I definitely think the buildup in Shiki is "better" than the climax which felt lacking in some ways.

Not sure which part I'd actually say I like more though. I'm a fan of the whole thing more or less.

Chimera Ant is so good. I love mostly the whole thing for different reasons. Though, I do agree on Gon vs Pitou feeling like a pretty stupid fight. I wouldn't say it's a cop out in the sense of "Gon shouldn't be this strong", since the ability to do that is more or less established within the Nen system. I more think it's a copout in the sense of "these power level spikes are just dumb and not interesting to watch".

Alluka fucking sucks though. Most likely one of my least favorite characters from any anime, though I did grow a bit less upset when I was told that her character ties into things that happen later on in the manga after the anime ends.

That's pretty much how I feel about FMP. I barely made it through the first season and never really even started The Second Raid, but I thought Fumoffu was pretty great.

I was actually kind of bored by the show at first, but it really grew on me over time. Some combination of adjusting to the slow pace and coming to understand the characters overtime, or something.

Ok I thought the ending to this show was all different kinds of bad, but there were ten episodes of great anime there, at least.

After sleeping on this, actually what the fuck?

(FYI there is pretty much no filter on this post, so if you really liked the end of this show you may just want to ignore this.) The entire point of Violet's character was supposed to be about moving on from her past as a soldier and from her attachment to the major, and starting a new life. And of course what better way to show that than by making the final arc about the war almost coming back and Violet having to stop it??? And then there's all this drama with the major's brother and with Violet wanting to solve things without killing (to the point that she'll nearly jump off a train to protect a solider trying to kill her), which is about as unbelievable as it is stupid. And then at the very end maybe the major might be still alive because why not? I didn't really care about all that character development anyway. (/s) Fuck this.

Finished Bloom Into You. Absolutely fantastic show. I've been a fan of yuri for a while now, but this completely blows away any other yuri series I've watched, and most standard romance anime on top of that.

My one hope for this series is that nobody passes it up just because it's a yuri show. Well...if you dislike yuri on principle, then avoiding the show is probably a good idea. But, I say that because I think it avoids a lot of the issues that have been in other yuri series I've watched. It portrays a romantic relationship that is both tangible (ie. not undertones) and believable, while avoiding the soap opera melodrama and the fanservice-y elements you might find in a show like Citrus, for example. It is just a down-to-earth romantic drama about the interactions of believably flawed characters as they try to find fulfillment. The writing is consistently strong enough to make that type of story fun and engaging, and the music and directing in the series are top notch.

Not that I haven't said this before, but I really loved this show.

To say something about the ending point: Of course this is a reasonable but not ideal place to end the series, and I really hope the anime gets a season 2 someday. I wasn't really bothered by the lack of a real ending though, especially when the journey is as good as it is. I will say though that I've known for a while from reading Reddit threads that the show was never going to go through enough of the manga to even reach the cultural festival. So, I've been approaching this anime as part of a whole rather than as a self-contained story for the most part. People with different expectations may end up disappointed though

In a way I'm fortunate I don't have ties with my blood relations, because I'm certain I'd be getting side-eyed by now for being... me. I've grown relatively comfortable with the fact that when I'm 41, and when I'm 51, there's a decent chance I won't have changed much in many if these regards.

I can somewhat empathize with this even though my situation isn't really the same. What I mean though is the sense that like, everyone else in my family more or less leads "normal" lives. Whereas I'm pretty much content just keeping to myself and barely getting by while occupying myself with my hobbies, etc. I'm pretty sure I'm the "weird cousin" that everyone in the family talks about and doesn't really care to interact with, though I could be wrong. And if I'm wrong it's not because I don't fit the stereotype but more likely because it doesn't bother my family that I do

Hobby-wise I've mostly watched a ton of anime that I'm not going to bother to list in here. (I will be talking about some of them in the B8 AotY topic whenever the results thread goes up, though!)

I've also gotten back into competitive Smash with the release of the new Smash Ultimate which is great both multi- and single player, so that's neat.

I'll also throw a passing shoutout to the Utawarerumono series of games/VN's (really closer to VN's, though they are technically tactics RPG's) in the hope that someone will actually play them. I played them over the summer and they are really good.

Finished Bunny Girl Senpai. Pretty good show, though I probably liked it a bit less than other people here based on comments in this thread. There some arcs that were noticeably weaker than others, though even the weak arcs were still pretty good, at least. I do agree on the last arc feeling somewhat rushed at the end. Also almost all the stuff with Mai in the final episode was kinda dumb, though it didn't affect the overall experience much.

Arc ranking: Futaba > Mai > Kaede > Koga > Nodoka

In other news, Violet Evergarden continues to be outstanding as of episode 6. While I'd still probably say the 1st episode was the strongest so far, I've enjoyed the whole thing a lot. I love the setting; the show looks great; and it has a really stellar soundtrack. I also really like the general narrative structure, with how the show is effectively telling (rather engaging) stories mostly about other people, but still also manages to show us how the experiences make Violet grow as a person. I also think the narrative trick of frequently framing the show through other characters narrating their perceptions of Violet is pretty cool. If I were to complain about anything, it would be that the drama can sometimes feel a bit heavy-handed. That's really a minor complaint though, as I feel the story justifies it for the most part.

Great episode of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Sad I have to wait a week for the next one now.

I do like that this episode went a decent way towards redeeming Gabiru. He's pretty much been a joke so far, but here it at least shows a reasonably competent and noble leader, even if severely misguided.

I also like how good guy Rimuru just immediately agrees to help the lizardmen no matter how the situation develops.

The whole battle scene was great of course, and it especially drives home how OP everyone in this village is. (Well we already knew Rimuru was OP, but it seems like at least the important characters in the village are all leagues above ordinary grunt soldiers on their own)

I absolutely hated Kara no Kyoukai movie 8 yeah.

I might post more later, but my ranking is 5 > 7 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 6 >>>>> 8. Never saw 9 and 10 yet, though they are on my list.

I will say, I think 7 has by far the best individual scenes in the series. Everything involving Shiki/Kokutou is fantastic. However I just didn't think a lot of the thematic content of that movie really held up under scrutiny, which puts it under 5.

5 was probably my favorite Kara no Kyoukai movie. It does a lot of stuff I like. The presentation style is really neat but I also think the story itself is probably the best of the movies.

Also I think there's some pretty key differences between Kara no Kyoukai and the Fate series, if that's what you mean. Fate is a lot more action focused, is more direct in its storytelling, and is also more...idealistic, if that makes sense.

Also I said pretty much exactly the same thing in the anime topic already, but Yuki Kaijiura is fantastic. (I recently "rewatched" the Kara no Kyoukai movies and was talking about it there, though it was really only a rewatch for movies 1-6.)

This actually something I really like about Persona 3. I think it works well with the themes of the game.

SAO Alicization going in a bit of a weird direction with the two most recent episodes. It's not really that it's done anything bad yet, but more like it's raising a ton of red flags. Don't think I'm totally on board as of now.

In particular, I don't think that an insane AI who has given themself admin privileges makes for a particularly compelling villain, at least as a kneejerk reaction. Seems like we're moving a bit too far into the sci-fi aspects and away from the fantasy ones. I'm also not sure this totally works with the themes of AI's refusing to break the rules or whatever, but we'll see I guess. Also the fact that they introduced this crazy AI in nearly the same episode as they introduced robotic bodies to house AI's in the real world is a bit...suggestive that the plot is going in a direction I won't care for. Hopefully I'm either wrong or the execution is better than I'm anticipating though.

Also on a (hopefully) unrelated note, I already know I'm going to hate whoever those shady looking guys are that Asuna ran into.

Also I'm really going to miss the two cute kouhai who have most likely been written out of the story :(

Edit: Though, I guess SAO has never had really compelling villains and has still sometimes been good anyway. Maybe I'm overreacting here.

Kara no Kyoukai is pretty neat.

It's something a lot of people like to tout as "greatest anime of all time". I don't really feel that way about it, but most of the movies are very good.

I will say I strongly disagree with the way the story is presented in terms of the order of events. In particular I've found that the first movie is much much better on rewatch when you already know what's going on. (For the record I side with the "broadcast order" side of the Haruhi debate, so I'm not opposed to this type of story structure on principle. I just don't think it works at all in this case.)

I'm not quite going to call this the best romance anime, but I do think this is probably the best depiction of romance in an anime that I can recall, if that makes sense?

By the way how are we determining who qualifies as a side character? Are we just using best judgment? We could also go by however MAL classifies them, but I have no idea how accurate that would actually be. (Initial glance suggests not very accurate)

Specifically I want to know if Sayaka from Bloom Into You counts as a supporting character because that will make my vote incredibly easy in this category.

...But then again there's also Maeda from Asobi. Oh god this is going to be harder than I thought.
