This is pretty good

Wow I love everything about this card. The 1-mana mode is also potentially relevant for like Orzhov Magecraft, if that ever becomes a thing. (Obviously you're not running this in your deck intending to cast the 1-mana mode since there's 1 mana spells that actually do something, but yeah)

It's 7 as far as I know--it's printed differently than Kicker even though it's functionally the same. I'm also a bit scared of the 3 mana version. It's a bit too risky on it's own, but the potential to play to do some really silly plays with--say--Goldspan Dragon seems good when it can still function as just Alrund's Epiphany without the birds if you aren't able to take the risk. You can also counter the lose the game effect with Overcharged Amalgam, though I'm not sure if there's a situation where that's actually meaningful or if it's just cute.

Not sure if this ever gets played over Alrund's Epiphany and it definitely can't be abused in the same way the current Izzet Turns lists are, but it still makes me nervous regardless.

Also yes the timing is is very bad.

Yeah I think Magic would be worse if it made that change retroactively, though that isn't because I think it's a better or worse system.

The land was the same color as the card itself, so if you played a green card as a land it would give green mana. Multicolored cards could give mana of any color on the card but also entered tapped. Running multiple colors was a bit easier and I'd say 3 colors was pretty much the norm, though it wasn't totally free.

What the games I referred to above do (or did...) is basically that every card in the game can be played as a land, as if it were an MDFC with a land on the back side. It prevents the issue of not drawing lands entirely and also leads to some pretty interesting decisions you have to make in the early turns of the game which are often boring in MTG. There's still a reasonable amount of variance in terms of what cards you draw and whether you get a good curve. (Also another mechanic specific to those games adds quite a bit which probably isn't worth getting into)

I think there's an MTG variant with this rule which I don't really like, but it felt better in Duelmasters and Kaijudo because the games were designed with this in mind.

I don't know. I know what you mean but I just view the game differently. If I lose to someone playing their "win the game" sorcery on turn 8 I generally feel like the game was an enjoyable fight and there's things that could have gone differently, etc. Losing to a mono-green deck that just draws must-answer threats which are impossible to interact with profitably at every step of its curve is just demoralizing and frustrating.

Honestly I get more annoyed at Esika's Chariot. I don't mind when your 7 mana spell wins you the game but I do mind when your 4 mana spell wins you the game.

This is obviously a stupid and reductive argument from the standpoint of metagame balance/ban decisions/etc but in terms of my own playing experience this is how I see things.

TIL that if you cast Alrund's Epiphany 4 times in a row it gives you exactly enough birds to swing for 20 damage by the final extra turn even if you have nothing else going on.

Honestly I would tread carefully. I'm quite skeptical of the Grixis list, and even if they end up proving me wrong it still seems like it's geared towards a very narrow meta.

Expecting the mono-green players to clean house in this event. I suspect it's possible to tune Epiphany decks towards that matchup but I don't think any of these lists are it. Dark horse pick goes to the Azorius deck which is hard for me to evaluate until I see it in action I think.

I've been copying Alrund's Epiphany in standard because why just settle for one extra turn when you can take all of them. I do think the deck as it currently exists loses to mono-green but it feels quite strong vs everything else.

I've been testing out a mostly blue/black version of the deck but it's hard to say yet if it's better or worse. I'm convinced there's some way to crack this deck so that it destroys everything though and that it's just a matter of time until someone finds it.

Honestly I think Izzet Dragons is my pick among stuff that's been tried so far, though the format also feels very unsolved to me. (From a strength standpoint...I don't really like piloting the deck much)

If you want something completely different I think Dimir or Esper Control might be ok? Gabriel Nassif had this build linked below which looked interesting, and there's also the treasure focused builds that were run a lot in the Standard 2022 queue before Innistrad released. (Those were generally black/white only but I really do think you want to be running counters right now if you aren't trying to go under the other decks...)

I think in competitive Standard your deck wants to be doing at least one and ideally multiple of the following things right now:

(1) Playing Esika's Chariot

(2) Playing Goldspan Dragon

(3) Preventing your opponent from doing (1) or (2)

Had an absolutely nuts draft in Strixhaven Quick Draft today. Went 7-1 with most of my wins being a cakewalk and my only loss being due to mana screw.

Wish I could say it was skill, but turns out it's pretty hard to go wrong when you get dealt P1P1 Velomachus Lorehold into P2P1 Lightning Helix into P3P1 Lorehold Command >.>

I haven't been able to do drafts myself yet since I'm short on gold/gems, but this set looks really cool for both limited and constructed tbh.

I have still been playing constructed Historic and I can say that Izzet Phoenix unsurprisingly likes the addition of Consider a lot. In a bit of a "wait and see" mode for standard right now but there are a number of decks I'm interested in seeing if they work. Most notably I want to try some tempo shell with Delver, Smoldering Egg, and whatever the Looter il-Kor werewolf is called.

Anyone playing Historic lately? I'm trying to decide what to play for the Arena Open this weekend. I think I'm currently torn between Jeskai Control and Mono-white Humans. Jeskai is probably the safe bet, but Mono-white got some really good new tools recently in Esper Sentinel, Thalia's Lieutenant, and Ranger Captain of Eos. I think mono white does quite well vs matchups like Jeskai, but I'm less sure how it fares against the rest of the field.

Ended up not going with Jeskai and not doing that well (2-3). Not sure I'd have had any better chances with mono white though. I did end up facing someone who was obviously just building purely anti-control with stuff like multiple Chandra, Awakened Inferno and Shifting Ceratops in a best-of-1 deck, but I also played 1 or 2 matches against decktypes that I found in testing that mono white really struggled with. (tribal or midrange decks with big creatures)

Oh well, probably going back to Izzet in this format especially now that we're getting Consider and Play With Fire in the Innistrad set.

I am so bad at evaluating draft decks sometimes it feels like.

"This deck seems pretty good" -- 0-3
"Sure it can do things but it seems like it's missing something" -- 7-2
"Yeah this seems great" -- 3-3
"Eh it's fine I guess" -- Currently at 5-0 in convincing fashion

In other news I've recently realized that you can cast Ephemerate on an evoked Mulldrifter to draw 4 cards and keep the Mulldrifter. This seems good.

I don't think ramp as a general strategy is going anywhere. The treasure package used in Gruul and Naya is very close to being (and might actually be?) the strongest ramp in 2021 standard and all of those cards are sticking around after the rotation.

This doesn't help with Simic specifically unless you have enough creatures to effectively utilize Jaspera Sentinel, but yeah.

CGB has a list in a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TqqQEfC2Z0) that shows a few options he's using for standard 2022. I suspect Vastwood Surge is probably also playable, especially if you're trying to ramp into a 7 drop as your payoff.

I really liked this Standard for awhile--like back during Zendikar Rising and Kaldheim I was having a lot of fun with the format. Eldraine is really strong but the cards are also really fun to play with in my opinion. Adventure is probably one of my favorite mechanics ever. (To clarify, I am specifically referring to the period after the banning of Oko, Lucky Clover, etc...)

The final straw was probably the cracking of the Winota deck during the most recent set, but in retrospect I think Elite Spellbinder might be the card that did the most to ruin the player experience, at least for me. It's just not a fun card to play with from either side, and it goes a long way in discouraging interactivity and encouraging decks that just try to goldfish the opponent. (I don't know if this is exactly the right usage of that term but hopefully it's clear what I mean >.>)

I did one Kaladesh draft. Had what seemed like a bad deck but got lucky and went 3-3. Got a Sram which means one less wildcard I need to spend if I ever want to play Auras in Historic so I guess that's good.

Don't really like the format though. Vehicles are an awful mechanic that should never have been a thing and should never be a thing again.

Actually if you want fun, the Bant Party deck looks quite fun and also is maybe a high tier deck in the format right now. I haven't played or looked at the format much myself but Huey Jensen has it at 3rd in his power rankings.

This is the list I found on Channel Fireball https://mtga.untapped.gg/meta/decks/898/bant-party/AAQAAQPG1xrNBRAC4tYatQYD0NsaRIcBC8nVGpABJcEFUIS2AhpQrwEjoKcBAAA

Edit: Also yes, "wait until innistrad" has been my personal approach to the format. Though being in a waiting mode for both constructed formats on Arena is a bit frustrating. (Brawl does not count and is dumb)

Played in the Mythic Qualifier Weekend event today. Made a last minute decision to run Naya Winota despite literally never having played the deck before. Partially this was because some recent tournament results made me expect a lot of Gruul decks which I think do poorly against Winota, but also because I just really was not in a mood to have to think about my plays today. Ended up going 6-3 which doesn't qualify me for day 2 but does guarantee my entry into the next qualifier weekend event, which I guess is relatively good considering I was basically just phoning it in today anyways.

The big ones for me are The House in Fata Morgana and Trails in the Sky.

Fata Morgana I played only a week or 2 after it first released in English mostly on a whim based on a tweet one of the translators put out. The only reason I'd even heard of it at all was because I was following the localization company for updates on Higurashi, and I was mostly familiar with the VN community and what VN's were supposed to be good, translated or not.

Trails in the Sky I knew had a few vocal fans but there's tons of RPG's that applies to and I wasn't really approaching the series with any significant expectations.

Ok I lied Last Call is really cool, at least in context anyway.

Also generally agree that Rindo's mistrust mainly stems from things like indecision and pessimism. I'd say whereas Neku's fundamental character flaw was a deep seated mistrust and refusal to open up to others, with Rindo it's more like a fear of change and a refusal to risk upsetting the status quo.
