If Rogan were on every podcast service it'd be a different conversation. By Spotify spending that much and using Rogan as the center piece of marketing their podcast service, they're endorsing what he's saying, whether they admit it or now. Tidal from what I understand pays artists better than the other services. A lot of artists had shares in the company at the beginning so that was a big part of the mission. When Apple released lossless at no extra charge over normal, Tidal changed up their payment structure... before it was $10 a month for MP3 quality, $20 for lossless, now $10 gets you lossless but paying $20 gives you stuff like mqa and spatial audio and gives a portion of your sub fee to your most listened to artist that month. But yeah to me the biggest selling point to Tidal is the sound quality. Tidal was early to the game with lossless (huge improvement if you have decent wired headphones or speakers) then Amazon and Apple started offering it, and Deezer and Qobuz have gotten a bigger following which were more niche services. So now Spotify is basically the odd one out without it. I pay $15 for family plan (cut from $30) which gives 6 accounts. So a few family and friends will venmo me $36 for the year for their individual account. Absolute steal. | daftpunk_mk5 02/09/22 8:24:12 AM #1 | I like Joe Rogan overall. I do think it's total bullshit that people got more outraged at him saying the N word before than at the anti vax propoganda. But that being said I hate Spotify and am glad they're taking so much shit for this. They're terrible for artists, they completely failed to deliver on a Hifi streaming tier (I use Tidal and have been waiting for something to switch to with google home support), and exclusivity agreements are terrible for the industry. Spotify's stance is that they don't want to silence him which as a liberterian I normally would stand by 100% except for the fact that: 1. they already have censored him by taking down 100+ episodes, and 2: they paid $100 million dollars for exclusivity. You can't play the neutral platform card when you're paying someone to make content for only you. So overall it's a good thing this is all happening and in such a high profile case cause this'll nip platform exclusives in the bud... we could have easily headed to a reality where you need, say, spotify for rogan, iheart for freakonomics, apple podcasts for this american life, etc. Would have been a reflection of what happened with TV streaming services and what EGS was trying to do to PC games.
