I'd say if there's a policy to "neutralize" the Gazan Palestinians as a threat in the longer term by reducing the resident population to "manageable proportions" by destroying so much of their infrastructure and housing that the Strip will remain largely uninhabitable (I expect the Israeli government to try to block funding for reconstruction), and this policy is known to be killing tens of thousands of civilians either directly through violence, or through hunger, disease, exposure, denial of aid, and the targeting of their healthcare facilities, it's pretty damn genocidal in effect and intent.

Which is technically correct. Article II of the Convention states: "In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group..."

Unfortunately, intent is notoriously difficult to prove; the requirement raises the bar so high that it'd be extremely difficult to obtain a conviction in a courtroom. (Deniers of the Rwandan genocide point to the inability of the ICTR to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that the mass killings were premeditated, planned and prepared at the highest levels of government as "proof" that there was "no genocide".) And there's a knotty legal problem with interpreting precisely how "in part" is to be defined or measured: how many deaths does it take before it becomes genocide?

Harry might have felt he had to air his family's dirty laundry in public because no one else would have dared to do it.

I don't know everything that was on Harry's long list of grievances (because I'm not interested enough in royal soap opera to watch the interviews or read all the stories), but it sounds like airing them in private had gotten him nowhere and his relationship with his family had broken down long before he went public. Despite all the royal and pro-royal outrage about disloyalty and betrayal, blah blah, he apparently felt they'd betrayed him and his wife first -- but no one was going to breathe a whisper about that. And in view of the fact that Harry is treated like a Judas while a veil is dutifully kept tightly drawn over his dad's infidelity to his mother, he was dead right.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of self-publicists either, but I recognise that if he's no longer a blue-blooded leech suckling on the taxpayer's teat, then he's got to earn a crust somehow. Seeing as wifey has a media career background, the interview and publishing circuit is an unsurprising choice. Although I'd had more respect if he'd tried retraining as, I dunno, an accountant.

Was there a need for me to post again? I told you that Harry tanked his own reputation and that's true. Just look at how popular he is. Both him and Meghan were well regarded by the general public (not the newspapers mind you) until he stepped away from the royal family.

I'd say the feeling was more that he'd crossed a boundary by going public with his own side of the story and publishing a memoir. Bizarrely, in a country where we're duty-bound to live, eat, drink and breathe every moment of the royals' lives, where they're the living epitome of a media obsession with celeb culture, for Harry to air his grievances in print and in TV interviews was viewed in some circles as bad taste: it smacked of disloyalty to his dad, who'd cheated on his mum with another (married) woman.

And indeed, as far as the Tory tabloid trash are concerned, failure to lick sufficient shit out of the royal rectum is tantamount to treason.

We still pay for the upkeep of their official residences, their staff and other expenses incurred, plus a nice little earner for lesser royals who perform "official functions". Like ai23 intimated, it's purely at the discretion of the monarch whether or not they pay tax and if so, how much; by the 1990s Liz wisely volunteered to pay for some of the expenses out of her own pocket, but I'm not sure how much transparency there is around the royal finances.

On the upside, Charlie only had to wait a few days between getting a diagnosis and starting treatment. I'll bet that massively cheered up the nearly 100,000 newly diagnosed non-royal cancer patients in the UK in 2023 who had to wait for more than 62 days before starting life-saving treatment. "Your royal masters' lives are everything; your lives are worth nothing." Always nice to hear.

I can't remember as many people gathering at my place as they did in UK at the funeral of the Queen.

I don't think it's so much about pro-royal sentiment, I think it's more about people wanting to feel that they're at the heart of an historical event, that they've got a tiny role as an extra in some grand drama on the world stage. "I was there that day!"

I think our problem (I'm talking as a Brit) is that when a member of Britain's first family on welfare even so much as does a fart, the media treat it as an historical event.
