Yeah, I'm over it.
5 years in this old, OLD house and I'm trying to GTFO.
Just found out at beginning of December that I need to replace $25-30k worth of plumbing underneath the foundation, running from the bathroom to the backyard. That's not gonna happen, it's definitely the next person's problem.

If the inspector the next person hires notices it, they might force you to pay for it, or force you to take it out of the price of the house.

I pretty much required the sellers to fix any "issues" that the house was going to have for at least the first 5 years I owned it.

Depending on where you live you may be required by law to disclose any issues you are aware, specifically for reasons like this.

As a fellow homeowner and lazy person, I concur. I will say however, having had a number of renter friends get shafted recently, I still do not regret buying a house.

This woman came to my house yesterday, trespassed onto my yard and touched my property

So we go buy no trespassing signs to put up and my boyfriend was out putting them up at the same time this morning that lady showed up and this happened

Unfortunately with my Casualty insurance background I know a sign like that would land me in trouble if I ever did have to use my firearm against someone on my property. A sign like that shows intent and desire to murder. It doesn't just show you're defending your property. That's my professional opinion.

Right? I just want quiet, peaceful enjoyment of my property. That belongs to me. That I pay for. It's not for general public consumption. Unfortunately, I'm the only house on the street that doesn't have a front fence so people always use my driveway to backup. We just put cones and a chain across the driveway with a sign now so people leave us tf alone.

For me the biggest complaint I usually have is keeping the yard mowed and weeded on a regular basis. It's a fairly big yard and I have mild grass allergies, so it's unpleasant every time. But it's worse if I procrastinate doing it and then have to really hack through it later.

Though it can also be annoying when you think you've got everything under control for once and then suddenly you get a bad storm and the roof springs a leak or the basement floods. Especially if you've got other stuff going on and are too busy to really want to deal with it, but you have to anyway because ignoring stuff like that only makes everything worse.

I got to a point where I just pay some guy in the neighborhood to cut my grass. My yard isn't huge, but it is an old property with older trees, so the ground tends to be rougher than yards in more modern houses.

So far I've had to replace a roof, the windows and the furnace/AC unit. Only 'major' thing left is the siding at this point. (knock on copious wood)

As much as I'd feel the same about the upkeep, I wish I could afford a house within walking distance of my work. I'd have to keep the yard simple to reduce the amount of maintenance required, but still. I'd love a substantial donation for such a purchase, but I'm not counting on it. lol

I was able to make use of a first time homebuyer's program to get into my home. I paid maybe $2,500 out of pocket to buy a house lol. Then I got a month of financial break because you don't pay your mortgage for the first month. Then it was like paying rent again except towards my own home. I couldn't believe how lucky I got.

This was a big reason I was I insistent on either a Condo (which I ended up buying) or a townhouse. Yeah, HOA fees are annoying, but it is comforting knowing the emergencies are covered. Dont care about the yard or anything of that sort.

I refuse to live under an HOA after handling claims involving them at work and seeing what they do. I was lucky enough to get a house in a non-HOA neighborhood so that was great. It would be nice to have my neighborhood have more cohesive greenery all over and stuff to look nicer but I'd rather live on a street with a guy who has 18 broken down cars parked around his house then deal with an HOA.

Did you at least buy a top floor condo? Or is it side by side?

Side by side, I believe. Second floor. Plus, within waking distance of work, which is great.

Luckily, I dont love in a HCOL area, so I got this for a good price. Minnesota is still affordable thankfully, while still have a strong economy. I genuinely think our weather will keep us from ever being gentrified the way some other states have.

Canada, yes. A one bedroom apartment is minimum $1500 a month here. Minimum wage is something like $1800 a month. I make well above minimum wage but after taxes and so on there isn't enough left st the end of the month to put away for a rainy day fund and a deposit on a house. In my town a $400k home wod be a fixer uper.

I just always caution people to NEVER BUY BOTTOM FLOOR CONDOS in a stacked property. All the water intrusions in the building will come into your unit and flood causing damage. 9 times out of 10 you will need to file on your own insurance policy because there is no negligence. You will be filing constant water loss claims and paying deductibles without recovery.

Yeah, housing costs here are about that much. It's like $1200 for a studio, $1800 for a one bedroom mostly. You can find a range of $1500 - $4,500 for a one bedroom depending where you're at. Minimum wage here just went to $14.35 on January 1st of this year. But, that's a struggle amount to even rent anymore. Rent is constantly rising.

I kinda saw I was getting phased out of my preferred rental area in 2019 and rushed to buy a house. It is really lucky I was shopping at that time. I also got a grant for $18,500 from the state government to go towards my down payment and closing costs. If I didn't have that, I would never have been able to buy a house.

Yeah because most homeowners were fortunate enough to buy before 2021 lol. But really, yeah you don't have to be a millionaire but you better either have two decent incomes or one really good one. Either that or you have to move somewhere that absolutely nobody wants to live far as hell away from any halfway big city

Unless you prefer this as a way to "trap" thieves, but even in that case video evidence that someone might have trespassed is not as clear cut as some think that it proves she had ill intentions or did something. Even in the case you have something more than that you better be able to know exactly who it is and not just some rando that lives nearby.

So you have the benefits of renting without any of the dealing with a landlord BS?

I have had my house for almost 13 years at this point, and I have had to replace every appliance in it except the heater (likely will be replaced this summer since it is 24 years old), the washer (likely needs to be replaced since it leaks water ever time I use it) and the dryer (Dryer will probably last forever, although I did replace the belt on it a few years back). I also have to replace the deck, and in a few years probably the roof.

That said, despite all of that, I still would never rent again.

Yeah mine is a new build too so I just have random things here and there for now that fail. But it's still more work than renting because I'm responsible for managing the repairs and paying for them personally.
