You think that's bad, 99% of the grass pokemon in gen 1 were also poison, which served no purpose in gen 1 whatsoever besides making them additionally weak to psychic, and possibly ground. So bulbasaur is gimped by being grass/poison rather than helped.

Joke post. Bulbasaur owns Viridian Forest because he can't be poisoned by Weedle.

And then every gym from 4-7 he sucks shit as does Loreli, Agatha and Lance.

Bulbasaur is an early game crutch. He ain't that great later...unless you use the Sleep Powder, Swords Dance, Hyper Beam Strat. If you one shot with hyper beam in gen 1 there is no recharge time.

That's not even the worst of it.
Ghost typing was added in to counteract how powerful the psychic typing was.
The problem? They made the only ghost pokemon also poison, which is weak to psychic typing.

The bigger problem: Gamefreak fucked up and accidentally made Psychics immune to Ghost-type moves in gen-1 instead of weak to them.

....and even if they didn't, the only ghost move that didn't deal a fixed amount of damage was lick IIRC. 30 base power.

^ ^ Adding to all that, isn't all of the above moot anyway as there were no actual ghost type moves yet, except the "dragon rage" type moves that only hit for a specific number of hit points every time?

Bulbasaur line was dope. Sleep Powder/Leech Seed/Razor Leaf/Body Slam was clutch. Especially since in gen 1 it takes a turn to wake up from sleep before you can use a move.

I always viewed Bulbasaur as "easy mode". He helped with the first 3 gyms more than the others. By the 4th you should have more pokemon.

Squirtle was "normal mode". Good against the 1st gym, but then you have to rely on other pokemon.

Charamander was "hard mode". You had to rely on other pokemon from the start.

Not that it mattered when the only moves of the type were confuse ray, lick with its whopping base 30 and physical typing, and night shade which deals fixed damage based on the user's level. The only thing that could use lick besides the gastly line was Jynx, which had the same attack power as Haunter.

In gen 1 Brock doesn't even use any rock moves so Charmander just takes forever and you want to use growl during bide turns.

Misty sucks regardless because of gen 1 special stats being attack and defense in one.

You get the dig tm on the way out of Cerulean City, and both Charmander and Squirtle can learn it. And if you get paralyze stunned while underground you get a free win.

This always tripped me up bc dat episode of the anime where they specifically go ghost hunting to take on Sabrina. And then you can't even use them against her in the game!

but bulbasaur and squirtle literally 1 shot geodude and onix. Charmander takes like 5-10 hits.

Grass types get tons of utility, especially early game. Though, I almost always went with the fire starter due to fire types being rarer.

Grass types, like bug, tend to be early-game types. They follow a similar format to gane levels, where the earlier levels are in fields or grass themes, while later levels take place in ice lands, fire lands, or places of darkness.

It's for the same reason that you tend to find Ice, Dark, Dragon, and to a lesser extent fire types later in the game, as they are considered more late-game types.

So early game types typically have more common weaknesses.

Recent games like Sword-Shield have moved away from this somewhat, but the earlier games followed this formula.

Think grass is bad at least grass has good resistances and good support moves.....Ice is weak to four 4 types and only has 1 resistance.

Psychic's other weakness wasn't any better either. Bug only had 3 attack moves and the strongest one was Twinneedle with a whopping 25 base power (which I think only Beedrill learned, which surprise it was also poison with low stats too so it was useless against Sabrina).

Gen 1 Psychic is pretty much the reason Steel and Dark types exist lol.

At least if you nailed 5 hits and crit with pin missile, every hit was a crit. Ironically this made the move a must have on Jolteon.

the number of strengths and weaknesses isn't the only thing that determines defensive viability.

like Grass is strong against Water, Electric, and Ground -- three types that are extremely common offensively
