I would recommend just enjoying the history and videos for what they are and not researching the behind the scenes reddit drama. When there's an archive of everything you've said since you were 13, there's going to be some stuff you're not so proud of when you're now semi-famous and in your 30s.

By the way, like, if whatever the drama was was no big deal you can just say that and I'd believe you, but "there's going to be some stuff you're not so proud of" like... I mean yeah but I won't handwave EVERYTHING with that

It's worth remembering that Punch Out is the series that he has the most experience with and he makes videos about what he knows or what interests him rather than aiming for a broad spectrum of games

Ideally, other people besides him would make stuff about the histories of other things, but only a few people have and nobody's caught on like he has - nor have many people produced works as good as his

I've made my peace with the Metroidvania name. It's an appropriate genre name for "a game belonging to the lineage of games that include the Metroid series and the Castlevania series post-SOTN with their implied genre conventions".

I just have my head in my hands over the idea that Spelunky is "only a platformer, shut up about your meme genres, there is absolutely nothing worth interrogating about whether or not this game might have anything in common with roguelikes" like any game that behaves like a platformer is just a platformer no matter what it is while roguelikes have this complicated checklist of things - it's so dumb

also having to lie about Crypt of the Necrodancer's attributes because it would have landed under "Roguelike" in your tree otherwise and that wasn't convenient to you, lol (there are aspects of the Berlin Interpretation that would make Necrodancer not a roguelike (no resource management, time pressure for most characters), but they weren't included in any of the definitions in this chart, they just fucked up and said it wasn't tile-based/turn-based which it is)

Gone with the Wind's inflation-adjusted numbers are so insane that it's sort of difficult for me to wrap my head around - like it makes me wonder if adjusting for inflation doesn't really give an accurate picture either. Like, if Avatar, Star Wars 7, and Endgame all can't beat it, nothing will.

It's mildly annoying to me that it's always revenue that's reported rather than tickets sold - would give us a better idea of how popular the movie actually was, given the moving target of ticket prices.

Huh, for some reason I didn't realize that Star Wars had that much mainstream success straight out of the gate!

My mom was 8 or 9 when Star Wars was released in theaters and she still speaks glowingly of going to see it multiple times when it came out - it was a earth-shattering hit, just a huge fucking deal. It was well-received by critics too - I feel like it's easy to forget this but Star Wars was a Best Picture nominee!

It actually is a very good run setting bias aside, it's a well executed run of an interesting game with good commentary, I know people who don't know dowolf who thought it was a highlight

Funnily enough, that was my favorite episode of What If, but it was also... kind of the best appearance of those characters

I think it makes a lot more sense to use Lugia than Kyogre just because like, in the logic of the Pokemon world Kyogre is this ridiculous, cataclysmic force of nature, whereas Lugia is not really on that level, so it feels less out of place to see them hanging out
