I mean, I see what you're trying to say but it makes it sound like it hadn't sold or been good for a while, they were still super beloved and played. Whole industry was working with 3D for that first decade of it where it evolved a lot. That was the focus, we probably don't get 2D Mario remakes on GBA otherwise but those also sold fine.
