Maraud is sweet, has some really fun rhythms, and I really love the part going on at 1:11. One of those things I dunno how to explain why I love that part but I do (though the sub-sub section at 1:16 part of it less so). Don'tWorry , is a song that has some cool techno sounds but rhythms just feel really plain by comparison. Also singing I don't care for makes the decision even easier. I feel like some parts of this song feel like it could be missing something too.

I don't like the counting man in Colress. King Noah has a cool funny buzz going on right at the start. I think I'm not in a mood for in depth write ups right now I guess oh well. Both of these songs are pretty neat but I don't want to listen to counting man. King Noah has some cool variety. But also feels a bit...repetitive? shrug

sound volt extreme piano. Starry Heavens has some cool instrumentation, if it didn't have The Singing the match might be close for me. Probably isn't the kind of song that would do too well with just removing vocals though. the Valkyrie would probably still win unless Starry Heavens had something added this hypothetical's getting silly

Apostle's Maraud is possibly my favorite discovery of nominations phase! It's so good~ I feel like I'm racing and dodging and diving and ducking and weaving and otherwise swirling all around enemy fire and I can't praise it enough.

Don't Worry is basically on the exact other side of stuff I like, but it's also something I super like. This definitely wouldn't make my top 10 Sawano tracks, but it's still solid.

this reminds me of handheld sonic music, only it's not as good as those. It's very much just there to me.

King Koah wasn't doing that hot with me and then it got into this Serial Experiments Lain thing at 1:30 and I basically dug it from that point on.

preserved valkyria, because it's been preserved since the last time it was in vgmc okay i'll see myself out.

Is too tough. Man, that's gotta be the best main series Pokemon battle theme I've ever heard, if not the outright best track in the main series. I love the ambiguous tonality. Oh hey Maraud's actually pretty good! Definitely one of the better losers so far for me. I love Don't Worry other than the part where it changes things 3/4 of the way through. The start is so fucking amazing that I almost don't mind it playing a billion times every time you accidentally fly for 10 seconds.

Battle more like Baddle mirite. It's okay but not great. Honestly not a fan of King Noah either. Very drony.

Final battle is very tough. I like both of these songs quite a lot! Would be happy with either winning. PV feels a little more me, but SH I've been into for so long... Toughest match so far!

Match 1: Apostle's Maraud is amazing and is my favorite discovery this year alongside Flightless. Thank you fake Ace Combat. Generic melodic techno loops with cheesy vocals are cool, but Apostle's Maraud is leagues beyond everything else today.

Match 2: The countdown in Colress is cool, not sure if I'd rank it above the other Pokmon stuff in this year, but it grows on me with each listen. King Noah just isn't my thing at all.

ToC: I'm honestly not sure how either of these retired. Going with Starry Heavens because it sounds like every nostalgic 2001 anime opening. This is the first match where I've voted against what I initially picked in my favorites bracket! (it's close)

Wow. Love this song; it reminds me of something. Maybe some of the piano-heavier Touhou songs, at least at the beginning. But then it goes off and does its own thing, which is also good. For the second contest in a row, I feel like the overall quality of VGMC is a lot higher than I remembered in years past! This song's pretty long but I can't stop it early because it's still doing new things well into the song.

My initial impression of Don't Worry was "generically good song"--a fodder-catcher, but not the type of thing I'd vote for over a good song. That was before the lyrics kicked in. After that...I'd say my opinion's a little worse! It's not a bad song, but it's not great.

I do love me some Pokmon battle themes. For some reason I didn't even remember this one! I mean, when I was younger I usually played my Game Boy with the sound all the way down, but I thought I'd gotten out of that habit by the time B2W2 game out! This is crazy cool.

...Man this day is weak. And I wrote that before the shift in King Noah about 45 seconds in. Please go away.

Oh hey Preserved Valkyria! Was hoping that the ToC would bail this day out. And this is epic! Pretty sure I don't remember the Tales of Symphonia soundtrack having anything that could measure up to this, but of course I'll check. Only disappointment is that it's so short!

...Huh. Must've been from the original Japanese soundtrack. Or it's just been so long. This is entirely in character with the game that made 15-year-old Tsunami get a new AIM handle relating to it the moment he saw it on the cover of Nintendo Power. Or was it 14? *checks game case* 14. Symphonia came out in '03. G-d I was such a weeaboo back then.

man Apostle's Maraud was a roller coaster, for the first 38 seconds I was like holy SHIT this is gonna be incredible and then I was like oh no I got duped by PROG but it's still pretty good and then around three minutes it went back to the intro-ish and I got -warily- hype but it actually kept going and yeah this owns. Don't Worry exists

Second match is close - both are fine but neither stands out to me.

Unlike Memories of You, when I started following VGMC9 I was very confused by Starry Heavens retiring. Valkyria's run was also kinda weird iirc but it's great so whatevs

i like the start of king noah it makes me think about songs by dubmood that i have heard in various agar.io clones and that one free touhou clone on steam jigoku kisetsukan which is also good but then it stops being that which would be fine except it is also dubstep kind of and i do not like that. then it does other things and tries to get me back on board but it doesn't make me forget the bad impression that part left on me, which is unfortunate because it might've been a kinda hard match otherwise... well, i might've still gone with colress. love that battle theme. gen 5 battle themes are kind of all over the place but the good ones are really really really good and it is absolutely among them

penoreri more like penovery good. i hope more songs from him get in in the future. however... starry heavens though. i'm weak against this very specific type of classic anime song, and it is a very definitive example of it. even though i doubt anyone else is on the board period, i'm still very happy it against all odds managed to retire when it did

-(Apostle's Maraud is my 4th favorite in the contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is the type of music I've been most into lately, stuff with complex chords/chord changes with this exact type of energy & maybe especially if on big orchestra instrumentation that feels very full and intense or maybe even EIPC(epic) [[or maybe just tense or mysterious?! many other possible emotions]]. aka "music that sounds like basiscape or literally is basiscape (hi basiscape song)ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO LISTEN TO A BASISCAPE ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKALWAYS A PLEASURE TO L_4-4o4----G__H+_H I love yoshimi kudo video game music composer : ) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:38-1:04 and all the sections like it are both way weirder rhythmically than it seems and way more normal rhythmically than it seems. without drums it's not really possible to follow the NEWS STATION stabs but at :50 once the guitar comes in it becomes more clearly like 12+13+12+11. that technically just adds up to 12/8 or whatever so i didn't really think of it as odd time in my head but those bits are so precisely split apart from each other that thinking of it as 12/16+13/16+12/16+11/16 probably makes more sense than anything else to me to feel it now, though it doesn't feel that way to me without the guitar. without the guitar i naturally feel those string news station stab pattern moment parts completely differently. like 11+14+10+13. I've always loved NEWS STATION music and Hitoshi Sakimoto music has been music I've compared to "news station themes" like 9 separate times so it's kind of funny that even the people who work for Hitoshi Sakimoto's music company(basiscape) known as Yoshimi Kudo also sound just as much like NEWS STATION information song as hitoshi sakimoto. really the whole song is like "ultimate news station fanfare rollercoaster variations" or something really, not just the obvious telegraph morse code part

When the section starting at 1:04 happens I'm reminded of how yoshimi kudo seems to really love to use these exact 7+7+7+9 15 patterns in so much of his music and intersperse them with normal 7+9 4/4 stuff to kinda blur the line between "prog" and "funky normal music", or even just 7+7 7/8 vs 7+9. given that 'ambiguity' is a thing i like, it's right up my alley, really smoothly makes it so there's not that much of a difference between the odd time and the not odd time bits in the section alternating between these groupings. beyond the MATH stuff it's just, funky. feels cool. I like it : ) I like music!

WHEN i like Yoshimi Kudo's tonality it's among my favorite music that exists, but when i do not like it i really dislike it....luckily all 3 of his songs in the contests (this one and the two 13sentinels ones) are examples where I LOVE it. the best example of a moment where this is exemplified in this track for me is 1:12. very unexpected abrupt chord changes that require really intensely different scales/etc to be played over them for the music to make any sense, it's 'basically' changing key every second but in a much more mysterious and trippy way than other examples of that kind of thing i've talked about this contest like id. still has the same emotionally intense effect on me but rather than "whoa epic" my reaction is like "whoa trippy" and i like that a bit more i think. it feels like i am IN THE SKY in a shmup game doing something dangerous and uncertain.

I LOVE The woodwind layer that jumps onto the melody at 2:31. i like the instrumentation of this overall a ton though i wish i liked the way it was mixed more. like my only complaint about this at all. want to be able to hear the electronic drums backing this a bit better and all of the instruments more clearly separated from each in a way that makes them easier to individually pick out from one another or something.

I love every section of this piece of music! Every single one makes me EXCITED. Another one of yoshimi kudo's signature things to me is how funky he manages to make "orchestral music" sound like at 4:02 the low strings arejust like whooooa i'm on the dance floor or something having a good time in my business attire(medieval knight armor). 4:15's rhythms aren't like that unusual or anything but something about that pattern the way it's presented here is REALLY INTENSE feeling and makes them feel unpredictable even though they're not. definitely one of my favorite bits

I like this song because I like electronic sounds that are cool. still never listened to this ost all the way through even though i've tried to a number of times, I love a good chunk that I've heard but this one's not really one that stands out to me, but i appreciate its general style anyways even if it isn't a standout example to me. If I focus on it I hear all the cool tiny synth sounds and whirring electronic drums and crazy production stuff that makes this as cool as it is. XCX's production is just Wow Cool Sounds overload. This is drenched with a certain type of really warpy resonant synth pad that's a sound i loved any time I hear something similar. Really all i have cool to say here is the sounds, the composition's not really my thing at all, but the sounds are cool enough to carry this to at least 115th place for me]-

Battle! (Colress) is my 13th favorite in the contest!! If he says "5, 4" at the beginning why isn't this song in 5/4 huh?!?! you FOoLISH man giving my the false hope. This is one of my favorite tracks in the pokemon series and one of the many tracks ascertaining Hitomi Sato's position as my favorite gamefreak composer. has a lot of my favorite traits pretty distinct to her, the futuristic crystalline chill(tense) synth chords permeating the atmosphere at every corner, and all these over-the-barline rhythms, strangely long phrases. I have a huge thing for transposing chord stabs and this track is littered with them beating you up every 1 second(s). One thing i think is kind of neat is the chords being transposed around are actually literally Major triads. That's a chord that's supposed to be like "The happy normal chord" but the way they're spammed at you here is ridiculously dark and artificial in its feel, maybe that SYMBOLIZES some...thing. 1:09-1:15's my favorite bit, 3+3+3+3+3.../16 over 4/4 polymeter in that low weird synth sound, one of my favorite feelings. :51 - :57 is a similar feeling. Whole thing is a pretty good example of like...a song that would absolutely not exist outside of gamefreak, it's literally...go ichinose arranging a hitomi sato composition that's clearly imitating junichi masuda battle themes. you can not get any more "this is what gamefreak sounds like and no other music in the world sounds like this" than that. This track is absolutely crazy to look at the sequence data of, it's all crammed into 12 channels somehow and all are constantly working themselves to death. What a soundtrack to be one of the last sequenced-by-necessity video game osts ever. There's so many little details in this one that it'd be impossible to satisfy myself and list them all. In summary it's a combination of a bunch of disparate contradicting elements I love (chill chords, tense chords, dark, beautiful, crazy sound design, proggy rhythmic complexity, dance music-adjacency) and it's wonderful to hear a rare example of them all in combination.

King Noah is my 95th favorite in the contest! This is a pretty unique style at so many parts, and mix of elements is really to my liking. Guitar loop at the start's pretty cool and I love the rate changing between slow<->fast oscillating in the other layer in the background there. The drum&bass breakbeat explosion wow crazy fake machine drums stuff is great. The production is nice and keeps this feeling full and effective. One cool feeling is how that lead that starts to be present around 1:05ish starts off very distorted & weak, almost not a thing you'd even notice. but as the track goes it gets more powerful and becomes the centerpiece. I feel like if I liked the actual composition of this more it'd be a tougher match here, but it's sold itself to me pretty strongly just through it's sound design/instrumentation choices.

I think King Noah is extremely cool but this isn't really a close match. Two really unique tracks and it's going to be sad to have to see either of them go really even if I have a clear preference.

Preserved Valkyria (7/10) this is pretty stereotypical rhythm game music, and I usually like that! My favorite part when this was in the real contest was always :23-29 for its insistence of difficulty to memorize its pattern, at this point that's still definitely my favorite part I guess. I was hoping I'd randomly like the other parts more this time around because I've often felt significant changes in opinion from the past in these ToC songs but I guess that's not the case here, well other than that I like the parts that aren't that part much less. Very intense fake piano O_o CRAZY. that imaginary person can move their fingers so fast it's just like a butter fly. I guess there's other random little moments like :10 - :13 that stick out to me. just random tiny fragments of this like that are significantly more interesting than the rest to me even if i like the "dramatic rhythm game song" aesthetic it exudes regardless of my actual interest in this particular example.

Starry Heavens (5/10) man I actually like the Tales of Symphonia ost no matter what the h8aters on boa8rd 8 (more like "board hate") say... but this...doiesn't actually sound like "tales of symphonia ost" at all so itdoesn't really count.... it just sounds like an anime song. and that's ok, sometimes I like that and i don't dislike this at all, it's just disappointing to see "tales of symphonia" and to realize what is being judged is not really "tales of symphonia"I guess the part around 2:12 actually kinda sounds like "tales of symphonia" in feeling but mostly not really. whoa 3:19 sounds like CLASSICAL music, it's the kind of thing i might think is cheesy sometimes (especially with guitars in the instrumentation) but in this case it's actually a very VERY welcome dip into variety, cool choice in the music. Also big fan of the 90s fake synth bell "fantasia / new age" sounds sprinkled through the whole piece of music in the background just like snow flakes (or more appropriately STARS) because i always like those : ) basically i just like the instrumentation and its adjacency to period-specific stuff i love. Immediately NOSTALGAIC. there's lots of background layers here that are really cool if i turn up the volume really loud but you can not hear them otherwise, wish they were mixed louder.

i don't know what i think of these scores i was way more positive about starry heavens than 5/10 implies but i also like it less than the persona thing i said was 5, oh well.

THIS REMINDS ME OF FIRE EMBLEM fates kind of. the brass and guitar and violins on this track all kind of mix together in my ears and it's extremely hard for me to pay attention to the track as a result. it's also very rhythmic it's easy to get lost in. the best way i can describe this song is there's 'width' to it but there's not a lot of 'height' the mental image i have for this song is a very tight squeeze between a ceiling and the sea. you can't move 'up'. i love the intro of this song though.

i gotta vote aimee blackschleger over raiden... for whatever reason a lot of the soundtracks she's sung in have been checkmarks for personal points in my life [fallen angel from p&swg is one song that especially stands out]. hiroyuki sawano i don't particularly care a LOT for his composition style is very edgy and gritty and dark and synth laden and IT FEELS LIKE A BATTLEFIELD cyberpunk. making this clear if this had no vocals i would have preferred apostle's maraud by some but aimee's vocals push this above it.

USUALLY I TYPE UP ALL THE SONG TITLES and go through in order but i'm doing this song first because i love it. it gives me the big 'ufo zooming around the world' vibe that i get from plok - beach which [is my favorite vgm of all time]. like these 'low sample rate glassy' sweeping synth leads that go everywhere AND THERE'S COOL COMPUTER NOISES IN THE BACKGROUND which are kind of like plok beach arps 5 343422221 `12412231. NUMBERS NUMBERS NUMBERS. CALCULATIONS. I AM A ROBOT. THERE'S COOL RAVE STABS IN THIS. at the end it feels like the whole 'order' of the song is falling apart and the ufo is crashing oh no!!! but then it restabilises itself and starts gliding all over the world and shooting INTENSE BZZZZZZZ VGM BEAM RAYS AT THE WORLD. def in my top 20 songs of the contest if not my top 10 lol. there's these cool deep echo sounds at 1:08 i love. THE POWER OF INTERSTELLAR COMPUTATIONAL DEVICE.

WOAH COOL GUITAR ARPS AT THE BEGINNING THANK YOU I APPRECIATE THIS and clicky beats and then it goes into DNB which sounds like a vacuum.... i like it when the vox instruments come in and then the vacuum sound goes away and then these shimmery background pads come in its cool very trancey it feels like i'm floating in an ocean of STARS. it goes all chop chop breakbeat-y after that which i like. this game is very hard!!! i remember having to force myself to take a break from it because i really wanted to complete it but it was really stressing me out. fond memories though, all things considered.

RHYTHM GANIME. 'how to make orchestra cool again'. IT HAS THESE COOL STACCATO SECTIONS OF STRINGS THAT I REALLY LOVE AT SECTIONS. also what's up with that piano lol it feels like you just took out all the keys from a keyboard threw them on a ground and they made sounds like they were still attached to a piano. the end of this song has vaguely the same rhythm as mega man elec man and some of the same chords as well it's like a 'dark world' version.

WOAH 2000S ANIME i like this thank you for nominating this . . . this has cool glittery pads at the beginning. after that it basically turns into what i think is late 90s early 2000s anime music COOL ORCHESTRA SOUNDS, GUITAR, drum kit and singer. IT REMINDS ME OF LIKE. JAM PROJECT... actually. same kind of production values. the people in jam project do mecha intros i like mecha intros therefore it makes sense i like this.

Flywrench - King Noah at 7.2 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! This song upsets me so much. The intro is so good. It shows so much promise. And then the song completely divorces itself from that and becomes a very uninteresting DnB disappointment. It tries coming back later. Too little too late. Perversely, if it removed the sections I like the most, I'd probably like it better. Don't play with my emotions, song.

Sound Voltex III - Preserved Valkyria at 8.6 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest! I had no recollection what this sounded like at all, besides "cool". Which turned out to be accurate! I feel like I was also mixing it up with the rhythm, maybe-SDVX song FL81 tried to get in like every year? Either way, good. I like the piano part at 1:10 precisely.

Tales of Symphonia - Starry Heavens at 7.2 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest! Generic weebshit but less good generic weebshit than Tonitrus. I like the noise at 1:38 I guess. I hate that I have no expectation to really like any Tales song because I feel like there's probably a bunch out there that I love and yet I never see any!! I had a good idea of what I was voting before even hearing this song and I hate that I'm proven right!!

Apostle's Maraud vs Don't Worry: I love the weather report type beat on Apostle's Maraud so much. After that it chills out for a bit and then suddenly the 4 minute mark hits and im like YOOOOOOOOOO. Overall its just a really fun track to listen to. Don't Worry is a different beast compared to Apsotle's Maraud. I love the melody, I love the lyrics, and I love the beat. It's a lot more fun to listen to than Apostle, but both are still very good.

Battle! (Colress) vs King Noah: The counting and occasional glitchiness on Colress carries this track so hard. The rest is still pretty good but man, the general vibe on this track is amazing. King Noah was very good until 0:42 hit, where for the rest of the song I was hoping we could come back to those earlier 42 seconds that would never come.

Preserved Valkyria vs Starry Heavens: Well Preserved Valkyria was... something? The song wasn't able to catch my attention in anyway, and felt more boring to me than anything. Thankfully Starry Heavens was here to save the day. I liked the vocals on this track, and the instrumental slapped a bit as well. Not bad at all.
