As they walk, Lyra asks if Dawn wants to have Corey as her boyfriend. Seriously, I know Lyra is a girl, but that doesn’t mean her only personality trait must be “thinks about boys” - I’m pretty sure girls think about other stuff too, sometimes. I assume.

Thus, they split into Ash/Lyra and Dawn/Corey to look for it, Lyra thinking that Dawn and Corey make a cute couple. Seriously bro, get a new personality trait. Even something like “likes hats” would be okay.

Okay yeah, she sucks. I can't even joke about it anymore.

The heroes quickly find the Gible, and Ash instantly wants to catch it-- so Corey decides he must catch it instead. What a dick.

To be fair that's not the first time this has happened with one of Ash's travelling companions and it surely won't be the last. Remember that Togepi, Farfetch'd, and Totodile that Ash said he wanted first but Misty just had to have? How about that Buizel that Ash had his eyes on first that Dawn just knew would love contests even though its only trait demonstrated up to that point had been "loves to prove its strength through battling" nevermind the fact that she already had a Water type and Ash had none at the time. That worked out well, eh? So the point is you can't hate him for doing exactly what many others in the past have done without hating them too.

Gible greets them as they exit, so Corey insists on fighting it first. Gible and Totodile get into a rock crushing contest, and Gible wins, but the effort takes so much out of it that rather than fight, it just wants to escape. Corey’s not about let weakened prey escape from him, though, so he has Totodile knock it out and catches it.

Okay yeah, he sucks. I can't even defend him anymore.

I seriously dislike Lyra and Corey now. They’re legitimately annoying.

They're pretty bad. Still not the worst though!

Like if they'd given Lyra the exact same personality as Casey from waaaaay back, and replaced baseball with something else, she could have been fun for a few episodes. I mean that, she really could have. But they were so focused on having her show off important Gen II pokemon like Marill and Girafarig that she couldn't.

It would be cool if Ash traded his Gible to her, but she currently has nothing to give him for it.

We know Axew won't be evolving, so the best thing that could happen is for the Deino she befriended return, and catch it. And hopefully soon after it evolves into Zweilous. But I think that Deino had a trainer already...

The heroes have reached Lilypad Town, and we learn Dawn’s strategy is to have Mamoswine eat its own ice shard to power up, as Grotle and energy ball did. Cyndaquil races to Dawn and asks to enter a contest, but Dawn has already decided on Piplup and Mamoswine this time, giving it the extremely important position of cheerleader. So important is this job that she doesn’t bother having Pachirisu and Buneary join it.

Meanwhile, Jessie wants to enter the contest, but she's too sick to compete. Sounds like an excuse for more James crossdressing!

James crossdressing is seriously like the only joke that’s remained completely unchanged since season 1 other than “Team Rocket is incompetent lol.”

Dawn does well with Piplup in the derp round, and "Jessie" uses Meowth to cut up some noodles and serve soup to the judges. We get a flash to that one guy who tried to recruit Meowth as a noodle cook, crying at Meowth's success - good continuity there, bros, save that I can’t remember his name since he was a one-off character. By the way, Meowth talks on live TV and the heroes all see him talk and no one realizes that it's Team Rocket's Meowth. Round 2 involves Dawn, "Jessie," and six unnamed trainers. Dawn goes up against “Mario,” and while you’d think this would be a good excuse for a jokey cameo thing, nope, Mario is just some guy with a Granbull. Mamoswine’s ice shard strategy works so well that it accidentally knocks Granbull out with one attack, which disappoints Dawn because she wanted to show off more.

Next up is Dawn versus "Jessie" - Mamoswine versus Carnivine - but James actually planned ahead, and Carnvine steals the ice shard with vine whip and throws it back at Mamoswine’s face. Mamoswine gets so angry that it ignores Dawn's orders - with its random, blunt attacks, James is able to have Carnvine easily dodge every attack, winning with ridiculous ease. And there you have it, folks: confirmation that James is a better trainer than Jessie. We already kind of knew that, but there you go.

"Jessie" wins. Afterward, Mamoswine is upset because it failed so spectacularly, but Dawn tells it that it’s okay, and Lyra closes out the episode by saying "Whether you win or lose, you'll always have your friends." Then Professor Oak tells us not to do drugs, to stay in school, that quitters never win, to be yourself, and to always respect your parents, teachers, and local authority figures.

One thing I like about this episode is how it plays off "Noodles, Roamin' Off" in more ways than expected. Not just the continuity of Meowth's ability to make noodles, either.

When the team split up, Jessie decided to spend her time focusing on being a better Jessilina. In other words, she proved that she views it as a role separate from her job in Team Rocket. And since she views it as a role, it is thus something that anyone can play, including James.

But James decided to become a better trainer and went after the meanest Pokemon in the area. While shiny Metagross was more than a match for him, it's that reckless confidence he can exhibit that paid off in the end of this episode, as Carnivine's ability to fearlessly stand up to Mamoswine and throw it off its stronger game caused its rampage that cost Dawn the finals.

So in the end, while the breakup lasted less than the episode's length, everything they did in the meantime came back to win Jessie her next ribbon. Woohoo!

The heroes decide to visit the Lilypad Town ancient Roman coliseum, because... I can't even make a joke about this. Corey and Lyra are leaving with his father soon, so they challenge Ash and Dawn to one last tag battle in the coliseum. Anyway Team Rocket Piplup and Pikachu captured giant robot underground ten minutes of padding blasting off again.

The heroes go back to the coliseum and begin their tag battle. Monferno/Cyndaquil versus Totodile/Chikorita. Everyone tells Lyra that Chikorita is a terrible pokemon against two fire pokemon, but she decides that's wrong. The battle is so intense that Corey's Totodile evolves into Croconaw, but despite this, Cyndaquil defeats Chikotira and Monferno defeats Croconaw with the weirdest shot ever (the camera spins around Monferno's fist like three times as it punches Croconaw, it’s utterly bizarre).

The heroes go to the airport to see Lyra and Corey off, and Lyra asks Corey to come on a journey with her, which he of course agrees to. Corey’s dad gives the heroes a PokeGear, and the Johto people step onto their airship, hopefully to never be heard from again.

TRY FOR THE FAMILY STONE!

The heroes are lost in a forest when they see a Murkrow fly over their heads. Brock is worried: "You know what they say, something bad may happen when a Murkrow flies over your head late at night." Aside from the fact that it's clearly daytime, we've never heard this saying before and I assume we never will again.

They're attacked by a Giratina, but run away, but when they escape, a river suddenly appears and washes them away. Soon, a girl named Rihanna wakes them up and tells them that confuse ray put them to sleep and gave them nightmares, and that she would appreciate it if you did not stop the music. That Murkrow is Rihanna's brother's, Mitchell, pokemon. Mitchell used to lose battles to Rihanna a lot, so he disappeared one day and started training Murkrow and playing tricks on travellers. Rihanna hopes to find a dusk stone to evolve her Misdreavus, because she's heard that Mismagius can cast happiness spells to help Mitchell - and she herself is already happy because she likes the way you lie.

Rihanna and Brock go to find a dusk stone while Dawn and Ash find Mitchell and Murkrow. Dawn tells Mitchell about Rihanna's plan to make you make her feel like the only girl in the world and also to use her soon-to-be Mismagius to make him happy. Mitchell refuses to believe this, he only believes Rihanna wants a dusk stone to make her Misdreavus stronger and make it impossible for him to win their battles. He also explains that he isn't having Murkrow attack passersby - it got angry at him during training when and now won't listen to his orders.

Meanwhile, love may be hard to find in a hopeless place, but dusk stones are easy. Unfortunately, Team Rocket captures Misdreavus. Rihanna wants them to release it, so Brock sends out Sudowoodo to lose to a giant robot. Team Rocket tries to steal the dusk stone as well, but luckily, Ash, Dawn, and Mitchell show up, so Staraptor and Murkrow save Rihanna and Misdreavus before Pikachu blasts them off again. Well that was easy. Now that they have a stone and no one needs it, Rihanna and Mitchell decide to determine who gets it by having ten battles, which will presumably take place after the heroes depart, which they immediately do.

I would make more Rihanna jokes but those are the only ones I can think of offha-- oh damn, I missed an opportunity for a “chains and whips excite me” joke. Ah well.

The heroes go to the pokemon center in an unnamed town. Afterward, Piplup and Pikachu get into a fight (that is 100% Piplup's fault) before they suddenly, and passionately, embrace each other.

Naturally, the heroes are not amused.


Meanwhile, a few miles away, Professor Kodama is angry that his mysterious machine isn't working, which we know because, in his lab, a Magnemite and Quagsire in his lab hate each other. He’s also hired Team Rocket as his assistants.

Dawn tries recalling Piplup to its pokeball to break their embrace, but Piplup just breaks out. Eventually, Brock realizes that Pikachu and Piplup are behaving like magnets because they keep going back to each other if separated, so the solution is to pick them up and turn their backs to each other-- I... so this pretty much confirms why not dropping out after fourth grade is a good idea. I love how it completely fails and the heroes are legitimately flabbergasted.

They go to a pokemon center, and find that there are several electric/water pokemon couples here that can't be separated-- and even though Nurse Joy is theoretically the pokemon expert, it's Brock who realizes the pattern of water/electric.

Meanwhile, Kodama explains that he's built a machine to make pokemon friendlier with each other by using attract, digital signals, and an antenna. He's excited because, unlike attract, his machine works on pokemon of the same gender, which is "of truly historic proportions." So, yes. Yes. There is literally a character in the Pokemon universe who got his PhD so he could mind control animals into having gay sex. This is like… I don’t even know what this is like.

But the machine still isn’t affecting Magnemite and Quagsire, so Kodama increases the power of his machine in an attempt to make Quagsire and Magnemite like each other more, which does nothing to them, but at the pokemon center, all of the pokemon grow even closer.

Meanwhile, Quagsire crashes into the machine and turns it off, momentarily separating the pokemon in the center, but Kodama just turns it back on. Some of the trainers mention that their pokemon used to hate each other, which helps Brock make the leap that whoever is causing this must himself own pokemon that hate each other. This makes Nurse Joy remember Professor Kodama, who's "right behind the pokemon center" and "conducts lots of experiments with pokemon." Really - you didn't remember this until just now?

Kodama is excited to learn from the heroes that his machine works, but he still doesn’t know why it doesn’t affect Quagsire and Magnemite, who he mentions have hated each other for years. Team Rocket steals the machine and are about to escape when Quagsire and Magnemite save the day by breaking the machine and allowing Pikachu to blast Team Rocket off; Ash is confused as to why they no longer hate each other, and Brock realizes they were just having battle practice. For several years. In enclosed rooms. That never stopped. And involved little actual battling and mostly just gritting their teeth as they stared each other down. And a pokemon expert, Kodama, didn’t recognize the difference.

Brock also theorizes what stopped Quagsire and Magnemite from being affected: their secondary types.
