X-2 has two issues imo

A) The sheer amount of missables is fuckin stupid. The game is pain to 100% and really demands a walkthrough. Shit's bad yo

B) The music is trash outside 1000 Words and a couple other tracks. FFX baseline had a very spotty soundtrack (the major tracks are great! And then it has a loooooot of chaff), but X-2 is just, completely substandard for what FF delivers normally. It really makes it show its B-team sequel colors which is a crying shame. Really tanks the experience for me. :(

I first played 5 on the PS1, lag and all. Loved it. The plot just isnt there tho.

12 is amazing. I still think it has the best optional content of the games I played in the entire series, but 15 comes close.

play 5 again, ulti. there's more there than you remember, I think.

the best thing about 12 are definitely the hunts. Zodiac Age makes this game playable and actually somewhat enjoyable thanks to the 2x speed. the original deserves a 5/10 at most, while ZA is conceivably an 8/10 (imo of course)

FFXII's battles are not good. This was pre-Xenoblade and they hadn't figured out how to do the "offline single-party MMO" thing yet. Everything is painfully slow, and the most effective strategy for 98% of the battles is to just regular attack and heal <10%.

The story actually has a lot going for it. I think "FF as Star Wars" was actually a great way to go. They just decided to tell it almost entirely through cutscenes, which was ambitious but also means there's a lot that gets left out. And then development hell happens and Matsuno gets ousted.

Vahn does suck, but all of the cast suffer because of how little story there is. There's a lot of plot but not story, if that makes sense.

Whether or not you use a poll, "most memorable death" is always going to be somewhat subjective so that whole argument is not provable.

The initial argument was about "FFV not having a plot" which is completely wrong. This is just the perception since so few people in the U.S. played it on release.

The main party of FFV has got a braindead himbo protag, a tomboy princess, a female pirate, and an old man who is initially comic relief but is actually (spoilers). It also features the most relevant chocobo in the series. There's a sky library and steampunk stuff. It's got a big bad and an assistant bad who goes on to become FF royalty (Gilgamesh). It's got a big twist in the middle.

The plot isn't top tier but it's also a huge step above I and III. I'd probably put it over II, XV, and XIII. It's maybe better than XII, just because XII's story is told really poorly.

FFV definitely has a plot. It's so good that Tales of Symphonia basically stole it years later!

but also this series isn't over. the kings are good on the road and the warriors are streaky. kings win game 6 they also win game 7.

Played a few hours so far. Pretty good! The "affinity points" system actually makes me want to explore the areas more, and this first area is a nice size to start off with.

A few long loading times for fast travel have scared me though. Thought the game crashed for a second.

Advance Wars Remake: At first I absolutely hated the new graphics. I guess the character art is growing on me but I don't know if I'll ever like the new units. I get that they're going for a tabletop miniatures /RISK feel but it still sucks. The gameplay is timeless and perfect as ever.

And Xenoblade 3 DLC.

story-wise, yes, it holds up (assuming you're down with working designs, which is a big ask for some)

in terms of gameplay, the battle system is an example of why turn-based combat gets a bad rap

This is on my list - too much stuff coming out though. Might get this around Halloween.

7 Remake pretty good but the complaints about the battle system are fair. If you were locked into Cloud I would probably think it was awful, but there's just enough strategy involved between switching characters / ATB management that I find it a fun if not brainless experience.

I definitely think Rebirth is going to go off the deep end in terms of new stuff/story changes though. It'll still feature the iconic scenes but it's just going to be surrounded by kruft.

I largely agree with this; if I try to think too hard about this game's connection to Xenoblade 1 it all falls apart

maybe the DLC will "fix" this? Or I'll choose to ignore it, more likely. I'm much more interested in seeing "XB3's version of Rex and Shulk" than trying to figure out when and how this falls after the events of XB1.

Fired 3 up last night to check the ending out again and refresh myself on the lore and I think I've come around to really like the story and found the ending to be amazing.

I think the story is wildly uneven, but at its high points it is near the pinnacle of cutscene-based storytelling. At its low points it's near Tales of Zestiria level. It's also a weird game that has a great beginning, a sharp drop off, an all-time great middle, and another sharp drop-off all the way to the ending itself, which is pretty good.

that being said, if they somehow get past the kings, they probably also get past lakers/grizz too. I feel like kings win the next two though.

KH3 is good but it's not the best in the series. Lukewarm take I know, but I have to push against the idea that it's the best one!

Ehhh, the characters kind of suck too. I agree that the road trip vibe is real done, but they're all cliches. Maybe the DLC fleshes them out but that begs the question of why they relegate the character development to behind a paywall. The best parts of this game are driving around listening to music from other videogames and the memes. That's not a good sign.

HP/MP refills I use whenever I want now, though I typically save permanent stat boosters until I hit a wall

I played FF2 as part of the GBA Dawn of Souls package and had a decent time. I appreciated that they were trying a bit harder on the story, and Firion and Minwu are cool designs for the era. But yeah it's obviously a mixed bag in terms of its systems.

honestly I've never carefully read any of the in-game books. except for that one that you need to in order to do the quest I understand there's some cool easter eggs in there but I find the writing to be extremely boring.

serious question: if a game is only on xbox and gamepass, why would you not just play it on gamepass? how do games make money/move units in a situation like this?

My ranking topic philosophy is to partly evaluate based on their release date competition.

So yeah, FF1 sucks now but also it was pretty cool when it came out so that should factor into it somewhat

Ah yes lets all buy tickets for all of our family and friends who live interstate or in another country. That's a lot more convenient for everyone involved especially if it is a large number of people.

I flew with my 3 year old daughter and 8 month old daughter a few weeks ago and it was completely fine. If you can't deal with it nobody is forcing you.

It most certainly does not have to be no. My toddler loves travelling and going places. Having a stable routine does not mean you can't do anything varied within that routine.

I'm happy for you and your kids.

I didn't say stay inside all day. I said don't fly if you don't have to. If family is far, fly them to where you are. Drive if they're close. Flying is complicated/stressful enough if I didn't have my child with me.

Also yes, I did just do the same thing every day for about the first three years of my kid's life. Occasional day trips, but pretty rigid routine otherwise. It's part of being a parent.
