I've had to the latter in a chamber [walk in, mask off, say some shit get the hell out] and that was ass. And all the MAs said that L3 Qual [which is atmospheric exposure] is barely anything because of how OC works.

I got a direct blast of the shit in the face. Burns like hell.

Yeah.

It's a two parter for why:
1. You're supposed to know what you're putting people through when you employ it, since it's a non-lethal that has no lasting effects [latter bit is a mild lie, it bites back later because it dries up and is still in contact, so it reflashes. It doesn't do anything crazy harmful. It just hurts like hell. Reflash feels like sunburn and soap in the eyes.]
and
2. That you're capable of maintaining your own composure if exposed to blowback.

As far as I know, anyone who does security or police work will be exposed. I've gotten it because I'm Navy.

On further reflection though I also subscribe to a certain kind of "personal responsibility." So if you full well know they are capable of mistakes, you don't put yourself in those kinds of situations in the first place.

Like how you don't walk into a construction zone, even if no one there would ever intentionally hurt you (unless you deserved it). But you kind of deserve it for being there in the first place, you know?

I think it's a fair thing to say. By all means, if you're being compliant and the police still do something wrong, then they should by all means be held 100% accountable, and the system needs to change so that that actually happens

But if you purposely resist, then you're basically inviting for them to react in whatever way they're going to react

So, really, if you hate/distrust the police, then I'd be placing my bets on being compliant being less of a risk than flat out basically giving them the freedom to do what they want by resisting.

The system needs to change so that police are held accountable if they do something wrong even if you do something wrong first. Compliance and passivity should not be prerequisites to avoiding execution without trial.
