I remember everyone adoring them in 2008-9, me included. They've always had some fuzzy moments, but it was never this bad.
ZFS posted... I dunno, Capcom's business decisions have seemed pretty consistent for years. They've always been into re-releases and ports and expansions.
Yeah, but they were still good, which is why people didn't care. Capcom's game quality has been extremely spotty lately, and that's added to the other extra problems they've been having. And now they're canceling games. There are currently 0 Mega Man games in development. And they didn't have anything as expansiony as a $40 version of The Mercenaries.
Yeah, I'd agree that they're not making as many interesting games today. They've slipped a bit since SF4, but I don't think Capcom as a business has changed much. Hard to think of a Capcom game I'm looking forward to, though!
Street Fighter X Tekken is one Capcom game I'm looking forward to. But yeah, haven't had a single-player Capcom game interest me in a while, RE5 being the most recent one.

ZFS posted... shadow battles is this as bad as it sounds
Shadow Battles are essentially vs CPU mode because they thought they'd make a few extra bucks from charging a dollar for themed CPU battles.
But you can win titles from it! And considering your fighter card is going to be the most viewed thing from you online, since the game sacrificed spectator mode for " Watch the cards hump and grind each other " mode, I'd say it's pretty good deal!

Street Fighter I'll give ya, but at least the yearly Mega Man titles (those Pokemon-style Battle Network and Star Force games with the two/three separate versions being the exception) were different games with completely different levels, weapons, and enemies.

Well they were Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Resident Evil 4 so...yeah.
It's going to be hilarious playing through FINAL FANTASY VII and Xenogears in the next few months right the fall of Square continues before our very eyes.

The closest thing I've done is...play through Super Metroid a week after Other M's release. That felt so surreal it wasn't even funny.

Double Edit: Oh, I see what you're trying to get at, but whoring out is still whoring out. They're 'different', sure, but NES Mega Man is pretty much the poster child for whoring out a series.

Great post of truth here. Two of what were the best companies, now kind of suck. I mean Capcom still has some good stuff, but the quality has gone down drastically. You'll find all that quality at Platinum Games now.

See, I'm of the viewpoint that if the games are good and reasonably different (which the NES games are), I don't care if they're "whored out" or whatever other evil motivation a for-profit company has for making them.
Honestly I'd still say Street Fighter 2 has Mega Man beat there anyway.

Street Fighter II being more whored out does not change the fact that NES Mega Man is the poster child for something being whored out. Heck, Street Fighter II is just applying what they did with NES Mega Man to fighting games!
With Street Fighter 2 I feel like it was a little different. Companies couldn't really put out balance patches back in those days. A new version of a game was the only way to tweak it and maintain the community.
Like really, SF2's multiple versions felt like a way to support and sustain the community, rather than attempts to suck the community dry like what Capcom is doing today.
Capcom really does need to straighten themselves out. If they go full cloister mode (keep doing what they've been doing for the last 2 years), they're going to be the company to prove that Inafune was right about the Japanese game industry.
Resident Evil 4 is great and all, but if you think it, okami, and sf4 hold a candle to the greatness of capcom pre 2004ish.....then lol. Even if u consider RE4 the best game ever made, 3 games dont make a company a top company over 8 years.
Maybe capcom would be better if they stopped with all the ports and remakes, and actually take their existing franchises in one direction (instead of half assing mega man into what seems like 5 different genres).
Capcom would also be better off if they stopped abusing DLC, and created new franchises that are changes of pace from the genres of their already existing major franchises.
DLC is probably the dumbest thing about this gen, and this gen has some horribly dumb things about it.

dlc is another one of those in theory good, in practice bad.
Just like when companies merge. Like how many of us first though square enix was gonna be great having the 2 biggest RPG companies merge into one super company.
Or how the G4 and TechTV merger ruined a decent channel in old G4, and ruined an amazing channel in TechTV?

Be completely fair, there are a few companies that do DLC right, like Bioware. I hate DAO, but the one thing it did really, really well was DLC that actually deserved to be DLC and wasn't too blatant a money grab.

bioware is ok with its DLC i guess. I wouldnt say they "do it right", they just dont **** it up at capcom levels.
As much as the series/genre was beaten into the ground, i always though the guitar hero games actually also had semi-fair DLC. Maybe a little pricey, but they didnt make their DLC stupid stuff like "omg new outfit for slash lookalike!". Too bad Guitar Hero sucked past 3.
