there are a higher intelligence amongst cats though, some of them do desire to be more than "just a cat" and seek out jobs!

some cats will go and spend time with old people in a nursing home, some cats will go to warehouses and guard them from smaller critters, while some go to war overseas to fight for their country.
And if you leave your cat indoors while you're at work, a surprising number of them will go online and use your credit card to pay for porn.

There is no such state as Montana. It's just a name they invented, in the expectation that people would believe it was a real state but would never try going there and find out it doesn't exist.

Unrelated to the topic, but i hate how Nordic Runes have been essentially co-opted by the far right
I think proto-Nazi occult cranks like the Thule Society were pulling that stunt as early as 1918. Seeing as how quite a few Waffen-SS divisional emblems were designed around runic symbols, they've been neo-Nazi chic since the end of WWII. Most people don't know the political significance of a runic badge or tattoo when they see one, but I agree, the futhark being hijacked by fascists is a bit like having your country's flag stolen by them.

Nice story man, glad you were able to grow better as an individual!
Thanks. I married her, the girl who changed my life, and although that part of the story might not exactly have had a happy ending (we separated after three years, divorced after five), I don't regret a single moment of what happened, only for what happened before we met. Part of me will always love her for that. (That's probably not something I'd confess to wifey #2, mind you...)

My own transformation at the age of 25. I pissed the years of my wasted youth down the drain as a neo-Nazi activist. (That wasn't what we in the "political soldier" faction of the National Front liked to call ourselves; we preferred the label "Third Positionists". But we all knew what we really meant.) I also rubbed shoulders with loyalist paramilitaries in Northern Ireland and shook hands with "former" (wink) UFF and UVF men who I knew were killers.

And yet I went from that to being a campaigner in the Anti-Apartheid Movement.

So, what happened? Did I find Jesus, or something? No, fuck that. Instead, the unthinkable happened: I fell in love with a black girl at work. (Yes, even neo-Nazis have day jobs.) It was a shock like having a glass smashed in my face.

Falling in love with her wrenched my life around 180 degrees. I got educated. I dumped my shitty beliefs in the trash can where they belonged, renounced the movement, and cut off former friends and "comrades" like gangrenous limbs. I pulled up my roots and moved to a different city, because living a real-life Romeo and Juliet story in which you're a "race traitor" isn't likely to end happily. (My parents had my "old friends" knocking on their front door and asking if I'd left a forwarding address.)

The only relic I have left now from that earlier, shameful part of my life is a couple of tattoos (odalrune and wolf's hook, if you're interested). Plus the shaven head.

The one weakness of the US was a tendency to get mired in nation-building ("losing the peace")
I think the real weakness of the US was lacking both a clear understanding and policy on how to put a country back together again after having taken it apart, not that it tried to do so.

The slide of Afghanistan into chaos after the Soviets finally cut their losses and ran had consequences that sucked for thousands of Americans in September 2001. It proved that malign neglect of what seem to be reassuringly distant backwaters that rarely rate a glimpse on a TV screen can come back to bite you badly on the ass. Uncle Sam wanted the Russian bear out of Afghanistan and once that was accomplished, dusted off his hands, turned around and walked away because as far as he was concerned, that was the end of the story and what happened to the Afghans themselves afterwards didn't matter. But history decided otherwise.

The association is always the occasional colorful holiday and keeping traditions alive and that stuff, but beyond just being nice, it's useful.

Knowing a location, where it's safe, where the food and supplies are both good and cheap, the informal shibboleths that differentiate you from "outsiders" that allow for information, assistance, even favors from otherwise total strangers. Beyond locale, you might've inherited self defense practices, a widely applicable trade, a way to sustain yourself in unusual situations. Those things are held together by those seemingly arbitrary parades and obligatory events. I haven't been appreciative enough.
Those are the advantages of spending a vacation in your own country.

But when that piece of paper is the back of an envelope, and the decision costs tens of thousands of lives because you think that "mission accomplished" simply means successfully taking a country apart without needing to know how to put it back together again, then it's a bad decision.

I would say that if there is a ... well, OK, let's call it an "extragalactic higher intelligence" ... out there somewhere -- an hypothesis that I'm willing to accept on an intellectual level, but don't personally believe -- then we have about as much hope of comprehending it as goldfish have of comprehending the human world beyond their bowl.

Goldfish know that there are mysterious figures on the other side of the glass wall who sprinkle a handful of fish food flakes onto the surface of the water now and again... But that's about it.

But my view is that all these tribal myths and superstitions from the Bronze Age Near East (which only enjoyed such longevity because in time, they came to be backed by state power) have simply anthropomorphized complex phenomena in an attempt to make sense of natural forces beyond Bronze Age understanding. Who or what makes the sun rise and set? It's an invisible man in the sky. We should have outgrown this primitive shit by now.
