Make sure you pick a game you've seen a speed run for before.

How long would it take someone to tell you're not the #1 speed runner of this game in the world? Like if you and #1 were in a race and your screens were being compared side by side.

For me: as casually good as I think I once was in Super Mario 64, it would take like eight seconds since I never worked on the Lakitu skip.

I can't mash nearly as well as the Contra speedrunners so Area 2 would instantly expose me. I can do the first boss quick kill though so I'd be good up to that point.

FTL does have a speedrun community, believe it or not

It basically boils down to picking the ship that starts with the super long charge time weapon that one-shots most ships, resetting until you get a Weapon Pre-Igniter (Which, as the name implies, lets you skip the first charge on your weapons) in your first or second jump and then one-shotting everything

So maybe deceptively long!

If we're playing no resets allowed, still probably deceptively long because of how RNG-heavy the game is, unless the observer were particularly skilled.

Braid's the only time I seriously tried to speed run, and even then I was roughly five minutes behind the record at a time when it could be beaten in twenty-nine minutes. I probably should have led with that instead of SM64 since Braid takes longer to see who rocks the most at running it.

He got a mention in one of the Summoning Salt videos where it goes over the history of a particular games speedrun records.

I think it was in the Super Metroid one but im not 100% certain. Maybe it was SMW?

Unless he is still actively running a game (and to the best of my knowledge he is not) then none of the records from back then have held up.

Its still pretty cool that he had earned a place in the books for his work at the time to improve records.

Good thing that I picked a game that I have speedrun already (We Love Katamari).

I'm #2 and I know who the #1 person is, so it would just take a little question asking to confirm that he's who he claimed to be. If we were racing without knowing each other, I'd probably keep it respectable looking, but I'd bleed time on every level and fall further behind each time.

Well I thought of Devil May Cry 3

My style of play in that game isn't really speed runny as that would be far too efficient in a game about styling on dudes so probably almost immediately. I guess if I was trying to go fast, the first part of the game is straightforward enough that I could maybe get through the first level at something close enough that you could maybe think these feeds are both the speed runner and my screen was just him having a bad day, but I'm fairly out of practice so I kinda doubt even that.

In any case no chance in hell past that as the wraith boss in the second level would no doubt thoroughly expose me if I somehow got even that far.

I don't even know the current routes any more. But circa Wrong Warp discovery (both right before and right after) I could, on a good day, maybe keep up on OoT for about five minutes.

Which is to say I could keep up through the rupee route at Kokiri and Kokiri escape and then probably fail the HESS/Castle Before Dark. >_>

With WW the breakpoint probably happens on B1 Skip in Deku Tree.

Or maybe I'm overestimating myself and it becomes obvious earlier. >_>

Well, I picked a game a first with no speed runs. Then on instructions of "must be speed runnable" I switched to super metroid.

I actually did hold the #1 speed run record for that game years ago. Modern speed runners completely blow me out of the water, though. If I even remember how to do early platforms right (haven't played in over a decade) I would absolutely expose myself at the first mach ball passage. I was never good at that, I just reset until I got it.

Actually, I'd probably expose myself earlier, cause I think speed runners these days get hit deliberately to get knocked a certain direction, cause it's faster than running, and I never practiced that.
