The comparison is more because they came out around the same time and were both really popular. I don't think they're actually all that similar of movies though.

Overall I don't think it's amazing, but I'd still say I liked it well enough. Most people like it more than I did also.

If it's like Trails I wouldn't force yourself to try and keep up with all of them. Unless you want to of course--it's a major reason why a lot of people like their games.

But basically in the Trails series every NPC has substantial dialogue that updates every or nearly every time you do something to advance the plot. There's a subset of fans who will tell you to talk to every NPC whenever that happens, but personally I find it's really easy to get burned out trying to do that religiously. (Although I do encourage talking to NPC's frequently at least)

I have no idea how much if any of that is applicable to Tokyo Xanadu, but I'll let someone else who's played both series comment if there's any major differences between the two in this regard.

Oh another thing to say is that I am definitely a believer in focusing on the good in things, and no matter what else I say, I do think there are a lot of good things about Umineko. Part of me feels it's a shame I'm letting that go to waste.

Yeah it's not even too long into episode 3 that the logic battles become more structured and coherent.

I got reasonably far into episode 3 I think, and my problems were more apparent there then in episode 2. Not sure how reliable that statement is though since it might just be a case of the straw that broke the camel's back.

Well there's a part of me that wants to believe in the latter half of the story it turns into something I'm more okay with.

I'm not opposed to the idea of having a meta-world in principle--I just don't like how it's main use thus far in the plot was--from my perspective--just to have overly cheesy and poorly thought out logic battles.

The best part of episode 1 was no meta Beatrice/Battler. To first order if those scenes come out Umineko becomes an 8/10 or 9/10 visual novel rather than...well whatever you want to call my current love/hate relationship with Umineko.

Of the 2.5 episodes of Umineko I read, episode 1 was my favorite overall. Though I will say the beginning of episode 2 was easily my favorite segment that I did read.

Someday I will actually reread Umineko now that I know what to expect going into it.

Where do I even begin.

--Give the player any degree of interactivity with the world and/or any reason to care about it.

--Like seriously man give me a fucking town or an NPC or something jesus.

--Change the villain's plan so that it makes sense, and make it so that "the good guys cooperate completely but then they believe in themselves really hard" is not an effective countermeasure to their plan. (If I've missed something here feel free to point it out)

--Change the equipment system.

--Re-design late game encounters so that it's not just 3-5 minutes of button mashing while waiting either for their health bar to dwindle down or their stagger gauge to fill up.

And actually that's probably it. Surprised I didn't have more to complain about.

Higurashi's anime was a lot less faithful to the source material than Umineko's, which was a good thing.

Yeah that was my suspicion in this case to be clear. (Not in the sense that it would improve on the source material, but in the sense that it would be the most likely way to result in a good anime)

I feel if they go an adaptation that tries to capture exactly the same feeling it's going to fall flat, so changing it up to something more fitting to the anime medium is probably a good call.

Well...no arguments there.

Higurashi is just extremely difficult I think because of the reasons where it's appeal (for me at least) comes from. Mainly, the writing itself is really good, and I think the way it uses internal narration to develop the characters' mindsets and contrast them with the rest of the world is just really hard to maintain when moving away from a primarily text-based medium.

For Umineko on the other hand, my gut reaction is to the say that the very format of the story itself might be literally impossible to adapt successfully into an anime form.

If you end up reading it I'm curious what your thoughts are on the visual novel as compared to the anime. I've only read the visual novel but have thus far been of the belief that the story is nearly fundamentally impossible to adapt into an anime in a way that is both successful and faithful.

Smash 4 and it isn't even close, though in fairness I wouldn't say the competition is that strong. (I wouldn't consider myself "part of the community" even for most games that I like.) Second best is probably Trails which is all right, but there's some parts of even that community that I really don't like.

For the record I am not counting board 8 as a gaming community for the purposes of this question.

It also happens on Cold Steel but it didn't bother me as much. It feels slightly more organic with the way the story plays out which definitely helps. Also it seemed like it took less time to return to a mostly normal state.

Well Anelace herself isn't the problem to be fair. There's just something about the whole setup that feels wrong though from a story/immersion standpoint. The gameplay downgrade due to losing all your party members and items from the end of FC is also extremely noticeable here.

If you're saying based on how well the songs will do I think the best bet is Phantasmagoria, and then like Genuine Devil or something? Beard the Lion in his Den? Or maybe Looking Up at the Sky since it seems "generic anime credits theme" does pretty well on B8, although I'm guessing you don't like that song so it probably doesn't matter.

I actually rather like Banquet of Frenzy myself, but for whatever reason it doesn't sound to me like something that would be widely popular.

Personally my Trails The 3rd noms are most likely going to be used on dumb stuff that only I care about though, so don't listen to me.

I unironically believe that the Kirito/Asuna relationship is a pretty good romance! Also there are some pretty tense action sequences that are fun to watch especially in the latter half of the first arc.

Also GGO and Mother's Rosario are both great plot arcs and are generally an improvement on the first season. (Well, aside from the stuff at the very end of GGO because uh yeah.)
