Oh god I just noticed all the Elvis noms.

I was really looking forward to that movie, but boy did it suck.

It was bad enough when the Queen Biopic was all over this thing, this was even worse.

Austin butler deserves the best actor award because he acted so hard that he accidentally got his voice stuck in Elvis mode forever

Colin Farrell just did his normal Irish accent like a coward, its an easy choice

Only film per country is allowed to be nominated for Best International Film, and India's selection committee submitted something else. This is one of many insane rules for the category.

LMAO. IRL version of the you can only nominate one game per system rule from 2004. What a joke.

there should be a special bonus Oscar for Best Extra, or like a lifetime achievement award for being a background guy and it should go to the guy whose name is actually Waymond (Waymond Lee) who was in EEAAO

that dude has range. He was in a movie nominated for best picture, he was in an episode of Always Sunny I was watching yesterday, he had an actual speaking role in Workaholics. One of my all time favorite dudes to notice and be like oh hey, its that dude!

Being submitted for Best International Film has no bearing on eligibility for Best Picture. There have been films nominated in both categories before.

Yeah, that's puzzling. There's something to be said about the value of good narrative construction even in a big popcorn movie that doesn't have sparkling dialogue, and I think this is an underrated aspect when people judge writing. I wouldn't begrudge a screenplay nom for Avatar or Black Panther for instance. There's just nothing to Top Gun's story though.

I mean that's what really gets me right, it's not that I have contempt for good writing in popular films, it's that Top Gun has bad writing in a popular film in my opinion but it's treated as something that's worthy of being called "real cinema" when you have these same people decrying stuff like superhero movies which are just the same shit but better, and it makes me roll my eyes out of my head at the pretentiousness of it all. Top Gun's a perfectly serviceable popcorn flick with some really great action in it, but aside from the true movie magic that's found in its cinematography (again, the thing it WASN'T nominated for) it's just the same old shit as the MCU or whatever, except worse in just about every way I can imagine

I dont decry Marvel films for screenplay and I also get why Top Gun is there. Strong character-driven blockbuster, BP nominee, not much competition as it was a very original-heavy year. What replaces it? Avatars script got more criticism than Top Guns for sure. Setting that to one side, what else, Wakanda Forever? Not really seeing it. Of course if you rank the nominees it is definitely in fifth place but it makes sense as to why its there.

Now should it have gotten Cinematography over Screenplay? Absolutely. Cinematography was the one wacky category this year though. I can think of three big snubs with that, Nope and The Batman. No idea what wins now.

Gonna make a No Guts, No Glory prediction and go with Kerry Condon for Supporting Actress:

Angela Bassett and Jamie Lee Curtis split "Career Oscar" votes, and Stephanie Hsu leeches further votes from the latter. The British contingent then comes through and votes in a block for Condon. Whenever you have a somewhat divided field, never count out the Brits coming through and voting for one of their own.

Aftersun robbed from Best Picture, not that I ever thought it would happen. My favorite of the year (so far, but I can't see it changing). I suppose I should be thankful that Paul Mescal is there to rep for it.

I was rooting for The Quiet Girl for International, but unfortunately that's another pipedream now. Fantastic movie, and I just love to see the Irish language thrive.

Between Colin Farrell, Paul Mescal, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan it's a good year for Irish acting nominees! (And yes don't call them British, they would not like it!)

I've been looking up the strange story of Andrea Riseborough's nom- no precursors, no attention for the movie, not on anyone's radar at all until the past couple of weeks, when a bunch of her famous actor friends started pushing for her hard on social media and telling everyone to vote her first on the ballot. And it worked! Truly bizarre.

Yes while the British Isles is a geographic term dating back to the Romans it is not legally recognised anywhere (both UK and Irish law just say these islands) and for the last few hundred years has a lot of colonial implications which means that Irish people definitely do not identify with it.

Martin McDonagh himself is both British and Irish though, and the film is a UK/Ireland co-production, so the British side of the industry is still going hard for it. Although with that said they are also going hard for All Quiet on the Western Front which got 14 BAFTA nominations so its not just about nationality.

https://puck.news/was-the-andrea-riseborough-oscar-campaign-illegal/

So this is weird. Riseboroughs campaign may have violated Academy rules and they are reviewing it. Likely wouldnt mean Deadwyler gets the nomination if Riseboroughs is rescinded though, as the last time this happened they just had four nominees. Would be funny if both the oscars and the Razzies rescinded a nomination for lead actress though.

I actually think they are very similar movies where their is a ton of allegory going on and you have absolutely no idea where it is going to end up.

I think I liked it about the same as banshees and it falls squarely in that weird movie place

Yeah I agree with this. Once, uh, permanent choices were made I felt like the movie turned a corner that I wasn't really comfortable with which damaged the theme imho. While I understand the allegory I don't think it actually made it a better movie

The permanence and shocking nature of that decision is the point. Its about how we hurt ourselves when we create unnecessary conflict and push others away. It also ties into the analogy of the Irish Civil War, where you had people who had just until months ago been on the same side suddenly killing each other for no real gain or even much point to the conflict. That was a permanent harm that created a societal and political split that still exists in Ireland to this day.

I also will say my other biggest issue with banshees is it was extremely hard to understand. I liked that it didn't spell out the allegory or plot, but the language itself was hard to parse. The combination of extreme accents and regional dialect led me to rewinding a few times trying to understand what was just said. I actually completely missed The molestation because it was spoken about in regional euphemism. My spouse had to point it out to me.

I don't think that is a knock against the movie in general, but it made it less enjoyable to watch. (I could have put on subtitles but I just hate when subtitles describe non verbal sounds. It throws me off)

In case anyone is interested, here is a Streaming Guide for where these films are streaming, or where they should eventually end up. Anything in italics, I didn't see a confirmation, but am extrapolating based on other films from the company/distributor. Didn't bother with shorts, or the Song nominees:

Netflix: All Quiet on the Western Front, Blonde, Glass Onion, Bardo, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, The Sea Beast
Hulu: Triangle of Sadness, Empire of Light, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
HBO Max: Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, All That Breathes, Navalny, The Batman
Disney+: Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Fire of Love, Turning Red
Amazon Prime: Women Talking, Argentina: 1985
Peacock: Tar, The Fabelmans, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Paramount+: Top Gun: Maverick, Babylon
Apple+: Causeway
Showtime: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Whale
Starz: Living
PBS: A House Made of Splinters

?: Aftersun, To Leslie, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Close, EO, The Quiet Girl

People have always said this, it's just become a bigger thing in recent years as everyone's gotten bigger TVs, better sound systems, and moved to HD streaming of their movies. Which is a great approach 90% of the time, but some blockbusters (like Avatar or Gravity or Christopher Nolan stuff) are still designed and best experienced on 70 foot screens with 50 speakers surrounding you, and watching in your living room doesn't quite get you there.
