i'm a student with a full time job (off campus) and i keep receiving emails like this:

All staff and students of Monroe Community College are encouraged to be a part of this amazing offer. This is a part time job that will not affect your present employment or study at the campus & you'll be working from home. Its fun, rewarding, and flexible.
2-3 hours daily
$450 Weekly
Part-Time Job

how the fuck do you work 2-3 hours and get paid $450 weekly? i make $462 weekly (after taxes) at my current job and i work 40 hours a week. also, could be a scam, but i receive tons of emails like this lol.

edit: i make $462, not $642 weekly. also i accidentally included the name of the school i go to. fuck it, don't care lol.

Depends. I've had 2 different jobs at my college. As a lab tech I was making close to 30 an hour. As an adjunct, I made 70 something an hour

nice. was this an internship? was this an offer made specifically to you based on your major? this email i just quoted is a general email that was probably sent to all students. i'm a CS major and this email probably isn't related to that.

Did that actually come from your college's .edu address? That sounds particularly scammy to me.

It's not unheard of to have the occasional high-paying job when the college gets a one-time grant for a special project or something, but that's more the exception and not the rule.

Look at the contact information. Does it link back to the university website, or have some obscure link or email that does not end in the .edu address.

You could also just contact your advisor at the college and ask them if this seems legit to them.

EDIT: The fact that they include both staff and students in that email is particularly troublesome. College job opportunities are typically tailored to either students or staff, not both. And even if it's available to both, they typically have different list-serves for each group and send out those emails separately (I work at a university so I'm familiar with how notices are sent out). That alone makes me think you shouldn't trust it.

No internships. Both part time
Lab tech was available as an undergrad student. I applied to my majors department (engineering and physics) and they took me. Though other people there weren't all from the same or similar majors. We had techs from accounting/CS/etc

Adjunct lecturer was something I was able to do once I started doing my masters. I literally just asked the department chair if I could teach and he said yeah. I don't think they'd let you do this as an undergrad

I have no idea what the job from that email is about tho

good points.

the email address it was sent from is an actual .edu address. but it still could have been spoofed.

there is a link in the email. i hovered over the link (without clicking it), and it appears to be a google docs form. strange.

i'm definitely not gonna click the link or respond to this email. but it might be worth looking into job offers at school. right now i work a full time job (40 hours a week), and it's a decent job but i wish i could go to school full time. right now i can't because i work too many hours at work.

This reminds me, actually

TC you can check if it's legit. But if it's not from your school, it's probably BS. We had this multi level marketing thing come into the campus a few times, and some people fell for it. They basically sell you a bunch of product and then you have to gain your money back and make a profit out of it on your own by selling that product to other people for a higher price. Don't do that

If you qualify for federal work study (which you would need to fill out your FAFSA to find out), there are usually a bunch of great job opportunities on campus. They are all part time, and never more than 20 hours a week, but the pay is usually decent and the hours are very flexible with your classes. With Covid, I've seen more colleges allow these jobs to also be worked remote and there's usually positions in every department.

If you don't qualify for work study, you still have access to many on-campus jobs, which again, are very flexible and work around your class schedule. I worked on-campus as a student as well as off-campus and the on-campus job was better by far. Pay was essentially the same per hour but on-campus was less stressful and allowed me to work on homework during slow periods.

yeah, the email seems too good to be true. i'm not gonna click on the link or reply to it.

interesting, i've never heard of federal work study. i fill out a fafsa every year for financial aid (i don't qualify for any financial aid rewards except for loans), but no one ever told me about federal work study. i will look into this.

it would be nice to have reduced hours while still being able to pay bills. not everyone has the ability to live with parents and go to school full time without a job. i live on my own, so i have to pay for everything myself. so this could be good for me.

Yeah, you'd want to talk with your financial aid office. They can pull out your file and FAFSA and be able to tell you your eligibility for work study.
