I think Mario Kart 8 is pretty inescapable, whenever I talk to anybody who doesnt play that many games but gets a Switch, they always go to Mario Kart 8. And having played both SSBU and MK8 in party settings, MK8 definitely goes down better with the more casual crowd. Also getting an attach rate of over 40% on what is likely to become the highest selling system of all time is just absurd.

Theres very limited occasions where I interact with kids but the only three times ever I let a kid use my switch all three IMMEDIATELY freaked out that I didnt have MK8. Like they could not comprehend me not having it

Theres also the fact that, even adjusting for the size of the gaming audience at the time, not that many people had an N64. 8 is much more prevalent, not just looking at raw numbers.

SMW SM64 MK8D SM64 is the only one you can't go without. I can see subbing out...
...but SM64 is safe. Also, New Mario-anything we've seen from that side-series so far ain't ever getting in. They just aren't good enough yet for this conversation and Mario fans sniffed that out a long time ago. SM64 First two are easy. Last two, not so much. SMB1 saved gaming, and it should really be an unanimous inclusion as a simple measure of respect for the most important game of all time. SM64 changed gaming, and while it's ok if not everyone has it in their lists, it just makes sense in the same way the first iconic coloured film should prolly be on a movies Rushmore. After that it gets difficult. SMB3 was huge, SMW was huge, but like...all Mario games are huge. The two SMB2 combined sold over 10 million copies without ever being pack-in games (which unambiguously helped SMB3 sell 18m). Sales, I think, are not enough when evaluating which Marios deserve to get the nod over others. I feel like, more than any other videogame series, Mario games have to be evaluated by their impact on other games, and not just their own franchise. Given that, I kinda lean away from SMB3 and SMW. Can anyone say that they really changed the course of platformers in a way SMB1 didn't? So the question is...what Mario games had the most outsized impact? My gut says there should be one rep for 'casual' or 'party' gaming, which means either a Mario Kart or a Mario Party game, but the last slot is difficult to settle on. Mario 3 and World's influence on platformers is so pervasive that you probably don't even think about it or you consider it "standard Mario stuff" because those games standardized it.

Then it was a matter of picking the spinoff game that most cemented Mario's versatility. Super Mario 64 New Super Mario Bros. Wii Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game that started it. game that moved it to 3D. game that revived the series in 2D. literally one of the best selling games year over year over the past almost decade and represents spinoffs better than anything. really is impossible to deny NSMB as a success story. it's weird seeing as much fighting over it, fact is that's what redefined 2D Mario again and it has the numbers to prove it. hell you can even use time as the measurement - the list of new 2D Mario games goes from World in 1990 all the way to 2006 with the DS NSMB. Wii version comes out 3 years later and sets the standard. that is a 16 year gap. the DS didn't quite do what Miyamoto wanted it to do but the Wii one did and it's how the game is played now. 2D Mario was straight up dead until that series came up and the most influential entry is the Wii one. which is funny because 2D Mario proved, with that series, to outsell its 3D counterpart with ease. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... Calling 2D Mario dead up until that point is super misleading. I mean, I see what you're trying to say but it makes it sound like it hadn't sold or been good for a while, they were still super beloved and played. Whole industry was working with 3D for that first decade of it where it evolved a lot. That was the focus, we probably don't get 2D Mario remakes on GBA otherwise but those also sold fine. It's not like it was super impressive to make 2D Mario appealing and honestly, slapping New on the title and calling a day shows how much they knew the strong foundation they had.

It just doesn't at that time make sense to talk about 2D Mario and 3D Mario as two different things. The franchise was very much alive (sure Sunshine wasn't the strongest but yeah). It just evolved with the industry which at one point included a transition to 3D.
