Pretty sure a first edition of exodia was one, I had a card that was book price 140$ once but you still have to have them graded

Honestly I feel like a real answer would probably either be something like Exodia or even Pot of Greed. Maybe some new card I've never heard of is more broken.

It was never any good in the TCG. Even if Raindance didn't exist, it would still be bad.

Charizard wasn't a particularly great card in the original set IIRC, people just liked it because Charizard.

Pretty sure the first legal printing of a god was Obelisk the Tormentor and while he has decent anti-targetting and anti-Solemn protection, he still needs 3 tributes for a normal summon, dies if special summoned, can't attack and use his destruction effect at the same time, and is easily outed by non-targeting removal. I'm pretty sure he never saw meta play.

Obelisk was played in some Frog decks and I'd be surprised if a Formula Monarch top never had one tech Obelisk in it. But Frogs were really the only deck able to supply the summons needed to make it reasonable

This was also at a time when non-targeting removal had to be pretty creative/niche so he definitely had a sharper edge then, but I can't say he was anymore threatening than something like LaDD.

Yugioh doesn't have as clear parallels to Mewtwo (single strongest original Pokemon) and Charizard (single most popular 'badass' original Pokemon).

My suggestion would be Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning. BLS was Yugi's 8-star monster with the same ATK/DEF as Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Envoy was an extremely powerful non-ritual version and was part of the first banlist ever in Yugioh. Nearly decades later it went from 0 to 1 and saw a lot of meta play, whereas Blue-Eyes has never really come back except for a format where it got a ton of new support with the "Eyes of Blue" archetype. And even then there's no splash-able BEWD like there is BLS.

By overpowered, you mean having a big attack but actually being a bad card competitively? For the Base Set Charizard anyway.

I guess Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon would be a close comparison. Except that was at least used with Cyber-Stein and Megamorph.

Charizard was a flat-out bad card in the TCG

It had some meta decks. Fire spin plus double colorless energies that you could bring back with energy retrieval trainer cards. Its definitely OP on stats and ability, but faster decks like the hitmonchan/electabuzz combo could easily win over it.

3k sounds like a lot, until you realize Summoned Skull + Axe of Despair was stronger, yet didn't need as many tributes to pull off

I never liked inflated numbers in rpgs either. Like you start the game with 1000 HP and hit for 100 but so does the enemy. Why? Just have the game start with 10 HP and hitting for 1 and then gradually build up to the big 10000 numbers. Why add the zeroes so early to the game as a false sense of progression

The real issue with Yugioh is just how much text has to be crammed onto the cards. I don't understand why they've not moved to keywords yet.

If we are talking popularity, then Blue Eyes White Dragon is the closest equivalent to the Charizard card. They both have badass designs and were hyped to hell and back in the anime. They are also both just okay competitively despite the hype.

The Egyptian gods are more comparable to the ancient Mew card. Both had promotional cards tied to a special arc of the anime featuring a mystical creature/creatures and you were the coolest kid in school if you managed to get one.

Still, I've noticed the max attack with these cards is 3000 and all the dragon looking ones seem to have that

He was strong, however you had to get energy cards to put on him as he only had one movie that cost 4 and takes 2 off after using.

But from the very brief time I played I do remember if you could successfully get him out with enough energies there's not a card that could outlive his attack.

In actual Dark Magician or Red-Eyes decks he's still strong, with the caveat that you have to be playing a Dark Magician or Red-Eyes Deck.

Kinda funny Yugioh actually does this fairly often. Some cards have absolutely broken abilities but they're locked into mediocre decks so they're more like a handicap than an oppressive threat. (Toons have a literal banned card allowed at 3 copies and they're still a garbage meme deck >_>)

But then Konami does something stupid and releases another card that let's these crutch cards be used by much better decks and you get shit like Buster Lock. <_<

Ah yes, the days when basically every deck in the game had a plan B that was simply called "make Verte".
