It's mostly as good or better, despite the fun silliness of the original, but what the hell is Argath. "Algus" is a much better name, and that's not nostalgia or anything.

Yeah some of the names are a bit sketchy. They got a major league obsession with cramming the letter "R" into everything.

The PSP translation is much better, from what I've seen. They did make the names sound weird though. And the game is slow.

ARGATH was misunderstood he was a great guy

everyone hated him but i wonder why

think about it for a moment and you will see

why ARGATH overcame catastrophe

he stood up for justice and nobility true

but then he was slain in his fertility

they say you can't hold a great man down

and so ARAGTH rose from the ground

a dark knight he would become

saying the words "i am come"

lucavi try to possess this great one

but he only responds "i ain't your hun"

look at this man this manly of men

and you will see the one made of win

Never hurt me! Now if you're going to tell that the bolded part of what I listed as examples (largely off of the top of my head) for the PSX translation doesn't hurt your head then I'm going to have to bow down and admit you're on a higher plane than anyone else on Board 8, because I'll be damned if that one doesn't strain my brain every time!

Unfortunately, as a side effect of your increased brainwaves you've lost the ability to read War of the Lions properly! Sad face! :(

the bolded part hurt my brain back in the day. now it just makes me smile!

my issue with the PSP translation is that it seems like it was purposefully obscured to better mesh with the FFXII release. a lot of times I have to re-read it just to figure out what they're trying to say. it's wordy and bothersome.

the PSX translation is of course famously bad but at least it wasn't on purpose! and I'm willing to forgive a lot when you have such great lines as "rebels plotting rebellion" and "Then I guess we must fight! Eyaaaaargh!!" to your credit.

I guess I can see your point even if I wind up on the opposite end of the spectrum. And I've never meant to insinuate that I think Smith chose a fantastic style for the PSP version; it was obviously meant as a tie-in with FFXII but suffered from being about twice as pretentious as FFXII.

I honestly believe Smith got it just right with FFXII, come to think of it. There wasn't a single line in the game that made me groan but for a small handful of over-the-tops from a Judge or two.

Just posting to say that while the PSP translation is better on the whole, BlackMageJawa chose an awful example. "Blame yourself or God" is more direct, more powerful, and streamlines that painful "Olde Englishe" out of the dialogue, which is always nice.

Nope. But given the results on the two attempts I'll take the first over the second.

FFT PSP made plenty of sense, as far as its dialogue was concerned. Dunno how you'd have a harder time following it than the original.

Most of the original translation made sense and was easy to follow. Awkward at times, but usually not difficult to understand. I guess the same is true for the PSP translation, but there's a fair amount of straight up grammatically incorrect stuff, and loads unnecessary flower to everything.

If you were more into FFT's story for the silly translation, though, I guess I can understand that!

whenever I play the game these days I usually skip through the dialogue as fast as it'll let me, so I guess it actually doesn't matter. but yeah I appreciate how silly the original is

Outside of one or two of Dycedarg's Elder Brothers FFT's original translation is completely readable which is all a good translation needs really. It's mostly a matter of preference at that point-- whether you want some slightly awkward sounding lines or some ye olde English nonsense.

Lag is the killer, though. I noticed it at first and didn't think it was that bad. Then I swapped for the PS1 version and never went back, because yeah, it was.

Nah, the original has some completely unreadable lines, and others that make no real sense. It's a poor effort all around, and by no real stretch could it ever been considered a 'good translation,' regardless of one's feelings about what they did with the PSP version. Lag is a killer, though - it was almost bad enough to make me want to avoid using skills. It's passable to some people, I guess, but the slowdown was brutal. Definitely the one bad mark on the PSP version. No reason they couldn't have spent some time working on that!
