignored a show that I was recommended because of an awful OP, so I decided to go ahead and check out UQ Holder.

Good call. This passed the 3 episode rule with flying colors.

This show is good stuff. For one thing the pacing is something else. 3 episodes in and I feel like I've watched 5 episodes of an anime in this genre already, at no sacrifice to the presentation or enjoyment. The fanservice has been a non-issue. It opened with a short Negima "flashback" scene that was basically a big fanservice shot, but it's purpose seemed to be mostly "that's how it used to be, things aren't like that now". Couple of towel shots with the older woman, not presented as oggle bait, except one time as a joke. So far just about all the ecchi has been at the expense of a super feminine male character. Both of these potential issues being avoided is somehow even more impressive but the fact that there was like an 8 to 10 minute hot springs scene in episode 2 and it still didn't fuck up on either end.

The characters are all pretty clean archetypes but executed well. The story has on occassion threatened a potentially lame direction but then squashed it right away, which seemed to reflect the writer being a big name staple of late 90s/early 00s anime and manga sticking to what he knows best but also evolving to stay modern and bringing those ideas into a more medium and genre aware state.

Knowing nothing about Negima has not been an issue. They make things pretty clear with very little exposition. Hell, there was one moment in episode 2 where they implied something about a character by showing 2 Negima characters pop up in someone's head, characters I know NOTHING about, and I still managed to grasp what it was going for. There's clearly plenty of references and world stuff for Negima fans, but it doesn't get in the way at all.

Is it an amazing show? Naw, especially this season with such absurd competition. Fall 2017 for anime is basically what the year 2017 is for video games. But it's still real good, and people should check it out. Nobody coming to its defense when I was shit talking earlier implies to me that it's getting understandably ignored. I hope I can get at least one person to try.

As for the OP, seems it is what it is because it's a direct reference to the original Negima OP. Shame! Only other issue is some REALLY HILARIOUSLY BAD CG in episode 3, but it doesn't look like that's gonna be a normal thing. Definitely something I look forward to seeing a BRD vs Broadcast comparison for.

Hmmm. Not sure how I feel about Yuru Yuri season 3. Not a fan of the studio change thus far. Like it's more or less the same show, but the character personalities feel just "off" enough so as to be noticeable, and it's really disconcerting.

I admit I am only partway through episode 2, so we'll see how it turns out I guess.

IMO it's like kinda the same but the focus is very different. The first two seasons were mainly like cute gag type comedy with more emphasis on the funny stuff. Season 3 is much more focused on setting up dawww type moments. I big difference though is that I think the art style in the original is a lot better. Doga Kobo is like one of the best when it comes to drawing this type of show.

Also Like my watch list for this season is pretty low (when I say low I mean less than 20 shows and might get even lower). But like Animegataris... I read the description. What? Anyway like I thought so since the first episode but as someone who has been in anime clubs and has had a lot of exposure to a lot of fans... the show really pins down how people actually tend to react a lot of times. Especially when they start to argue about stuff.

Hype as fuck

I watched 3 movies this weekend!

Akira was pretty good! I liked it better than the manga, despite cutting a lot of content. There's some bias there though, because when I read Akira, I was still doing the one volume a day thing, and Akira's volumes were all like, 500 pages. So that put some unnecessary stress on me and made the whole thing feel less enjoyable, despite being a solid story. The movie was pretty action-packed all throughout. It's aged pretty poorly in terms of animation and writing, but it's easy to see why it's a classic I guess. I accidentally downloaded a dub and it wasn't very good. But this wasn't gonna be changed by vocal performances, I don't think

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was fantastic. It was funny, heartwarming, and a little sad. I like these melodramatic high school romances, so it hit all the right chords with me. I did think the big twist was a little dumb, but it doesn't really affect the highs.

Anyway, what I really want to talk about, however, is Wolf Children, which I just finished watching. Since I watched it back in high school, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya had been my favorite anime movie. But today, I have to give that honor to a new one. This was one of the most beautiful pieces of animation I've ever witnessed, and a true testament to the quality the medium is capable of. In the two hours I spent with it, it managed to convey a story racked with emotion and charm. It's definitely a "feel-good" story, since everything bad that happens ends up having a positive outcome, or at least an outcome with a positive outlook. I'm having trouble trying to put words into feelings right now, but I was just completely blown away. I'm gonna have a bias towards anything that can make me cry, and boys, this was not a pretty sight. God, what a masterpiece.

God damn, my two favorite mediums have just left me in a state of befuddlement with recent discoveries. I take a weird pride in my lame critiques, but Wolf Children put me at a loss for words for literally two other films, and I haven't even attempted to talk about Hollow Knight. Great couple weeks for my entertainment. Bad couple weeks for my wanting to sound smart on a video game message board.

Wish I could say I could give a "real" answer. I think I skimmed a lot of the manga without realizing it. Glad I stopped scheduling when I read manga, but the negative here is that I have barely read anything since I stopped.
