Her anger is misdirected.

The tipping system makes working people fight each other, while the owner class laughs and counts the profits.

Instead of being rude about a customer not paying her tuition, ask why her employer won't pay a living wage, and why she has to pay so much for an education in the first place.

I went to a restaurant at the weekend. When we got the bill it included an itemised amount for the service. That should be the standard.

The actual answer is post-slavery conditions and racism in general.

Here's one of the easiest to consume articles on the topic.

I don't tip less than 15% as a practice but since this waiter seems to be a terrible peron, I would give them that 15%.

My scale is 15% means you were terrible, 18% is average, 20% is a rock star.

Yeah.

Plus, even if her wage was the $4/hr wait staff was/is paid in the past that tip alone would bring it up to about $20 for that hour, and she definitely didn't spend the entire hour focused on that one table(so even if she splits tips there would be other tips in that hour).

Weirdest part of tipping culture is how it comes with public shaming. Either shaming customers for being stingy, or shaming servers for demanding more.

This wouldn't be necessary if the expectations of payment were all clear and transparent upfront instead of implied. You know, like on the price menu.

Tipping based on price of food is really stupid. A McDonalds quality burger and a plate of Wagyu beef imported from Japan should theoretically receive the same tip.

Providing service is a cost. A cost that should be built in to the overall price.

The owner doesn't expect contributions to the rent of their premises, or the cost of paying their suppliers, at the customer's discretion. Why should staff wages be treated differently?

And that's the issue.

How tf should I know if their restaurant is paying a living wage or not? If the low wages are the reason for this, than they should come out and show on the menu how bad they pay their employees.

Just going around and saying "well, the customer is supposed to voluntary pay a living wage" is just bs.

Why should the customer be responsible for a living wage? All the cost and profit calculation is done by the restaurant. I have no idea to know how much of my 100 total goes to, what was the calculated food for cost, infrastructure, wages and profits.

"She should take it up with her employer"

Cool, and while we're busy redoing American society, she and others will still be getting stiffed by assholes. Passing laws will remove tipping culture. Employers don't give a fuck about your civil disobedience. You aren't hurting them.

If everyone stopped tipping tomorrow, employers would just wonder why their employees suck so bad at their jobs. It wouldn't fix anything.

Customers have no problem voluntarily overpaying for everything else and helping assholes make profit, but a tip that directly goes to a low-level employee? Well that's just a bridge too far! My money is not for paying other people!

This is the evil genius of the tipping system. Working people rage at customers for bring 'cheapskates', while customers (also working people), resent being guilted into paying more to make up the wages of the servers.

Meanwhile, the owners sit smiling on a big pile of money and say 'let them fight!'.
