So are you. As it stands, it's not a bad tip. It's especially dumb, because I'm general it's not a low amount of money, so being a bitch about it is way worse.

And it's still a reasonable tip. The tipping culture demanding progressively more is the exact reason I refuse to bother with these places.

The customer is not the villain here, and anyone that would paint them out to be is the reason tipping culture won't die.
No, by all metrics, it's a cheap-ass tip. She could have made the same or more on a table that spent half as much. Arguing what you think a fair tip would be in a more ideal world isn't the same as arguing about the reality of what they did tip in relation to the normal expected industry standard that most people agree to pay.

Whilst I never did eat out much, I have long since stopped eating out altogether - even a little sandwich or coffee shop have those machines that always ask for tips so I progressively just been patroning less and less. Which is actually working out well for my finances here all things considered.

I don't like a system that pits me against servers whilst the big mice make bank, or where I have to do some mental social calculation of worth just to pay for something and get on with my damn day, but I still tipped because the mice are so large and the servers so small tipping is just how it works for them to survive.

The only winning move I could end up justifying to myself was just not playing.

One can acknowledge the reality of the system while voicing strong ideas about how it should change, you know. It sounds like you're for keeping quiet about how things should be while they're not that way, but that's not how change happens.
No, I'm saying not tipping or getting angry at an employee is not the way to go. Scream all you want at the right people, while continuing to play the hand you're currently dealt until the change happens.

% based tipping has and always will be an idiotic system and needs to go.

A lot of times I eat out by myself and the bill comes to around $60 or so. The amount of work the waitress -might- do for me is..

Take order
Fill up a drink from the fountain
Drop food off
Slowly take ages taking my payment so I can go

To think they believe that little amount of "service" is worth $10-$20 is delusional.

True. For me in the UK I will tip either 10% or a fixed amount Ive decided in my head.

Whatever is higher.

On the flip side the people saying they need to increase the % due to inflation ticks me off as well. If the food prices have gone up due to inflation then obviously the tip will as well if its a % of the cost of the food.

Do they have a lobby that constantly fights back against fair wages for servers? Another NRA is against helping society.

https://restaurant.org/issues-and-advocacy/policy-agenda/tipping/

"The tip credit and tipping system provide tipped employees with greater earning potential and restaurant owners the ability to invest in their non-tipped employees and businesses.

Eliminating the option of the tip credit and tipping system would force restaurant operators to switch to an hourly wage system, reducing earnings, hours, and jobs for employees.

Restaurant employees, operators and customers nationwide support the existing tip credit and tipping system. The existing system provides strong worker protections and helps tipped workers earn a median of $27 an hour, with some tipped workers making $41.50 an hour in take-home pay. Eliminating the tip credit would not be a pay raise for tipped workers.

The restaurant industry urges Congress to protect prosperity for restaurant workers and operators by preserving the tip credit and tipping system."

Customers and employers can both be wrong. Why can't you guys just follow societal norms and fight to change them in the meantime?

Normally I don't even bother starting to read 150+ post topics, but this is quite an interesting one.

I have a simple solution: If your employer doesn't pay you enough to live, find another job.

If your employer starts raising their prices to 'be able' to pay a living wage, then the customers should en masse not go back to that establishment, forcing the owner to lower their prices making less profit or shut down entirely.

Problem with this is people will need to start taking responsibility for their own lives instead of making exuses so they can point to others.

That said, the country I live in doesn't have any % based system. If I eat in a restaurant and the service is good, the waitress gets 10 euros, if not, she gets nothing.

Same with food delivery. If they charge delivery costs, no tip. If they don't and the food is on time 2-5 euros depending on what I have lying around in change. Be more than 5 minutes late, no tip

No, but neither is the customer, nor the employer. People are responsible for their own lives. Don't get paid enough to live? Ask for a raise or get another job, it's that simple.

Only way things will ever change is by taking responsibilty for your own life and stop pointing at others or making up excuses

If I complain about my shitty job and shitty pay (it's fine), my customers would not give a shit either, everyone would tell me to look for another job. Especially everyone here on CE.

You prefer to punish the exploited worker who bears no fault in the system, making it harder for them to get by on their meager wages? Don't try to frame that as a stance against an exploitative system; be honest with yourself and admit that it's about justifying apathy.

I think a big part of the problem is that people have been conditioned to see going out to eat as just another meal choice to weigh against eating in. Dining out is meant to be something of a treat; something you do when you have the money to spend on the full experience/service, not something you do multiple times per week as an easy alternative to popping some chicken in the oven.
