There's some speculation going around that Ash catches a shiny Onix, and Iris a Magnemite.

At this point, do we really need another Onix? Or a Magnemite? Ash already has Boldore for Rock and Krokorok/Palpitoad for Ground. And Iris already has Emolga for Electric...

I already ughed a little just from seeing there was going to be another Onix-centric episode. What a way to capitalize on all those great non-Unova Pokemon. >_>

PIPLUP, UP, AND AWAY!
"What's going on is certainly not you. When it comes to disguises, you haven't a clue!"
Score: 6.5/10

The heroes and Mariam are watching a meteor shower when one of the meteors starts hurtling toward them. Piplup, however, doesn't panic and easily destroys the object with its whirlpool. Suddenly they're in the grand festival, and Piplup's destruction of the meteor just won Dawn the grand prize-- but then Gible shows up and uses draco meteor to hit Piplup. Haha, not even in your dreams are you safe, Piplup.

In the morning, Ash decides to have some draco meteor training with Gible, and predictable results occur.
external image
After Gible hits Piplup with its most powerful attack at least five or six times, Piplup angrily attacks it in retribution, because revenge is the basis for all TV aimed at children. Piplup imagines Dawn and Ash chewing Gible out for hurting Piplup, but instead of this,
external image
Dawn just tells Gible that she knows it wasn't trying to be mean. This really hurts Piplup, and it walks off into a forest. It keeps imagining Dawn appearing and apologizing to it, but instead all it finds are an angry Rhyperior and a disguised Team Rocket. They claim to be from the Pokemon Rescue Corps, experts in helping put-upon pokemon with their trainers. Piplup explains its situation to them, so Jessie and James leave it with Meowth and find the heroes to chew them out. They invite the heroes to their training center, but insist on leaving their pokemon with them first. Well, with people this obviously trustworthy,
external image
How can the heroes refuse? Unfortunately, the Rhyperior attacks again, separating Team Rocket from the heroes. Pikachu also gets separated from the heroes, so Team Rocket asks Piplup to bring them Pikachu to also "help," and it of course does because it’s an idiot.

The heroes can't find Piplup and Pikachu, so Gible uses draco meteor in a random direction, knowing that it would land next to Piplup. The heroes follow it, but-- Rhyperior frees Piplup and Pikachu. Dawn is excited to see Piplup alright, finally acting exactly as she does in its dreams. Rhyperior explains to Meowth that it’s angry because its own trainer abandoned it. Team Rocket attacks the heroes, and while they initially do well, Piplup freaks out and learns hydro pump to defeat them.

Rhyperior is still angry and about to attack the heroes when a ten year-old appears and says Rhyperior is his, sorry for the trouble, goodbye. That’s not being unfair to the episode, that’s what happens.

Actually a pretty good episode with fun visuals up until the last minute.

How can you guys talk about that team photo of Ash's pokemon and not mention that his herd of Tauros aren't there. Maybe Pidgeot is hanging out with all of them.

The heroes can't find Piplup and Pikachu, so Gible uses draco meteor in a random direction, knowing that it would land next to Piplup.

Haha so the attack now officially goes after Piplup no matter what? That is going to be a problem if he ever uses it in a gym battle.

FLINT SPARKS THE FIRE!
"Glorp"
Score: 7/10

The heroes have finally reached Sunnyshore City, and it has airport-style walkways instead of sidewalks. Yes. Yes, somewhere in Japan is a man who both works on Pokemon and whose favorite episode of Seinfeld is the one where George suggests this very idea, and he ignores the part where the other characters explain all of the obvious reasons why it wouldn't work.

Ash has been told that Volkner is extremely strong, but that only makes him look forward to the battle more. The heroes march right up to the gym, and when a computerized voice asks Ash why he's standing in front of the door, he says he wants a battle. Next to the door opens a bucket of free badges, and the voice explains that in this gym, they skip the battles. Ash insists that you should only get a badge if you legitimately defeat the leader, and by the way, don't talk to Erika, Koga, Sabrina, Wattson, and possibly also Brock.

Ash pounds on the door, so giant robot hands appear to "escort you off the premises by force." Fortunately, who should arrive that moment but Flint and his Infernape, a member of the Elite Four (and Flint is pretty cool too). Flint frees him, and agrees to bring him to Volkner at the Sunnyshore Tower. Flint explains that Sunnyshore is powered with solar panels, and they're all controlled from this tower. They soon meet Volkner, who doesn't feel like a battle because he's completely lost interest in battling. Volkner just wants to stare out into the sky and walk through sliding doors, however, so the heroes and Flint go to a... tea and coffee shop, I think?

Flint and the bartender there tell the heroes about how awesome Volkner and he were as kids. They were constant rivals, and even defeated a pokemon poacher together, but when Flint became an Elite Four member, Volkner became bored by the gym challengers and instead focused on his solar panels. Volkner shows up at the tea shop, but he's still bored, so the bartender tells Flint to battle Ash in Volkner's place and Volkner to watch.

Cut to the gym, (Flint's) Infernape versus Buizel. I love how Ash actually has Buizel use ice punch here. Infernape defeats Buizel with one attack. Ash sends out his own Infernape, but it becomes instantly clear that Flint's Infernape is way stronger than Ash's, and it also defeats it with a single attack. Volkner considers leaving when the bartender insists he stays.

Ash sends out Pikachu. Unlike the others, Pikachu actually does land multiple attacks, and ridiculously survives a mach punch, two close combats, and a flare blitz when Infernape went down to a single mach punch. Still, Pikachu loses without having ever seriously put Infernape in danger of losing, and Ash grabs it in his arms, telling it he's proud of it. Volkner has a flashback to defeating the poacher with his own Pikachu at that age, and we learn that the bartender and the poacher are one and the same. Volkner’s spark for battling has be rekindled, so he agrees to battle Ash next episode.

THE FLEEING TOWER OF SUNNYSHORE!
"I'm fresh out of guts..."
Score: 6/10

We begin in the gym. Luxray versus Grotle. Luxray avoids Grotle's attacks and, despite having a type disadvantage, still does well before the power goes out, causing all of the lights (and robots that are clearly battery-powered) to go out. Officer Jenny appears and tells Volkner that the entire city's powergrid is out, so Volkner figures something must have gone wrong with the tower, since the solar panels are clearly alright.

Unfortunately, just before they get there, they find Team Rocket has attached huge wheels to the tower and begin to roll it away. Literally everyone except Jenny goes after the tower, which Team Rocket attaches to a huge rocket and use to take off. Ash, Volkner, and Flint make it onto the tower, but Dawn and Brock get left behind. Flint, however, falls off of the tower and into the ocean below. If you’re wondering why they bothered to have Flint reach the tower to begin with, it’s probably just for padding purposes. Ash and Volkner infiltrate the tower, but are soon trapped in a cage. Fortunately, Gible is kind enough to use rock smash, and Volkner thanks "Jible." I’m serious, he clearly says “Jible,” it’s really weird.

They attack Team Rocket, and when Pikachu and Raichu fail to defeat Seviper and Carnivine, Ash sends out Grotle. It easily stops them and then evolves despite being under no stress whatsoever, and its newfound leaf storm ability allows it to defeat Team Rocket easily and blast them off. Volkner quickly uses Team Rocket's rocket to land the tower in its original spot, because in addition to being an expert pokemon trainer, architect, and electrical grid designer, Volkner knows all about how to fly rockets the size of towers. Unfortunately, the tower has taken so much damage that Volkner needs to devote his time to fixing it, which means, you guessed it, yet more filler.

The heroes decide that they should probably get going, so they head out to the Grand Festival for Dawn to compete in.

TEACHING THE STUDENT TEACHER!
"I call this 'Flameice' 'cause it's a flame in ice."
Score: 4/10

The heroes meet Dawn's mom (Joanna) at a seaside town. Joanna travels to various towns and teaches classes about coordinating to small children, and it's lucky her schedule and the heroes' worked out. Unfortunately, at nearby Neighborly Town (…), the local Nurse Joy is too busy to judge a contest, so they need Joanna to take her place… instead of just calling for another Nurse Joy. Well, whatever, the end result is that the heroes teach her class for her.

The next morning, one of the kids, Thomas, is belligerant and demands proof the heroes know what they're doing, so Ash tells him that he's won seven badges, even though that is untrue, as he has won thirty-five badges. Thomas quickly proves to be a jerk, picking on Piplup constantly for no reason.

Dawn tries to impress the kids with her new Mamoswine/Pachirisu combination, Ice Chandalier, where Mamoswine traps Pachirisu in ice and Pachirisu uses discharge, but she just can’t get it to work. With Thomas’ insulting advice, she improves it by replacing Mamoswine with Buneary and ice beam, which results in Pachirisu creating a brilliant lightshow within the ice.

For some reason, this means Thomas and Piplup are friends now. Brock explains that Thomas liked Piplup from the start, but only knew how to show it by teasing it.

Meanwhile, at the contest, Jessie, as the only named character, easily wins, and we don’t even get to see Mr. Contesta or Mr. Sukizo.

At night, Joanna gives Dawn a new dress for the grand festival.

KEEPING IN TOP FORME!
"Shaymin."
Score: 4/10

The heroes are by a river in a forest when a sleeping goth loli in a boat drifts by. Brock, seeing a waterfall in her immediate future (seriously Japan, are you just made of waterfalls, forests, canyons, and endless deserts?), rescues her by pulling the boat onto land.

She wakes up, and quickly grabs a basket in the boat. She introduces herself as Marley. She tells the heroes that a group of "very bad people" are after her, and asks Brock to protect her and take her over a nearby mountain. She's heading to a "secret garden," but won't say more than that. For once, Ash doesn’t want to have anything to do with a character of the day, but Brock convinces him to take her along.

Despite Marley’s attempts at sneakiness, the heroes soon learn the basket contains an injured Shaymin, which Brock quickly heals. Marley explains her story: she was walking through this forest in her full goth loli costume (seriously, why?) when she happened upon a wild Shaymin. Team Rocket attacked, and after a few battles, she had to take the now-injured Shaymin and hide in the boat, where she accidentally fell asleep. I’m impressed. Not because she defeated and avoided Team Rocket, but because she was able to fall asleep in her costume, it looks ridiculously uncomfortable.
external image
Look at those boots. Just look at them, how does she even run?

The heroes reach the Gracadia Flower Garden, which has unfortunately lost all but one of its flowers, leaving Shaymin unable to transform. Luckily, the heroes locate a single flower left, but Team Rocket appears in a giant robot. Fortunately, Shaymin uses the flower to take its sky forme, and defeats Team Rocket, but exhausts so much energy that it’s forced back into land forme, and the battle destroyed the flowers. However, a few other wild Shaymin show up and cause another flower to bloom, allowing Shaymin to join them. It bids Marley farewell, and the episode ends as pointlessly as it began.

The only interesting part of this episode is Marley, who’s worth a point just on her own.

AN ELITE COVERUP!
"We'll evolve your pokemon here at Wobbuffet Daycare! With our famous no-money back guarantee!"
Score: 6/10

Team Rocket is disguised as pokemon evolvers, who take your pokemon for a few hours and evolve it. A kid named Roland leaves his Magby with them, and then runs into the heroes, where he's extremely impressed by Pikachu. The heroes think the idea of pokemon evolvers is suspicious, so Roland takes them to Team Rocket... who have cleared out.

Roland mentions his aunt Bertha, who soon shows up. Only Brock realizes she's an Elite Four member, and she insists he keep it secret because she doesn’t like people freaking out about it. Bertha is disappointed that Roland got his pokemon stolen, and chides him for not always watching over his pokemon at all times of the day. Meanwhile, Ash's thirty other pokemon are watched over by Professor Oak. Bertha agrees to help the heroes and Roland find Magby, but refuses to help directly, instead leading the heroes to think to go to the observatory to look down at the town, where Roland quickly finds Team Rocket with a telescope. They confront Team Rocket, who quickly reveal themselves. They try to escape, and again, Bertha refuses to get involved directly, telling the heroes to solve it on their own. Ash sends Roland and Brock to follow them while he, Dawn, and Bertha head them off, but they escape anyway into the... field of windmills?

Bertha notices that one of the windmills isn't moving, and tells the heroes to “strengthen their powers of observation? - this will be important later. Team Rocket again tries to escape, their fake windmill revealed, so Bertha, realizing the heroes can't stop them on their own, grabs her ATV (?!), and has her Gliscor destroy their balloon.

Ash and Dawn recover Magby's pokeball in a battle, so Bertha has Magby join the fight itself. Finally, Team Rocket reveals their... power armor for Seviper and Carnivine? This personally angers Bertha, who considers unnatural advantages like this armor to be horrifying and unfair. I can't even imagine what she thinks of Porygon. She angrily sends out her Golem, which is powerful enough to beat them despite the armor, and tells Roland to blast them off.

Brock accidentally mentions that Bertha is a member of the Elite Four, and she admits that she hates the name "Elite Four." Bertha offers to repay the heroes, so Ash asks for a battle. She sends out Hippowdon because it's hard to spell, and Ash counters with Torterra because it’s easy to spell. Bertha actually helps him during the battle by telling him to observe where Hippowdon will appear using dig, but she's really just ****ing with him because after he learns her lesson, she just finishes Torterra off and the episode ends.

DAWN OF A ROYAL DAY!
"Just because she’s wearing those street clothes, she thinks she’s so high and mighty!"
Score: 7/10

The heroes happen to be in a town where a contest is being held. Dawn decides she doesn't need to enter it, since she already has all of her necessary ribbons, when they meet Freesia, a... lady-in-waiting? Maid? I don't know, but she's here to crown Dawn a princess.

Freesia takes the heroes to Princess Salvia, a ten year-old girl who happens to look exactly like Dawn, but with shorter hair. Salvia is from an unnamed country, here to act as a royal ambassador (because who's more diplomatic than ten year-old girls?), but she desperately wants to compete in a contest with her Togekiss. Luckily, being such a contest fan means she's already aware of Dawn’s existence, so she asks her to pretend to be the princess for a day while she takes her place. I like how Dawn is completely happy dressed in an ankle-length dress, but Salvia is uncomfortable in Dawn's ultra-short skirt. Dawn's pokedex tells her that Togekiss "never appears where there is conflict," which... is obviously untrue? Despite Dawn having an American accent and Salvia having an English accent, Dawn easily fools all of Salvia’s attendants into thinking she's the princess.

There's also a "subplot" (I use quotation marks because that implies that it has a plot) where Dawn impersonates Salvia poorly. Part of her duties involve going to the contest and making an appearance, where she cheers Salvia on.

The final is of course Jessie versus Salvia. Seviper versus Togekiss. At first, Seviper does extremely well, but Togekiss eventually knocks Seviper out. This is notable because the finals are always about running out of time, this is seriously the first knockout in forever.

After the contest, Salvia (still dressed as Dawn) visits Jessie and gives her the ribbon as thanks for battling her. Jessie accepts it but is still annoyed at “Dawn” for acting high and mighty and having a stupid accent, but she decides whatever. Jessie has now won three ribbons and been given two - good for her, I guess. That’s about how many badges Ash legitimately won in the Indigo League.

Salvia and Dawn swap their clothing back, but Salvia has one final request of Dawn: please take her Togekiss and use it in contests. Huh. I would have assumed Togekiss was like her greatest friend and pet, but I guess not? She’s not even sad to see it go.

I have to admit, I kind of like this episode. Salvia is fun, and I’m a sucker for the “princess with too many responsibilities runs away” trope.

I liked that princess episode because someone finally commented Dawn's outfit is indecent.

LAST CALL-FIRST ROUND!
"I have a brand new performance here to share / And I'm so glad that you all will be there..."
Score: 7/10

The heroes have finally reached Lake Valor, and they go to a coordinator meet-and-greet. There they meet the "pokemon minstrel" Nando again, thus once again showing that at least three separate people translated Nando's title in the episodes he shows up in, and none of them check the other translators’ notes. I like how Nando once again mentions that he follows both gyms and contests to the heroes, even though he's told them this multiple times.

We also see Kenny, Ursula, Jessie, and Zoey. Okay, so annoying joke, b**** joke, Team Rocket joke, lesbian joke. I'm sorry, but it's just too easy to make these jokes with Zoey around.

The next day, the crowd is assembled to watch the biggest coordinator event of the year.

The judges are Mr. Contesta, Mr. Sukizo, three Nurse Joys, and mother****ing Fantina. So I guess someone really liked Fantina and insisted on putting her in as many episodes as possible, because, like, Wattson? Didn’t get this much attention by the writers.

Ursula has two Eevee, and I like her strategy here: have them do minor, boring stuff before throwing them evolution stones to evolve on stage. I assume she didn't actually practice that part with them. The audience loves it, even though she just ruined one of their lives by turning it into a Flareon. Nando, predictably, uses Altaria and Kricketot to make music together, while Jessie uses Yanmega's silver wind to... dye her orange dress pink? Whatever.

Zoey has her Finneon and Gastrodon make water rings to jump through, which I guess impresses the judges, while Dawn has Buneary make an ice roller coaster with ice beam and Cyndaquil flame wheel to travel around on it. Kenny's Floatzel and Empoleon use moves to emphasize their power-- but they screw up the final part of his performance, knocking Floatzel back and ruining it.

The first round winners are everyone except Kenny. He's the only named character not to move on to the second round. Kenny simply departs that afternoon without watching the rest of the contest. Wow. Wow. I bet when Kenny's an adult, he's going to be one of those parents who leaves music recitals as soon as his kid is done.

I half expected them to have Kenny reach the next round as a suspense final pick.

Well, maybe even they thought that having a named character, with all the other named characters competing, advance despite making a big mistake would've been ridiculous.

OPPOSITES INTERACT!
"Money's much easier to carry than product."
Score: 6/10

I like how the opening narration mentions Kenny losing in round 1 was a "surprise upset," as if you could be surprised by a ten year-old with no experience in his first contest losing. I mean, okay, yes, from our perspective he’s a rival, and you don’t expect rivals to get knocked out before fighting protagonists (which hearkens back to Gary losing before fighting Ash waaaaay back in the Indigo League), but from a more objective, in-universe perspective, Kenny getting knocked out that early is no big deal.

Ursula continues to act like a ***** to Dawn for no reason other than that all of her other rivals are too friendly to dislike. And what do ya know, round 2 involves Dawn versus Ursula.

Pachirisu/Mamoswine versus Gabite/Flareon. Dawn tricks Ursula into thinking she's attacking Gabite with discharge, only to shock Mamoswine and have it use an electric take down. Ursula is not without tricks, herself, however, and quickly gets back on her feet.

A Gabite double team puts Dawn on the defensive, and Ursula's pokemon don't let Dawn's try anything. Fortunately, Dawn is eventually able to get an ice chandalier going... even though she was explicitly planning to use it with Buneary but whatever. Ursula goes with a dig-jump-out-and-projectile-attack-before-digging-again strategy, but Dawn finally improvs an ice chandalier out of the holes from dig. The move knocks out Ursula's pokemon with seven seconds left on the clock. By the way, I timed it, and this five minute match took slightly less than ten minutes.

After the match, Dawn tries to make friends with Ursula, who tells her that she was just lucky and leaves… but it’s clear from the dialogue that Ursula has at least some respect for Dawn now.

An okay episode, I guess.
