back in the day (childhood) i'd feel real umbrage when someone betrayed an alliance of mine. nowadays i simply trust all players to act in their own self-interest, and feel betrayals actually add to games by preventing runaway scenarios

if i can't *really* interact with my opponents and a game is purely about puttering around with your own machine i get bored

yeah, absolutely. i've been playing a lot of new games recently, and there was a moment where something just sorta clicked and i started going with the flow instead of putting 100% of my energy into winning.

this is especially true in complex, competitive games- you have to just enjoy the journey, because there are too many competitors and moving parts to ever actually have control over the situation

i feel a little deflated when the entire group loses a big cooperative game. nobody gets to win, and it feels like a waste of time unless there's a real pathway to improvement

at least betrayal games let someone win every time

there's always the "argh why are you screwing me over on your left? so-and-so on your right is about to win, you should go after him!", but that's not quite the same, because there's just as fair of a chance that the player is lying. it does take a certain personality to tolerate/enjoy kingmaking FFA games
