I've seen it happen many times. It's just odd, man.

People get so emotional that they'll start dropping insults over whatever peripheral you use.

I don't get it either, it's simply a matter of opinion. But sadly some can't handle differing opinion.

They mostly feel the same to me. Obviously they're different, but the general layout of the current ones all seem similar.

Back in the day, controllers actually looked different and played differently.
Now they all are basically the same though.

Probably because it seems to work. Plus, once one controller becomes to different and harder to use, people will start saying how it sucks just because it's not like all the other controllers of controls. Probably... Basically, of it ain't broke, don't fix it, i guess...

Oh sure, there's a reason everyone's been emulating (size/shape at least, specific layouts always change) the xbox 360's controller since it came out in 2005.
But that's where the complaints were from initially.

I dunno. The Xbox One controller is basically the perfect controller, while the PS4 one hurts my thumbs after a while.

Idk. People are weird. Most complaints I hear are actually people thinking I'm weird for liking consoles and the controls better than PC and the controls for it. But, why would they keep using basically the same design if it was so bad. They change the design a little while trying to stay true to the original form, and it seems like it gets a little better with each go. Except Nintendo. They are all over the place. But honestly, I like their controls the best. Haha. Either way, the controls for Sony and Microsoft keep the same basic design, but change a little. And most consoles have used the somewhat similar button layout. So, it seems to work.

Maybe because controllers are an extension of your body, and thus people find it harder to take criticism? They're also part of an expensive console, and it's no fun hearing you wasted money on the wrong console.

Personally I like to use a lot of different controllers. The only thing I really don't like is the asymmetrical placement of the analog sticks on the xbox controllers, where one is high and one is low, can't really get used to that.
(that, and broken N64 analog sticks)
