I'm asking this question a little differently, since I have several parameters that I know will factor into my overall enjoyment of the game/series. I'd like you to assign point values to each of the ones listed above based on the following factors:

0-5 points: How easy is it to pick up and play? I have long stretches in work/life where I will be too busy to commit any time to gaming, so I need something that I can come back to a month later and still be able to pick up where I left off.

0-5 points: How addictive/compelling is it? I want something that, if I have an entire night to myself, will be able to keep me glued to the controller. This can be through very addictive gameplay and/or a compelling storyline that keeps me wanting more. Anything that can get stale or cause fatigue after awhile should get less points.

0-5 points: How necessary is it to the "video game canon"? For example, I would award 5 points to someone who has never played the Mega Man because it is such an iconic franchise in gaming.

0-5 points: How does it stand the test of time? If you see a game or series will forever be clouded by nostalgia but may not be so revolutionary for someone playing it for the first time in 2018, give less points. Give more for something that still looks/feels great in the modern era. Please note: out of this list, I grew up playing Mario and Sonic, but never formally beat the series. Everything else will virtually be an initial playthrough.

0-10 points: What is your overall rating of this game if I asked you this question without any context whatsoever?

Mario 3 and World are a couple of the best games ever made and Mario 2 even is pretty good. They all hold up incredibly well(play SNES versions imo), are easy to pick up and play (again, SNES version because you can save the game), and are still the definitive 2D platformers.

OoT is hugely important too but doesnt hold up as well as those Mario games.

I'm wondering if my scoring system is weighing the "importance" factor a little too much.

I really need something that will grip me if I manage to have a night where I can relax and play a game for 5+ hours. JRPGs used to be the easiest for me to do because I could either mindlessly grind or get hooked by advancing the story.

I've only REALLY played the Marios and OoT from that list (barely touched Sonic), so from my limited perspective:

SMW => OoT > Mario 1/3

The NES Marios are not easy games. You can try them for history's sake but you may just shelve them out of sheer frustration. SMW is just as iconic and much funner, imo. Its controls are more forgiving, and it offers funner ways of running Mario through levels (the cape and Yoshi, primarily). I don't think I've seen a single person argue that SMW has aged poorly.

OoT's controls are probably dated at this point, but I don't think they'd be much of an inhibitor. The level design is still solid and the soundtrack is incredible. And it's the one game that has most dominated the "best ever" discussions for the last 20 years, so you are missing a piece of gaming history by not playing it. If you enjoy it, you'll probably want to jump into MM immediately after like transience did last year.

Of all the other games, fuck if I know but probably GTAV. It's been a top selling game for five straight years - don't think any other game in history has managed anything like that.

SMB3 gets top marks in all of those imo. OoT would, but it's not as easy to pick up after a long while, I wouldn't think.
