I was young, I didn't know what the WTC was and thought there were power plants on the TV (due to all the smoke). I was generally confused on what it meant to be attacked to this degree.

I'm sure I was shocked and in awe, though I was probably happy that school was cancelled for the foreseeable future.

Confusion. I was in 6th grade and was wondering why such a big deal was being made about a building (and then two buildings).

Keep in mind I grew up in a town with 900 people in it and the biggest building was the school, that probably had 250 people in it on its busiest day.

Maybe confusion, but I don't think I really knew what I was supposed to feel. Like I knew my mom was shaken up about it and there was a weird atmosphere in school, but to me it seemed like it was just another bad thing that happened on the news. Dunno when it was that I actually understood the gravity of it.

Our school was one of those ones that just made a brief announcement and then went on the rest of the school day as if everything was normal. So I didn't really find out the whole story until I got home from school.

So confusion, curiosity, and a little anger.

i rationalized it

was a bit of a misanthrope at the time. my attitude was frustration with what i thought was the myopia of the average person

that terrible stuff happened all over the world, but we only cared when it happens to someone close to us

it took getting a little older and seeing the energy and hope that people pour into their communities to understand

Surprise and a desire to know more. I remember the teachers were just as interested as the students were, so they wheeled in TVs to each class and we just watched the news and shuffled between classes when the bell rang. No one even pretended to do their job that day.

I was pretty confused. I was in fifth grade in NoVA, and our teacher turned on the TV after the first tower was hit so I saw the second plane crash into the second tower. Then our teacher told us not to talk to the other classes about it (I guess that was the policy the administration decided on). Peoples' parents were picking them up early all day, especially after the Pentagon was hit since that was local.

I definitely didn't fully understand the gravity of what had happened at the time, so seeing all of the adults react was pretty surreal.

Do kids even have wheeled around TV's at school nowadays?

Elementary and middle school that was all we had. My high school had small like 12 inch tube TVs mounted in every classroom(Some of the science classrooms had bigger tube TVs).

I was 8 years old and formed almost no permanent memories of the day.

It's honestly a little surprising to me that I remember almost nothing; especially considering my proximity. I was living on Long Island at the time and from what I've heard listening to other people's stories, kids were being pulled out of school left and right throughout the day.

My parents and everyone else I encountered that day must've been acting incredibly calm for me to not remember nearly anything. I also certainly did not understand the gravity of the situation.
