This year was somewhat weak for OP's and ED's imo, but here's a few from shows I watched that really stood out to me.

Bloom Into You (I wasn't able to find a Youtube video with visuals for this one unfortunately. The visuals are amazing and probably a bigger deal to me than the song itself. I don't know if HiDive has episodes available for free to non-subscribers but I'd encourage trying to go there or something to see the OP.)

I know in my Hard playthrough there was one fight that I effectively ended up doing with a 2-person party of MC and Yukari, because I was able to sustain a party of 2 that both resisted the boss's magic nuke of choice, but nobody beyond that. I'm guessing that was this fight, especially since the fact that it was Yukari suggests this was a Wind using boss.

(I probably actually took the full party but then never bothered reviving the others, unless maybe that confused Yukari's AI.)

I've also seen the claim that ZLS is a satire of an idol anime and not an idol anime played straight, which I think is just straight up wrong. I don't think any of that was on this board though.

At least not after episode 5 or so, because earlier on in the show the "satire" take was actually a legitimate one.

I definitely liked the first 2 episodes of Zombieland Saga a lot more than anything that came after it, for similar reasons to what you say.

Also I don't think anyone was actually trying to claim it straight up wasn't an idol anime. I think there might have been people saying things like "it's a unique idol anime" or "it's not just an idol anime", but yeah. (I'm not really sure though and I'm not exactly itching to reread that discussion to confirm either way)

Did anyone watch Dragon Pilot? I thought it looked really cool but I don't know if I'll be able to watch both that and Violet Evergarden before the deadline.

Sorry I said gear checks because that's what people call it in other contexts, but here it really means "level check" more than "gear check", I think.

I don't remember specific fights, but in general I would say try to find a Persona that nullifies/resists Wind, which I'm guessing is likely possible. I'd also advise using Tarunda if you haven't been, since I think it's pretty important in this game.

Or it may be that you just have to grind. I will say that this is one of the few RPG's where I've gone out of my way to level my characters. (Though, this might be more because the way I often approach Tartarus is to avoid fights as much as possible and blitz to the next checkpoint, which generally means I have less encounters/EXP than I'm "supposed" to have by a particular floor.)

A lot of the Tartarus bosses function as basically gear checks which is kind of frustrating. The actual story bosses are much better from a game design standpoint imo.

It's also not uncommon that for the Tartarus bosses I would just approach the first fight as a sort of trial run. Obviously I'd try and win, but a non-negligible portion of the time it's like "Well I brought this Persona weak to Fire and he started out using 3 fire spells in a row and wiped me. Woops. Guess we don't bring that Persona next time."

I feel like the deadline should be a bit later though. I know at least 1 show I'm watching finishes on the 28th, and I'd rather have more than just 1 day to both watch the final episode and decide how it changes my views of the show as whole.

It just occurred to me that last year I voted MHA season 2 as the #2 spot in AotY, but this year season 3 is just simply not even in the running at all despite being significantly better in my opinion.

This year has been really good for anime.

P3 has some of the best social links but also some of the worst ones. Overall I don't think I like them significantly less than P5, and I like them a bit more than P4 actually.

Kenji is one of the bad ones though, yes.

Finished Devilman: Crybaby.

I don't feel like making a particularly long post about this right now, but the short version is this. Overall I really liked the show. Characters, presentation, and focus on the thematic content of the story were all top-notch. However I think the back half of the show would have really benefited from getting an additional episode or two in order to better portray how exactly we got from the state at the beginning of the show to the tragic ending that we had. It feels like things started happening a bit too quickly once demons became public knowledge in episode 6 or whenever it was.

Also The Journey is on its own a fully complete story. I've still never played The Answer despite P3 being one of my favorite games of all time, and I don't feel I've missed out on anything. (Though it's likely a reasonably good experience)

Anyway yeah I liked Psycho Pass. The entire finale was fantastic imo.

I did like Makishima overall, but mostly from a more aesthetic standpoint. I like having his type of villain a lot in these types of stories, but I also think Makishima himself could have been written a bit better.

I remember in particular one of the early fights on Hard (I think this one--I know it used electric attacks) the only way I was able to beat it was by stacking evade and praying that I got lucky with dodging. Ended up taking me a bit of extra grinding and still numerous tries on top of that to get a battle where the RNG was really in my favor.

Man Devilman Crybaby is so good. I think the last time a show impressed me in quite this way was...probably Madoka? I don't know.

Assuming it doesn't drop the ball in the second half, this would have been AotY in most other years (for sure last year). But this year...I don't know. I don't think this is going to top Sora Yori. And Bloom Into You is also really good.

Side note: You could make a video clip that has nothing except for the rap scenes from Devilman and it would still have more artistic merit than like 80% of anime or something like that.

For the record, where I'm coming from here is that to first order every show ever made has some comedy in it, and so it only makes sense to me to describe a show as a comedy if being funny is a primary aim of the show.

Yes, I can agree with this.

I use "comedy" to refer exclusively to shows in the former category and sometimes to shows that might better be described as a romantic comedy depending on how important the comedic aspects are.

"Comedy" must mean something completely different to me than it does to other people.

Which maybe isn't surprising because I remember objecting to people describing Tada Never Falls in Love as a comedy earlier in the year. (In fairness, I probably would now say that is an accurate description in this case...)

For the record I agree with this and still object to ZLS being described as a comedy. I think it's a fundamentally inaccurate description of the show.

This is different Bane. I'm not saying it's not funny (though as of episode 2, it's not)--I'm saying it's not trying to be a comedy.

Prof--the simple answer is that there are plenty of shows that are not comedies which have individual segments that are funny.

For Zombieland Saga, I don't think the show is about Kotarou at all. Kotarou is obviously a comedic character but that's not enough to make me consider the show as a whole a comedy. I think the show is about the 7 girls and about them finding fulfillment through their singing or their friendship or whatever. I'm not 100% sure what genre I'd label it as. It's closer to drama than comedy, but drama probably isn't quite right either.

I've not watched shows for far stupider reasons than having idols. (Which is really not that stupid at all! Not watching a show that's in a genre you don't like is a pretty reasonable stance!)

For example I never watched Hibike Euphonium because I think the euphonium is a stupid instrument, which probably doesn't matter in the slightest to the show itself.

I don't like idol anime because all of the ones that I've seen* are way too infectiously happy to a degree that comes off as cheesy, and also because they waste tons of screentime to bad music videos for a genre of music I don't particularly like.

*I have only seen like 3 idol anime so....yeah.

I actually might agree with this is the funny thing. Mappa is a studio I feel like I should enjoy a lot, but for some reason everything I've ever watched by them has fallen short in one way or another for me.

Except In This Corner of the World, which was great, but I'm not counting movies here.

Though to be fair I actually overall liked Hinamatsuri. I wouldn't say it was great, but I'm also not entirely sure why I never got around to finishing it. It was certainly better than a fair number of shows I have finished.
