Just got back from it. That was not a very good movie. I'd say honestly borderline bad.

I agree that magikoopa was also very good. But that was a legitimate voice actor in the role so that makes sense.

I think Cranky Kong was the only voice that didn't feel right to me. The other voices mostly seemed alright to me. Magikoopa was good, though.

Cranky Kong sounded like an old Jewish man or something, it was a little off yeah.

I don't know if any of this is Yoshi-style confusion where in Japanese the entire species is called Kamek.

The Bowser/Kamek scenes were easily my favorites.

That and King Bob-Omb's two seconds in the spot.

I haven't seen this but I'm glad Kamek gets some love. Maybe one of these days he'll make it into Mario Kart...

I'm a dumbass who thinks of The Runaway Guys quickly when it comes to Mario, so stuff like ProtonJon being a Waluigi fanboy and Chuggaaconroy loathing Sticker Star come to the forefront of my mind. Considering this and how infamous Miyamoto has become for meddling in Mario games to keep their plots to the bare minimum, I feel like he may have done something similar here. I'm also a little baffled by how the Mario movie is getting the kind of bad reviews I would have thought more critics would have given to movies I mentioned before like the Sonic movies, Pokmon: Detective Pikachu, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife since I reasoned out that the only reason those movies have Fresh ratings on RT is because of nostalgia for their respective brands. I was wondering why Mario is exempt from being let off the hook in the same way, only to realize it's probably because the franchise is already incredibly reliant on nostalgia as is so it didn't hit quite as hard here. Not to mention there was quite frankly probably not as much of a wow factor to this Mario movie as there was to those four movies.

Miyamoto was also asked in an interview when the next Mario game is coming out, due to no main series installment in over half a decade. I find that interesting in light of all the praise Odyssey got for finally moving the series forward instead of re-hashing the same old same old, and how Mario, Zelda, and Star Wars all had major franchise "reinventions" in 2017 that were welcomed by critics with open arms but have all gotten varying degrees of hype backlash since (admittedly way more for Star Wars).

Welp, now the alt-right is trying to co-opt the movie's success to give a middle finger to Disney. Which I actually approve of, but not for the reasons they do, and tbh it's not like Illumination Entertainment is much of an improvement. Glad Nintendo is gaining a foothold in Hollywood, but considering Miyamoto's reputation the past decade or so I'm not entirely sure if this is the best way to do it.

More on topic, apparently Miyamoto wasn't responsible for anything regarding how Sticker Star turned out beyond his mandate to have an excuse plot and not create any new characters. Fair I guess.

I know we're getting a sequel(s), but I would kind of love if after this becomes the biggest movie of the year, Nintendo just does a mic drop and never makes a sequel.

In regards to the Cranky Kong discussion upthread, for a brief moment I wondered if Larry David was doing the voice.

I think what makes Cranky's voice sound weird or bad is that the character is nothing like the Cranky Kong in the games where he's just a crotchety old man dunking on DK all the time. Instead here he's just a generic old man ruler of monkey island or whatever with a little sass.

Looks like ~$145-150 million opening weekend. I'd say that's comfortably past my over/under $70 million post, lol.

The movie was great! It was alot of fun!

Pratt's voice ended up being pretty okay but eh, I'm not a fan. Those trailers did not flatter him at all

only complaint is its fast and short but eh, its for kids and their short ass attention spans

Worldwide animated opening record, Incredibles 2 still holds the domestic record. However, if Mario had had a normal 3-day opening rather than a 5-day opening it might have broken that too. Should hit a billion for sure.

After the critical success of The Last of Us and Arcane, along with the commercial success of Mario and the pair of Sonic movies, studio execs will now be furiously bidding for the rights to a number of available IPs.

We might get that MGS movie/prestige mini series yet still!

I truly hope we DON'T get a "Nintendo cinematic universe" like a few posts back though. Sure give me a Zelda and a Metroid movie. We don't need them to be connected though.

I hope they try a Nintendo Cinematic Universe. But only if they also wildly overreact to Mario's success, immediately greenlight a ton of niche adaptations that end up flopping, and end up shutting Illumination down as a result.

I'm just saying it's fair to say that the MCU's success has not paid off for its comics or characters.

If the "NCU" becomes a thing and leads to creative stagnation in the games, then I'd rather not have an Ice Climbers movie that leads directly into Mario 2.

Sure - because with one-offs I think it's more likely that the adaption supports the original, rather than erases it. The more "Disney-fied" it gets (spread out and endlessly milked) the more the original product is destined to fade to obscurity.

So if we could have one off films (preferably with totally different vibes and audiences than Illumination) I could see that paying off really well. If we get an endless series of fan-service kid movies, then that's bad.

On that point I would argue that this is unlikely to happen because Disney and WB went with vertical synergy by promoting films from IPs they owned.
Theatres aside, they own the whole chain and they decided to allocate their marketing budget to the films. I've never really seen marketing for a comic book storyline on par with what Mario Odyssey or Mario Kart got.

Illumination here are essentially just a contractor for Nintendo to market their product.
Nintendo holdings will still be massively promoting their video games regardless of the success of a cinematic universe (which is early to say will happen, we're one film in)

The situations to me just aren't comparable.

Like Sony has a hand in film/tv productions for Spiderman/The Last of Us and Uncharted, but this hasn't stopped them from heavily advertising their first party games.

I want to see Stephen Sommers direct a Metroid movie. With Rachel Weisz as the villain, an evil counterpart of her character from Black Widow in terms of being the leader of a rogue faction of the Federation coordinating a network of spies. While you're at it, just try to stock full of every high-profile actress to make it as feminist as possible. Include Demi Moore as a bald woman who disowned her husband for going too far to defend her.

The premise would probably just be Samus and a bunch of other guys happening on an abandoned space station, done in the style of the likes of The Black Hole, Event Horizon, and Deep Rising (hence my suggestion of Sommers to direct). We might as well include John Boyega as Anthony Higgs for the full bash brothers experience so he gets more to do than he did in Star Wars.

I quite liked Incredibles 2, it got great reviews and early audience responses and I dont know why people suddenly decided to hate it. Also rare Pixar sequel that was actually needed. Its the best Pixar sequel thats not one of the three Toy Story sequels!

Also I dont want an NCU because it would all be Illumination. :/

yeah the MCU has established the formula of constantly removing the helmet so you can see their faces as much as possible

Dredd shows you can make a great film and keep the helmet on. Unfortunately that movie bombed!

A Metroid movie does not feel like it would fit the tone of Illumination at all.

If they are really working toward a Super Smash Bros movie then I bet Samus just appears in that one without any build up. She can be the super serious, out of place character that gets played for laughs next to all of these fun characters.

And they already established in the Mario movie that Mario is a gamer. So he'd probably recognize all of the characters from his NES anyway. He'll explain who they are to Luigi or something.
