Tbh you shouldn't be thinking that hard about the Babysitter movies. They're best enjoyed as the gorey hilarious nonsense they are.

Okay, I am glad there was a good reason for it.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Lodge! I thought it was just so freaking tense the whole time and there were a lot of really good directorial choices.

MILD SPOILERS
Like how they treat the girlfriend like a monster for the beginning of the movie. You don't see her for such a long time... the kids look at her with such disdain like she's awful. That whole first act is done so well.

Honestly, I'd talk more about it, because it is such an interesting movie to talk about I think, but I don't want anyone to get spoiled on it. But there's so much small stuff in this movie that's just so expertly done, and they do a great job with this story and you just get such a tense feeling you get with Hereditary the whole time concerning the drama of it all. It honestly felt a lot like It Comes At Night in a lot of ways. I don't know how they did it, but they pulled it off in a movie primarily about two kids and their father's girlfriend in a cabin.

Huge recommend though!

I have been on record saying that if you watch Midsommer's first 15 minutes and last 10 minutes, you have a masterpiece of film. Because that all tells a fine story of having your feelings invalidated.

But I'm with charon here when I say this script, for the most part, isn't good. It felt like a meandering mess where you could trim out at least another half an hour of this movie and miss nothing. And I say this with my first viewing knowing exactly what's going on as I'm watching it. It was obvious the cult was seducing her. I have a difficult time believing anyone didn't come out with that feeling then. And you don't need foreshadowing when you're watching the movie and you just know what's going to happen throughout it. I felt like it was a very predictable movie, which isn't bad usually, but it is when every step of it is boring.

I liked the soundtrack too, and I like the overarching story, but I think the execution was severely mishandled, which is why I find the idea of people actually loving the movie as much as you guys do shocking. Like, I'm not trying to knock you both, but I just can't wrap my head around it because I thought it was a massive letdown and just... bumbled. And I say this being very excited for it and thinking Hereditary is one of the best horror films of all time. I had no idea where anything in Hereditary was going, even with all the foreshadowing. I literally predicted most of what was happening in Midsommar scenes before it happened.

I don't mean this as any sort of a dig as anyone who likes Midsommar, but I absolutely don't understand why you do, and I think it's too much of a mess of a movie without a clear direction to be nominated for anything, with moments that make it difficult to be taken seriously.

It feels unfair calling Parasite a thriller, imo. It felt more like a drama for like 90% of the movie.

@Johnbobb

I absolutely agree with all of your cons.

I expected so much more out of the hallucinations and such. But what we got from it was relatively tame, especially when towards the beginning of the movie they set it up to do so much more. I think if they leaned more on that and less on the grotesquely awful gore and such, it would have been better. So at least we could be like "Wait, is all of the stuff ACTUALLY as bad as it looks or is it just a hallucination?" And we're just not sure WHEN people are high as hell or when they're sober.

I also found the twists to be pretty non-twists. Like, I predicted literally everything that would happen, which is shocking given I was on the edge of my seat with no idea where Hereditary was going the whole way through. But I was more disappointed by how so much of the movie did feel like Hereditary as well. I felt it especially as much during the sex scene. With just the weirdness of a naked cult, it felt so many more times like Hereditary than it had to.

The fact that it DID seem funny took me out of a feeling of dread. Especially when it's just outrageously obvious what's going on at every step of the way. "Oh, Simon is gone? He's absolutely fucking dead." "Oh, the other girl is gone? She's absolutely dead." "Vape guy is gone? He's fucking dead." "Chidi Annakendrick is going to take a picture of the book? Well, he's just sealed his fate."

And when you are understanding the overall theme of the story and where it's heading, her choosing to sacrifice her boyfriend makes all the sense in the world and isn't surprising at all. That said, the way they tell that story and the symbolism is good.

The imagery of at the beginning of the movie, her boyfriend letting her lay on his lap while silent and just petting her compared to the women all grabbing her, literally holding her, and screaming and sharing in her grief is perfect. The ending is a pretty perfect shot too where she is able to scream and cry and then she looks back and notices everyone else doing the same, and she smiles because she finally has a family who unconditionally shares in her grief. That is GOOD stuff. But you took us on this unnecessarily weird and long trip to get there. And that's where the problem lies.

I just don't understand why you introduce this hallucination drug trip thing and then do NOTHING truly clever with it. Total missed opportunity imo.

I saw Midsommar.

I don't think it was quite as good as some people are saying. Compared to Hereditary, it seems meandering a lot more, with random unsettling stuff just to be unsettling. Like, I get a lot of the symbolism, and I get the overall theme of it, but I feel like it took a long time to get there, and a lot of the movie just felt like fluff.

I normally love movies like this, but this just didn't feel like it had enough substance in it for the length it was, and the unsettling weirdness of it all just didn't seem like it had enough of a purpose for me.

Probably don't recommend to most people.

Midsommar definitely delivers. It felt like one of those dreams you have that seems to last an entire lifetime until you wake up, holy smokes.

Probably goes without saying but Ari Aster is a visual and thematic genius who uses grief to profound effect.

Really glad to hear this!

I can't believe you spoiled that for me.

But it may be the reason. It's been considered a joke for a while, but it has a certain iconic value at this point that can't be denied. Like, my girlfriend for instance refuses to see it because she says she remembers these movies when she was a kid and was more afraid of Chucky than anything else. And I know other people who feel similarly.

It's in a very weird spot.

I watched the Autopsy of Jane Doe last night. For a genre like that, it was surprisingly compelling because they just kept it simple. Maybe a little too much gore for me (and I can handle a lot). But it was actually practical amounts of gore?

Still, as far as a movie where two people are stuck in a haunted morgue, it's probably one of the best I've seen.

So I want to talk about Bird Box.

This movie feels very, very disjointed. So do you want to be a creepy cult movie or a hidden monster movie or a psychological threat movie? Why try to be all three? All three of them together feels so strange to me. Because by the end, none of them actually feels like a total threat because none of them get a focus. Like, at the beginning the psychological threat kills tons of people. But then sometimes it doesn't kill people and it just makes a creepy cult of people who want them to see the monster/psychological threat, but the monster never feels like a monster because all it is is just a gust of wind, and the focus is on this cult group of people who seem okay except they just really want you to look at the invisible monster thing.

Like, if you're going to do it this way, don't keep showing an invisible monster running around and chasing people. Keep the camera tight on them. It would have made it much more horrifying. Or show only shadows or something.

And in terms of it being a growth for Sandra Bullock's motherhood, it's about as subtle as a freaking brick to the face. Like, it's not even clever. After five years you can't name your fucking children? That's stupid. You're stupid. You just call them girl and boy until your former pregnancy doctor shames you into it? And why include the pregnancy doctor at the end? It could have been literally anyone in that scene.

That said, I didn't have a bad time watching this movie. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I feel like a lot of movies have done everything a lot better than this, but this movie was not without it's clever moments (like the car GPS stuff), but for every moment you had of that, you have freaking Gary pulling out his magic notebook full of creepy drawings.

Also, concerning the WWE writer discussion.

Sami Zayn on Talk is Jericho managed to more effectively explain the writing system in a way people can understand that actually is more reasonable. Granted, he still sounds like it's a frustrating system that he doesn't exactly seem too fond of, but he basically said the following:

We shouldn't blame the writers because there are way too many moving parts to the show and that there are so many channels and avenues they need to go through to make any sort of changes to the show (but he makes it seem like he doesn't have any idea what is going to happen on RAW until it happens, which contradicts what Jimmy Jacobs made it seem like with the road writers talking with talent to figure out the next route). Because if they change one thing, it disrupts the whole show and how it works, because there is a certain amount of time allotted to the entire show. Sami also says that if he wants to change one thing, he has to go through the writers, the road agents, and he has to make his way up the chain of command to the top for Vince's approval to get it changed, and that takes way too much time and since the show is sometimes put together so close to the air time, that might not be possible. Jericho chimed in that it's ultimately up to Vince anyway and Vince has his reasons (though, admittedly, he did seem more frank and probably the most anti-Vince I have ever heard him to be, which is mildly critical).

So like, this all makes a lot more sense than anything Jimmy Jacobs has to tell us. But it does prove this entire system is still absolutely busted, and Sami seems to understand that. And Sami seems to conflate the argument that people blame the writers for pushes and such when I don't think fans say that for the most part, so I don't agree with his reasoning here, especially when people who complain about the writers usually blame them for actual writing issues and crappy segments, which granted aren't always their fault in their defense. But the fact that everyone acts like this is a delicately balanced house of cards and that one thing can disrupt it (despite them having to re-write and change things so close to the actual show starting and giving it a poor foundation as a result), and that they are purely at the whim of this broken system or more horribly Vince McMahon just proves this system is absolutely awful and should be changed to something that isn't a total mess that hurts everyone except for the one guy who keeps ruining everything.

Example of "wait and see" working: women's revolution. The initial 3-on-3-on-3 thing with the Bellas was dreadful and went on for months. People claimed the revolution had failed and that it had been a disaster. However, it was ultimately only a temporary thing and it led to the women having probably the MotN at Wrestlemania.

All I'm going to say is that there is absolutely no reason why any fan of anything should have to suffer through something as awful as those 3-on-3-on-3 storylines that went on for months and be expected to wait and see.

If something sucks, they should rightly be called out for it. But they shouldn't be excused for making people sit through abject garbage like that storyline so they could eventually make something people might want to enjoy. What they should be doing is not making garbage and instead make something people enjoy so we don't even have to have these conversations and taking a "wait and see" approach. Like why should we pat them on the back for making something bad just because eventually, months later, they managed to do something right with it? And why should we have to be optimistic about something because sometimes, occasionally, maybe, they might actually turn a bad thing into something okay?

WWE created this attitude with their fans. If they made good content then people wouldn't complain nearly as much. That's not even an argument. And if that is an argument you'd want to make, then my response to it is that once WWE makes steady, good content, you can "wait and see" if the attitude of the fans change.

I'd just do the thing I do with my girlfriend. "Just watch one episode to see if you like it." It usually gets her to at least try it!

Glad other people seem to enjoy this show! I think what I'm most happy about this series is that Sabrina seems like a perfect witch who can do no wrong like she's untouchable, but it turns out they let her be flawed. It would have been really easy for them to keep letting her be the best.

Also, I think my favorite character is Zelda. Because when they have the nightmare episode we go through everyone's nightmare and it's some horrific stuff, and then Zelda's nightmare is just that Lucifer comes over and prefers Hilda's cooking to Zelda's and she just has this ridiculously overdramatic meltdown over it. It was the absolute best. Who is everyone else's favorite?

No problem my man! I love the hell out of Sonic Mania and Pyre is a really, really good time too. Never played Sunset Overdrive, but I'm sure it's fun too! Glad you like them.

Can we recast Ezra Miller and try again with the whole Flash thing?

I found him horribly offensive and lame in Justice League. Like, I am insulted they expected me to root for a loser like him.
