I was exploring this with a counselor. I know I look deeply for my values, but I disagree with many people - so what does that mean in terms of being open-minded? I said "On the outside, yes, but on the inside, no", because I am usually skeptical of the beliefs that counter mine.

That being said, I think I will entertain an idea far longer than anyone I may be arguing with. If I disagree with something, I am going to spend hours...and hours...watching and reading about those values. Whereas I feel that those I argue or discuss things with do not. Or at least my roommate refuses to read anything I hand him, or watch anything I suggest. I mean, he's old. But I find it really bizarre when someone won't check out the opposite of what they believe.

idk parents like this always overexplain everything, and I feel like they never made themselves actually approachable to talk to about real emotions. Of course, I am drawing from allegorical evidence, but I know many people who found their parents unapproachable for emotional counsel. The "hey bud, it's all good, forget about it!" approach.

Well, it depends on whether or not you want people to remember and care about your product. That's kind of an issue when competing for shelf space against hundreds of companies with similar products.

It's hard to compensate somebody when they're dead. And even today, you can buy the rights to a likeness instead of paying royalties on that likeness. In fact, I'm not sure any company paid royalties on likeness back when they started using her image. More importantly, the image itself was changed multiple times over the years so it's technically not even depicting the original person any more.

Well, maybe when you're old enough to buy your own groceries you'll understand.

tbh, companies have gone out of business because of that.

Again, once you start shopping for your own groceries maybe you'll understand. Once you do, you'll realize how useless most shop employees are.

I don't think many people are going to be asking store employees about the new Aunt Jemima. And it's possible the store employees won't know. They can basically take you to the syrup aisle... They may not even know that it's the new Aunt Jemima... Both the customer and employee make just think they're out...

Well, I think it makes sense to have a point of view on it, seeing as the 'aunt jemima' pictured was never compensated properly for her image. Why people give a crap beyond that, and 'brand recognition' after changing it...dude. It's syrup. Just buy it. Or try another one. The original case of changing it, I get. People whining about what their packaging looks like when it's plain....really? I'll take plain packaging? I don't need to be marketed to, nor do I really want to be?

It's not a "story," it's a proposed solution. And you know that if they just swapped the character and name as I described then you'd have many of the same people complaining that they'd done that and demanding that it be put back the way it was. Although even if renaming it Aunt Janine didn't create enough backlash to go back to the original, that would STILL be an improvement over the current bland, forgettable name.

Should have just replaced her with a white woman and changed the name. Then those same critics could have accused them of white-washing and they would pushed for the brand to go back to Aunt Jemima, at which point they'd stand by the original design because they felt they stopped racism. Problem solved.
