we were in our team huddle and the claim manager (my section manager's manager) was in the huddle with us. and she asked how we were handling the work load and asking about overtime.

then she pin pointed me directly. so i said i am handling my workload fine and i avoid overtime at all costs because of the work-life balance i like to achieve. i said that i prioritize my new claims and making first contact on the claims i was unable to obtain first contact on yesterday and then i just work through my queue as those tasks all are a 7 day service level objective and that i don't feel stressed or overwhelmed at all, though i know some people in the department do and are working over time.

so she starts GRILLING me. "so you don't feel the need to work any overtime?" no. "so you don't even come in 30 minutes early?" no. "so if your teammates needed help you wouldn't come in 30 minutes early?" i can help them just fine with my workload during normal work hours but if it was absolutely required or necessary to come in early to help my team i would. it's just not something i'd necessarily take upon myself to do.

and i felt like she was upset that i WASN'T drowning in the workload that we have like some people and didn't have some sob story to give about how it's all too hard.

so she comes to my desk afterwards and just says "so what do you have to do after work that is so important you just can't work overtime?"

"important? nothing. i just like to spend time with my dog and my boyfriend. and i like to decompress when i get home after work."

"does it take you very long to decompress?"

"no. it takes like 30 minutes."

then she saw my sloth calendar and said how she saw one in costa rica. i said i would like to take a vacation to costa rica to go to the sloth sanctuary and she says "well you know if you worked overtime you may be able to get there faster ;)"

okay cool i don't need to work over time. if you want to pay me almost $50/hr over time to sit on my phone or online and not do shit i can do that. or i can do it at home if you'd let us take laptops home. but i don't need to because i can get my work done fine and i'm almost literally #1 in all the service level objectives you set for our department on my team with the fastest cycle time from received to closed for my claims. there's literally no reason for me to work over time.

they totally encourage it in our department but i don't need it so why am i gonna sit at my desk for an extra hour when i zero out my queue every day?

they aren't soliciting people to work overtime to help other people in our own hub so i'm not going to.

to me it's just like sorry i don't want to be a wage slave to your company. i already come in and do my work diligently and complete it in a timely manner without working over time. i don't feel like being here longer than 8 and a half hours a day and that's my fucking right man.

My company is the same way, they encourage us to work as much overtime as possible to get caught up in things. I'll stay an extra hour or two on some days, hell some of my coworkers come in on Saturdays to work on issues they couldn't get to. I find it odd because we are a company that trips over a dollar to save a penny, but encourages overtime daily.

I used to work a bit of overtime here and there when I worked from 7-4.

Then my boss asked me to work from 8-5 and now I purposely avoid working any amount of overtime unless absolutely necessary, which so far it hasn't been.

If you get OT, I would bend over backgrounds for your manager and accept.

Work life balance is something that will hopefully be promoted in the future and actually implemented, Companies always promote it yet almost always never live up to it once hired

But if you are getting paid more money to do it she seems like she is giving you an opportunity

i don't want to get promoted. i don't want to be in management. that's not a goal for me.

why should i bend over backwards to do overtime when i zero out my queue every day? i don't want to work any longer than i need to. that's not something i'm interested in doing.

Woah there! I don't know about you, but this is a serious breach of personal boundaries to me. If I choose to punch out when the day ends, that's my prerogative and what I choose to do after that is no one's business even if it's "nothing".

I was picturing a calendar where you log the things you put off doing that day, and write down what self indulgent things you did instead.

i thought so too. that quip was just like a kick in the pants.

maybe i WILL work over time when i want to save to go to costa rica because i have an appreciable goal in mind that'll be worth the worklife balance trade off for a little while. but i'm not gonna work over time just because.

that's my thought too. and to which i say i'm sorry and i try to be a team player for my team of 7 but i'm not gonna work late to try to manage the queues of everyone in this demand pool in this hub. i'm not going to punish myself for being efficient by working excessive overtime and killing my work life balance.

Depending on how big the company is, if overtime is encouraged it sounds to me like some piss poor management.

Create a workflow cycle that gets shit done in an equally efficient way if there's really that much work left. Workers' performance drops too if they feel like they're not getting enough time to unwind at home. But all some people see are the time clocks.

More time spent at work does not equal increased productivity.

Yeah some places expect you to not have a life outside of work. I had a shift once that was supposed to finish at a certain time but the delivery came late and we were asked to stay on longer. I simply told the manager that that's simply not possible and I got the third degree from him as to why. In the end I still finished when I originally was supposed to as that's when my shift ended. Not several hours later. I'm not against overtime but on the other side of the coin I do need to plan for it.

This is something that has always gotten me too, and I worked for a dozen years with a guaranteed 10-15 hours of overtime a week. I schedule my life around my hours at work and that's fine, but I don't owe you any god-damned explanations for what I'm doing on my time. It's none of your damned business why I can't stay later tonight. It's none of your damned business why I can't switch shifts with someone next week. You asked. I said no. That's where the conversation should end. I work my hours and I work the overtime I'm scheduled for. We're not going to play some damned gotcha game about it. We're not doing guilt trips. I gave you 65 hours this week and that's it.

honestly, if they didn't care about you staying late and you got overtime pay for it, i'd probably purposefully slack a little and stay late.
