TopicWhy do Athiests think its okay to celebrate Christmas?
benbeverfaqs

Except for some weird topics on the internet there's nothing religious about Christmas.
Where I live it's two days free (25 and 26) and for most people one or two weeks free. This is to brighten up the darkest winter days. It's a time to see family and friends and do fun things. It makes people more happy (except lonely people who are generally less happy during christmas). For the same reason we put up lights and other decorations. And put a tree with decorations in our house. It's a weird but fun tradition. Some people give presents. some people have a big dinner.
Christmas is celebrated by athiests, christians, sometimes muslims and jews as well except if they're very religious, and most of all by normal (as in not affiliated with a religion) people. They all think it's okay to celebrate because they grew up with it and/or everyone is doing it, having fun and harming nobody.
The only religious thing that's connected is the christmas stable based on the story of baby Jesus. But I don't see a deep religious meaning in that story.
Easter is even less religious. It actually does have a christian backstory with some meaning, but I don't know anyone who connects that with easter. Easter is all about spring, flowers, searching and eating eggs, food and seeing family.

These bakers have religious freedom. And they don't appreciate it.
They live in a great country. They are free to believe what they want. They are free to read what they want, pray how they want to, attend a church of choice, even build their own church. Most people in the world are not so lucky.

If they are ever in danger, police/firemen/paramedics will come to their aid. Without refusing them for their skin colour, gender or political views.
If they are hungry they can buy any food they want wherever they want. Without being rejected based on their hair color or on their choice of partner in life.

I have a really hard time understanding why people who live in a system like that can be hateful and start discriminating other people based on how they were born or on their life choices.
I mean, I don't want to marry a guy, but if some other guy does, then who am I to refuse him his happiness? I don't want to be forced in my choices, so why should I force other people?

These bakers are making a mockery of "religious freedom". They were just asked to bake a cake and not be discriminatory about it. If you start allowing discrimination for simple things (like refusing to sell a cake) then it'll start to turn ugly really quick. First the guy couple is refused a cake, a bit later they're refused food and drinks in lots of shops. And after the gay couple it's other groups turn. No cake and good food for people with the wrong religion etc. That path can only lead to hatred and apartheid.

It's called football everywhere except the US. Because, well, it's about playing with a ball and your feet.
American football is mostly about holding the ball and throwing so it should look for a better name. (Handball is already taken by another sport.) Handegg sounds dumb.

The only fun thing about football (soccer for americans) is the competitiveness between countries every 2 year when there's a continental or world cup. During (semi or quarter) finals nobody goes to work and the streets are empty.
I don't care about club football and the multi millionaires playing their (sometimes fixed) matches.

I've eaten tuna in a michelin star Japanese restaurant. It was crazy delicious. I can't give anything less than a 10.
Average sashimi gets a 7 or 8. Well prepared tuna steaks get a 9.
Frozen tuna is useable in things like oven dishes.

I'm not counting canned tuna since there's never tuna in them. They contain skipjack, a Tuna like fish. Canned "tuna" can be good in sandwiches and salads.

Maybe because controllers are an extension of your body, and thus people find it harder to take criticism? They're also part of an expensive console, and it's no fun hearing you wasted money on the wrong console.

Personally I like to use a lot of different controllers. The only thing I really don't like is the asymmetrical placement of the analog sticks on the xbox controllers, where one is high and one is low, can't really get used to that.

Resident Evil 4 came to mind because people claim that it did, but it's simply not true.

Resident Evil 4 was a great game. The series was in a bad state with games that few people were interested in like Resident Evil Zero or the shooter games. Then Resident Evil 4 came along with a breath of fresh air, great graphics and atmosphere, freedom of movement, fun to explore. It was connected to the main series, but with some side characters and a new twist (fast infected zombies). With that it didn't infringe too much on the old games, but added to them instead.

Resident Evil 4 could have saved the series. If the next game was as good or better than Resident Evil 4, and as -or preferably more- scary.
Instead the next game, Resident Evil 5, was much more action oriented, with a real time inventory, and an annoying coop partner that was always there distracting you.
Resident Evil 5 had two DLC, desperate escape (non stop shooting) and Lost in Nightmares. If only the whole game was as good as Lost in Nightmares. This DLC showed that they could make an atmospheric scary game. But the sales people wanted action and shooting.

The next game, Resident Evil 6, was more action heavy, and tried to be Call of Duty. Meanwhile other horror games took over the genre. Like Dead Space (which ironically went the same road) and Outlast.

Resident Evil 4 was the last great game in the series. But it didn't ruin it. It could've saved it. If only Resident Evil 5 was more like 4.

Depends on where you live. Just go to a place where it's not illegal.
It's perfectly legal where I live. In fact I have 2 female friends who used to do that for fun and for some extra money.

It can be illegal for a bunch of different reasons, for example:
-To protect the female from being abused. To protect her from doing things she'll regret later to solve money problems now. Or to protect her from people making her sell herself and keeping the money for themselves.
-To protect males from having to pay for sex. Some women like sex, and like it even more when they're getting 100 per hour.

You list English speaking countries. That's not the whole western world. People in some other western countries are much more direct and will just give you "no" for an answer.

The girls that are "busy" clearly enjoy their cellphone game more than your company. That should be a hint that they're not interested in a conversation. They'd rather not be impolite and say "no" so they pretend to be "busy". That or they play hard to get, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Note that women use a lot more non verbal communication than men, and (if they're young) just don't understand how (a lot of men) just don't understand most non verbal communicaton.

Giving Russian girls as an example is weird. Girls are a russian export product. Ever since WW2 there are more females than males in Russia. And a lot of men are poor and/or addicted. Girls from Russia, or Thailand or The Phillipines are much more inclined to make smalltalk to western (meaning probably rich) people.

I hate it when they (the US) are censoring or editting foreign movies or series. Like anime dubs (where Ash Ketchum eats "donuts" that look exactly like rice balls and nothing else) or censored games or manga. Especially when it makes its way here via the US. Leave your silly censoring in the US please!

As for Franchises getting an American version (also known sometimes as whitewashing).. like Goku or Naruto in New York.. I don't care much. I'll most probably skip it.
The American The Ring movie remake was pretty good though. Not as good as the Japanese Ring movie, but still worth a watch and plenty different.

In most cases I definitely don't need the americanization. There are already a lot of (great) movies, series, games and other media from the US and/or that take place in the US. Culturally it's very over represented.

Because talking about things is fun.
What country are you from where american means "from the US" pretty much exclusively?

Where I'm from American tends to mean "from the US" about 90% of the time when talking about people. And even more when talking about typical USA things like military or movies. But less than 90% when it involves items, biology, travel or history. Then american can mean the country or the continent.

Thing is, it's usually clear what people are talking about. American politics means the US, that's country specific. Usually with people it's country specific, and only the USA used the name of the continent in its name.

2%-6% of females die during childbirth.

Millions of drug addicts (a high percentage)
36% of people can read.
<15% of females can read.

I'll give this poor landlocked country a 3/10. One extra point is for fighting off the russians that tries to take their country. Another point is because it's better nowadays then when it was ruled by taliban not too long ago. At least children can go to school now.

You have it the wrong way around:
If people are from the USA it means they are Americans.
The other way around is not (always) true, Americans can be from the USA, but they can also be from other places. The country The United States of America is not the only place with the name America.

For one, and it's pretty big, there is the continent. People from North, Middle or South America are from the continent America. That means they are American. This includes Canadians, Mexicans and Brazilians.
A guy can be from the city Mexico City, country Mexico, continent America.
In the eyes of people from Europe or Asia, he is from the "new world"; America.

To make it interesting, there are cities called America.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America,_Limburg
Over 2000 people live there. They're Americans and also Europeans. They're from the city America, but not from the country or continent America.
There are also cities called Amerika or Amrica. There even used to be cities in America that were named America.

I meant to say that no other unison of nations had taken on the name of the continent yet. Since they were a unison of american nations, and the name was free, I think it was fair, and not arrogant. Though it might not have been the best choice. I don't think they prohibited other new nations from picking the same name, though none did. They were called united colonies before. Even though there were other colonies around. There's also a United Kingdom (UK) even though there are a lot of other kingdoms.

To be honest I thought of Mexico and Brazil as just two countries. But it makes sense that it's a unison of smaller countries/states/provinces/districts. Most countries are.
The Netherlands was originally the Seven Provinces.

While there are other states/countries in America, there are no other united states in/of America. The name is fair, and not arrogant.

Compare with European Union. Not a country but the countries in it share some things like military or currency. People in it call themselves Europeans. Just like how people in the United States call themselves Americans.
Doesn't mean that people in Europe but outside of the Union are not Europeans. Or people outside of the United States but in America are not Americans.

I noticed people from The United states of America call the rest of America "The Americas" instead of just America, which they reserve for their own country.

America isn't the whole 2 continents, there is North America (continent) South America (another continent) and America (country)

Assuming you're trolling I'll answer anyway. And I very much doubt people in south america get offended by Americans calling themselves Americans.

America is the whole continent west of the Atlantic Ocean. It's one continent according to France, Italy, Spain, Latin America, the United Nations and the Olympic games (hence the five rings, one is for America).
Some contintent models separate North and South America. Such as the 7 continent model. Which is used in the US and most of Western Europe. It's the model that makes the most sense in a lot of ways (geographically, historically, biologically).
This splits the (super) continent of America into North America and South America. Like the supercontinent of Eurasia can be split into Europe and Asia.

America is the "new world", named after Amerigo Vespucci, born 1454. the First guy who showed that brazil and the west indies were not the same as the east indies.

If you tell me you're "American" I won't know if you're from the US, or from another country in North or South America.
America (or American) is used a lot as short for United States of America. So I'll probably assume someone who claims to be American is from the US. Especially if they're speaking English. Other countries in America usually refer to their country, not the continent.

Because of dyslexia. Not all brains work the same way.
And some have trouble with words that sound the same being spelled differently.
Spelling, especially in English, is pretty arbitrary.
Think Knight, Night, Nite. They sound the same. But are written differently. Some words that sound the same but mean different things are written the same way. And some words that sound the same have different spelling. That's not very logical, and some brains have trouble with that.

In other cases people just don't care, or are just dumb, or received little education. Mostly one of those four reasons. Or trolling.

It was already the capital for decades. It had all the seats and important stuff. The US just had it's embassy in Tel Aviv, the bigger and more modern city. And now the US moves their embassy and acknowledges the capital, which makes sense.

Of course Jeruzalem is also the capital of the Palestine State, which doesn't get recognized by the US (neither the state nor the capital) despite the palestine people clearly living there.

To acknowledge one (instead of ignoring/postponing it) is good. Ignoring the other is not good. Hence why I choose "indecisive" in this poll.

I'd want to protect my family with a gun if I lived in a country where everyone had a gun.
Luckily I don't live in a country like that, meaning nobody needs a gun and everyone is more safe.
