Search engines

1. Google
Pretty obvious I think. It's super easy and simple to search anything and everything. It's lists when searching that pop up are also super helpful.

2. Bing
Bing's rewards program is excellent and I've gotten so many Amazon giftcards from it. Search-wise it's not really that much different from Google, but I do like the personalized news feeds.

3. Yahoo
I like the "alternative" search results you often get. Also has the most superior image search imo.

4. Dogpile
Simply grade school memories of using this. It's not bad tbh, just dated.

5. Ask
I liked when it was called Ask Jeeves. Never used this too much.

That's all I really know/used.

9. This Exists
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnc8DxbEb6rzOCk3vea8wrw
Would definitely be higher with a more regular upload schedule, but his videos are so much fun and cover super niche sub-cultures mainly dealing with music and the internet. He's the primary reason I appreciate genres like black metal and regional scenes like Islamic punk or African metal. I love channels where you can learn so much from and springboard into your own research.

10. Twin Perfect
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrmzfpLoX_ogBgSShfaiQ4A
This is a bit of a personal one for me, as binging their Real Silent Hill Experience series helped me through a brief bout of depression a couple of years back. I don't always agree with their analysis but they still make interesting videos and their super in-depth coverage of the Silent Hill HD Collection in particular really opened my eyes to the poor qualities of those two ports.

YouTube channels

1. RedLetterMedia
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrTNhL_yO3tPTdQ5XgmmWjA
I look forward to every upload with absolute glee. No one makes me laugh harder as much as these guys do. And though they goof around often, they're very knowledgeable about film and I've experienced so much new stuff just from the films Jay has mentioned in the past.

2. Raycevick
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1JTQBa5QxZCpXrFSkMxmPw
No one does in-depth video game essays much like he does. His reviews delve into the minutiae of video game development and he really makes you understand the why and the how something was made, which I appreciate so much. Big influence on my personal writing style and goals.

3. Stop Skeletons From Fighting
https://www.youtube.com/user/lophatjello
Derek and Grace have huge passions for gaming, especially retro, and you really learn a lot about things like obscure video game accessories (N64 mouse is a personal fave) or specific topics like the GBA FPS library or every Doom port ever. The videos are presented in a really personal and upbeat manner too, which make them an absolute blast to watch. They are also big fans of survival horror which is excellent!

4. Become the Knight
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBIObHID9vYsowPtbYKVdMw
One of my more recent faves, BtK is incredibly knowledgeable about music and it's always hilarious to see him take down recent pop songs/trends. Found some pretty awesome music (mostly prog. metal) through his suggestions and he also makes his own music which is kickass. I recommend the track "Grey Madder" if you're interested.

5. RagnarRox
https://www.youtube.com/user/RagnarRoxShow
This guy's horror analyses are incredible. Probably the most in-depth on Youtube. He analyzes mainly survival horror games but he also does movies too, often talking about singular monsters or themes like Pyramid head or the bubonic plague, and how they were and have influenced the horror genre as a whole. Really interesting stuff.

6. ThorHighHeels
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCilouT5irlCNn2imcCDhhJQ
While he does typical game reviews too, ThorHighHeels really nails the videos about minor gaming details and gets to the core of why I love gaming so much. As a few examples, he has discussed things like how trains set the pacing and mood in various games, or the value of video game artwork sticking with you long after the game has ended. I would never have expected soemone to cover these obscure and niche topics, but I'm glad there's someone who does.

7. Super Bunnyhop
https://www.youtube.com/user/bunnyhopshow
I used to have him higher but he uploads so infrequently now that it's hard to really connect with the channel anymore. That being said, his critical close-ups on the MGS series are still my favorite videos on Youtube, and I like his journalistic approach to his content.

8. This is Dan Bell
https://www.youtube.com/user/moviedan
Another recent fave, most famous for his Another Dirty Room series, in which he and his friends go to filthy and sometimes even unsafe hotel rooms and comb the entire room to see how bad it really is. It's simultaneously disgusting and hilarious. That's not all though; Dan Bell also does the very minimalist and personal Dead Mall Series, which are often sad and eye-opening experiences to the state of mall culture in the United States. He even explores famous haunted/supernatural areas with a keen eye. All together great stuff.

8. Ultimate Holiday Blowout
The world's holidays battle for supremacy as only one will remain to be celebrated year-round. Characters will be based on public domain figures and original designs based on various holiday iconography.

Projected Roster:
Santa Claus, Krampus, Tom Turkey, Jack O'Lantern, Uncle Sam, Easter Bunny, Cupid, Punxsutawney Phil, Elves, Mummies, Bats, Leprechaun

9. The X-Files
I feel like there's a ton of great MOTWs to choose from here, and a potential storyline as to the reason they are all back.

Projected Roster:
Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Eugene Victor Tooms, The Eves, Flukeman, Robert Patrick Modell, Peacock family, Guy Mann, Leonard, Polly/Chinga, Mr. Chuckleteeth, Big Blue

10. Creepypasta
I think the wealth of characters to choose from would make an interesting roster. The storyline has potential to be frightening.

Projected Roster:
Jeff the Killer, Slender Man, Eyeless Jack, The Rake, Laughing Jack, Smile Dog, BEN, Mr. Bear, Sonic.exe, Zalgo, Pinkie Pie/Pinkamena, Mr. Widemouth, Herobrine, Red (from Godzilla)

Shows/movies/games/crossovers/etc. that would make for good fighting games

1. Horror Icons
This one is so obvious I can't believe it hasn't been done yet. Get the rights in order and put it together. Oh well, at least there's always Terrordrome.

Projected Roster:
Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Michael Myers, Ghostface, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Chucky, Candyman, Leatherface, Pennywise, Pinhead, Imhotep, Wolf Man, Tarman, Samara Morgan, Xenomorph, Predator, Jack Torrance, Babadook, The Thing, Ash Williams, Leprechaun, Pyramid Head, Nemesis, Jaws (mini-boss)

2. Arrowverse
I can't believe any direct Arrowverse video games have been made yet honestly. An Injustice-style fighting game would be perfect and it would be styled like the in-show crossovers. I would loosely base in on the stories Bloodlines and Eclipso: The Darkness Within. It would be completely canon and all actors would reprise their roles, and it would hopefully spring-board some new characters into live-action.

Projected Roster:
Green Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Spartan, Arsenal, Black Siren, Wild Dog, Killer Frost, Elongated Man, Reverse-Flash, Vibe, Ray, Pied Piper, Katana, Bronze Tiger, Ragman, Deathstroke, Sara Lance, The Atom, Mick Rory, Vixen, Steel, Martian Manhunter, Grodd, Eclipso, Hitman, The Question

3. Metal Gear Solid
The terrorist groups from each game would be enough to fill a whole roster. The storyline would start out as a simulation covering all eras, but would be slowly revealed to a sinister Patriots plan to create an ultimate super-soldier.

Projected Roster:
Solid Snake, Big Boss, Raiden, Ocelot, Liquid Snake, Gray Fox, The Boss, Venom Snake, EVA, Meryl Silverburgh, Quiet, Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven, Vamp, Fatman, Solidus Snake, Volgin, The Pain, The Fear, The Sorrow, Decoy Octopus (Mokujin-type character), Johnny Sasaki (joke character), Jetstream Sam*, Mistral*, Monsoon*, Bladewolf* (*all part of a Revengeance DLC pack)

4. Disney
Disney is obviously huge and would draw in a lot of attention, hype, and money. Excellent variety of characters to choose from too.

Projected Roster:
Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Elsa, Goofy, Donald Duck, Ariel, Anna, Winnie-the-Pooh, Belle, Simba, Ursula, Flynn Rider, Olaf, Merida, Cinderella, Maleficent, Jafar, Rapunzel, Snow White, Mulan, Pocahontas, Woody, Tinker Bell, Stitch, Buzz Lightyear, Captain Hook, Tigger, Genie, Hades, Bolt, Mike Wazowski, Jack Skellington, Alice, Sully, Gaston, The Beast, Scar

5. The Tommy Westphall Universe
Statistically the largest roster potential bar none. Also a chance for some absolutely crazy TV crossover action.

Projected Roster:
Morley cigarettes, John Munch, Tommy Westphall, Oceanic Airlines, Slusho!, Lariat Rental Cars, every TV character ever

6. Action Movie Characters
The most bombastic and action-packed fighting game that could be on the market. Filled with plenty of exploding buildings and terrorist plots.

Projected Roster:
John McClane, Ellen Ripley, James Bond, Sarah Connor, Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Ethan Hunt, The Bride, Terminator, Martin Riggs, Neo, Snake Plissken, Dirty Harry, Katniss Everdeen, Mad Max, Rambo, Jason Bourne, Man With No Name, Imperator Furiosa, T-1000

7. Netflix-verse
Binge this game's story mode over and over again and battle it out as your favorite Netflix characters.

Projected Roster:
Daredevil, Kingpin, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Colleen Wing, Punisher, Frank Underwood, Piper Chapman, Sun Bak, Wolfgang Bogdanow, Eleven, The Demogorgon, Prairie Johnson, Takeshi Kovacs, Theo Crain, Sabrina, Kimmy Schmidt, Dev Shah, BoJack Horseman, Trevor Belmont, Hormone Monster, Devilman, The Dog (from Black Mirror - "Metalhead"), Nick Jakoby, Moonlight Man

Final Fantasy party members

Only doing mainline games for this and only main party members (and as a warning it's gonna have mostly FF7 and FFX cause those are my faves)

1. Yuna (FFX)
Yuna is a very kind and compassionate character that I see a lot of myself in. I like that she always tries to see the best in others even if sometimes it backfires, and I also like that she can be tough and assertive if she really desires to. Her more carefree attitude in FFX2 is very inspiring too.

2. Tifa Lockhart (FF7)
I always found it interesting that she can have so much sex appeal and toughness to her yet can still be very tender and motherly to her friends. She never backs down from a challenge either.

3. Rikku (FFX)
Rikku's chipper personality and phobias make her really stand out amongst the generally stone-faced cast of FFX. She's just cute as hell and I like optimistic personalities.

4. Kimahri Ronso (FFX)
I loved Kimahri as a kid, I named my favorite stuffed animal after him lol (which I still own). Who doesn't live a big ol' tiger? His devotion to Yuna is admirable and his story with his clan members had something interesting parts.

5. Vincent Valentine (FF7)
Obviously, as the big horror guy I am, I love Vincent. His various forms call-out several famous horror monsters while still being memorable and original. I think he has the best backstory of the FF7 cast too, except mayyyyybe Cid.

6. Yuffie Kisaragi (FF7)
She has a really fun introduction to joining the party and it's funny how she can be kind of a jerk to the party at times, like the whole stealing your stuff thing. Never really cared too much about her daddy issues though.

7. Vivi Ornitier (FF9)
Really striking design and a powerful arc that serves as one of the best in the series as he grows more comfortable with his powers.

8. Paine (FFX2)
Bit of goth girl bias here from me, but I also like her relationship with the other Gullwings and that even she can get in on the fun once in awhile.

9. Auron (FFX)
The walking definition of cool and collected. He has a satisfying relationship with Tidus and I like the twist involving his character.

10. Balthier (FF12)
Wouldn't be a list without this absolutely charming and roguish leading man.

80s comedy films

1. Heathers
Incredibly dark and cynical film, kind of reminds me of a teen version of American Psycho. It's scary at times but still manages to have laughs despite that, often times just from the ridiculousness of it all.

2. Ghostbusters
This is almost peak Bill Murray (he's slightly better in Groundhog Day). Everything they do with ghosts is endlessly clever and the script is witty and fast-paced, ensuring minute-to-minute laughs.

3. Beetlejuice
The sight gags in this film are out-of-this world inventive. Michael Keaton also plays one of the biggest sleazeballs of all time and it's fantastic.

4. This is Spinal Tap!
Inventive, unrelenting take down not only of rock stardom, but of these type of documentaries too. Stonehenge is a legendary scene.

5. The Breakfast Club
They get so much mileage not just from a talented cast with excellent chemistry, but also in their confined location, using it to service an unbelievable amount of gags. It's also very touching, which balances out the hilarity quite a bit.

6. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Though Broderick can come across as dickish at times, it's mostly a great film filled with rebellious spirit and making the most out of life.

7. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Deft directing from Hughes and the incredible duo of Martin & Candy elevate a potentially cliche film from anyone else. A real sweet film.

8. Airplane!
Love the melding of different types of comedy here, from the slapstick to the visual. It's one of the greatest satires ever.

9. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Exemplifies how much of a nightmare Christmas can become sometimes, and Chevy Chase's rage-fuelled monologue at the film's climax is the perfect release of that pent-up frustration. Yet, the film still makes time to find the positives in it all.

10. Back to the Future
Marty and Doc are a great pair, and there's a lot of laughs that come from the time travel concept.

Sonic characters

1. Shadow the Hedgehog
When I was 12/13, Shadow was my favorite VG character. Still hold a little piece of that to this day. Edginess for life.

2. Dr. Eggman
I always thought his various inventions were pretty cool, especially his main mode of transport.

3. Fang the Sniper
A badass character that should've been in more Sonic games.

4. Sonic the Hedghehog
Pretty fun character to play as, GOTTA GO FAST

5. E-102 Gamma
His sections were a blast in SA and a surprisingly emotional story for a Sonic game.

6. Rouge the Bat
She's kinda like Ada in anthropomorphic form.

7. Metal Sonic
Rock on! \m/

8. Tails Doll
Mainly for the creep factor.

9. E-123 Omega
Neat design and I like him paired up with Rogue and Shadow.

10. Gerald Robotnik
When I was younger I found his insanity pretty creepy and weird for a Sonic game.

weird creepy ambient/tension vgm

1. Resident Evil - Macabre Hallway

See eariler.

2. Devil May Cry - Ancient Castle Stage

When you think of Devil May Cry, you probably don't think of the existential dread of a clock banging away your short existence as heart the spirits of the past dance on, echoing throughout the halls of a once lively place that now lies dead and stagnant.

3. Clock Tower - Don't Cry Jennifer

Love the heartbeat sounds at the beginning giving way to classic Psycho-style stabs to echo the slasher/giallo feeling of Clock Tower. Then we get some pretty sweet synth that fits the slow-mood of the game incredibly well.

4. Resident Evil Code: Veronica - The Suspended Doll

This is a somewhat infamous track I think, it's extremely cerebral and at points it feels like someone is about to sneak up from behind and hurt you.

5. Silent Hill 3 - Clockwork Little Happiness

Okay maybe I have a thing for loud bangs that shake me to the core. There's just something hypnotic about it. I also like the little spoken word passage at the end.

6. Resident Evil - Second Floor Mansion

This is an absolutely nostalgic classic for me. It's simple yet so sinister.

7. Ecco the Dolphin - Undercaves

I'm just an adorable little dolphin and I want to find my pod again but there's this creepy music playing and there's no air and oh god I want to go hooooome.

8. Silent Hill 3 - Prayer

The nightmarish chanting and the unrecognizable metal banging and scratching is what hell is made of. It's really well done how the prayer drops out near the end, leaving only the metal in its wake.

9. Outlast 2 - Christian Ambient Theme 3

There is nothing holy or Christian about this. I really like the variation of sounds they used to really craft the right rural atmosphere.

10. Thief Gold - Into the Maw of Chaos

It's pretty sparse but it's just how I like it. It feels haunted and unwelcoming and oh my god, that slight little giggling. Geeeez.

Real life blonde girls.

1. Taylor Swift
So adorable, so cute, so dorky, great sense of humor, and makes great songs! What's not to love? She even has a snake motif goin' on.

2. Kristen Bell
She literally has one of the most adorable laughs ever. She has a wonderful personality, very quirky and silly.

3. Avril Lavigne
I love punky girls and Avril has a nice bright style with her various outfits. She also pulls off classical, elegant outfits really well too. Another cutie.

4. Taylor Momsen
She's a badass, and exudes sex appeal. She's bold but can also be shy and quiet too which I like.

5. Amanda Seyfried
Mainly because of Mean Girls, she plays a ditz really well.

6. Carrie Underwood
Looks beautiful in anything she wears, whether it's country-style daisy dukes or more mom-oriented outfits.

7. Shantel VanSanten
She has a gorgeous smile and a very cute, slim face.

8. Miranda Lambert
I love her country style and tough attitude, that's always very attractive to me.

9. Emily VanCamp
I crushed on her super-hard when I used to watch Revenge. Love that high-class persona hiding sneaky plans.

10. Gwen Stefani
Age has not blemished her one bit, not that I would mind. It's impressive is all.

10. Parasite Eve - Arise Within You

It's the game's battle theme, much like Waterfall. Also like Waterfall, Arise's trance-like synths keep the player calm and focused while a more frantic electronic beat battles with it to try and break the player's nerves. It's not a track that invokes horror or much fear at all really, but it's still a catchy track I love listening to.

Survival horror VGM

1. Silent Hill 3 - You're Not Here

An excellent guitar-driven track with beautiful, passionate vocals from Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. You can feel the emotion in the song's climax and it gives me the chills every time.

2. Resident Evil - Macabre Hallway

My quintessential ambient piece. It is absolutely haunting; a low-grumble permeates the underbelly of the track, as if the mansion itself was breathing in anticipation of your eventual death. I love the slight use of rain sounds, a subtle cue that trends towards sadness and longing.

3. Silent Hill 2 - Theme of Laura

An absolute VGM classic for good reason. It juggles many emotions through-out its run-time, from crushing loneliness to desperate determination. The variation of instruments used in this track is impressive, ranging from the primary heavy guitar to the mandolin. The track's heavy nature balanced with the more melancholic sounds perfectly captures the game's various shades of horror.

4. Koudelka - Waterfall

I discussed this track at length in my most recent horror rankings, so I won't go on too long here. It is one of the battle themes of Koudelka, and it has a strong open-aired feeling of freedom that at the same time invokes caution and importance. I've easily left this track on repeat for upwards of an hour at times just because of how calm and focused it makes me feel.

5. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis - City of Ruin

This is a very key track for the game, so memorable I can pinpoint the exact moment when it begins to play in game. It exudes all the central motifs of the game, from the sorrow of a city's downfall to the pounding heart-beat of escaping from the game's titular antagonist. While playing, you can feel the track working its magic on you, making you second-guess your every step, especially after hearing the news from Brad of a monster killing off remaining S.T.A.R.S. members.

6. Haunting Ground - Endless Zero

Bells and fragmented industrial beats punctuate one of the most emotionally shattering vocal performances found in a video game. It's a track that scratches on the nerves and is reflective of the journey Fiona goes through in the game's events, a callous commentary on unwanted sexual advances and a static, empty feeling that comes with being violated against your will.

7. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water - In This Cage

Tsukiko Amano puts her all into this very powerful performance reflecting on the game's curse and its terrifying nature of eternal entrapment.

8. Resident Evil 2 - The Front Hall

Nostalgic as hell. It feels grand and epic but at the same time those feelings are towards something ultimately empty and foreboding. The front hall of the RPD is huge and this track has an echo to it that really works well in tandem with the environment.

9. Resident Evil: Outbreak - Main Theme

A classically focused track with piano and violin, I love the various build-ups in the song, especially at 1:27. It invokes memories of Resident Evil 2 and 3 but also has its own feeling to it, as life as you know it is about to become irreversibly changed forever.
