if crossfiyah doesn't desire an adventure, perhaps i could take his place (assuming there isn't a backlog)

i have never played 4e but kanz seems to love it and it is apparently simpler (though looking at the character sheet had me scratching my head at a number of things)

already have a character idea, though am unsure what class would make it work best

key words: sloth and/or hippie stoner

guy would rarely want to actively fight, but wouldn't mind others fighting in his steed. like, summoning or making things perhaps

your thoughts 4e peoples?

Good idea!

- The party was assembled by Ephestral, First Hand and assistant to Master Rael, one of the three most powerful mages in existence, to steal back seven orbs he had one of his armies, the Furies, steal from Aluxial, another of the mages, before they betrayed him and stationed themselves on Vandoran, a small island chain. He can't take the orbs back himself, so he needs a third party.
- Despite the ridiculously lavish reward he offered, Ashara attempted to betray his sexist, racist ass the first opportunity she had, only to learn the Furies are equally racist.
- The weakest and youngest Fury, Raita, Lady of Acid, was defeated in a surprisingly easy battle, and taken prisoner despite Rael's offer of a reward if she was thrown off of the island and returned to him.

Did you guys like Rael and Ephestral? Not as people, obviously, but as characters.

In that case, may I recommend taking the Fey Beast Tamer theme instead? It's straight-up better than sacrificing your class features for the weak, weak ranger beast, since the mobs you get from it can actually do something. If you still want to play a ranger, I'd recommend going with either a two-blade or archer style ranger instead.

He's not doing a beastmaster so the beastmastery rules are kinda irrelevant (and bad tbqh). The owlbear is indeed with him always and comes back if killed by spending a healing surge.

Quick Draw looks unnecessary to me. Have you considered Master At Arms instead? It provides a similar benefit but with an Expertise boost.

As for Escape Artist, are you going to end up in that position often? If not I wouldn't bother with it, especially since archer rangers can camp at the edge of their range to pewpew people and have AMAZING 'gtfoutta here' utilities. You might not need Durable, either, unless you're planning on diving into melee, and then you'd probably want an AC boost instead. If it's for raising the companion, don't worry, it won't die THAT much.

Then there's powers. Really, the only two things I'd consider is Fox's Cunning instead of the double-shooter at level 1 (because three attacks a turn is great and doing it twice per encounter rocks, though the double shooter works for now), and potentially Flying Steel at level 5, or Spitting Cobra Stance. The rest is all good. Remember, you want to use Twin Strike round after round if possible, and instead pick off-action attacks. Standard-Action shots are only good if they bring more than just a damage modifier, like CC or three hits.

"FEY BEAST COMPANION ACTIONS
While you are within 20 squares of your fey beast companion, it relies on your guidance. You take actions so that it can act, and during an encounter its initiative is the same as yours.

Standard Actions: For your fey beast companion to take a standard action, you must take a standard action to command it to do so.

Move Actions: Whenever you take a move action, your fey beast companion can also take a move action. Alternatively, you can stay put but take a move action to command your fey beast companion to take a move action.

Minor Actions: For your fey beast companion to take a minor action, you must take a minor action to command it to do so.

Free Actions: Your fey beast companion can take a free action without your taking an action to command it.

Triggered Actions: If one of your fey beast companion's triggered actions is triggered, the companion can take that action only if you take the same kind of action to command it to do so. For example, if an enemy adjacent to your companion provokes an opportunity attack from it, you must take an opportunity action to command your com-panion to make the attack.

Acting Independently: In situations when you can't give commands to your fey beast companion, it can act independently. For example, if you are unconscious or more than 20 squares away from your companion, it doesn't sit around waiting for you (unless that's what you commanded it to do). A fey beast companion acting independently does not have a full complement of actions on its turn. Instead, on its turn, it can take a standard action, a move action, or a minor action. It can also take opportunity actions and free actions, but it cannot take immediate actions. "

Well, yes, that just makes it even worse that you have to go to a lot of inconvenience to get full mileage.

If you can show me the circumstances where having perma-CA and a +2 to YOUR and your party's damage loses to a monster's piddly damage, I'll be very surprised. Trust me Scep, read the book. Just not worth it.

...Scep, go read the theme. Seriously. It gives you permanent CA against targets your fey beast is next to. Go find Heroes of the Feywild, it's an awesome book and worth the cash.

Oh. I do have it, but I wasn't looking at the extra stuff later. I see it now.
