Wow DuckTales at 6. Honestly, I've never gotten the hype over DuckTales, I think it's a playable but mediocre NES game. It's not, like, bad, but it wouldn't even make my top 100.

Man I dunno. Maybe I'm just built different. I'm really good at this type of puzzle game and he just seems really flustered by Wario's Woods. I don't really find it flustering at all.

God I can't believe he put Wario's Woods below Yo! Noid, an actual shit game, lol. Like I know the difficulty of doing a huge list like this, it's so dependent on your mood day to day, but jesus CHRIST, Yo Noid?

Man I dunno. Like, he liked Krazy Kreatures but is it really almost 100 spots better than Wario's Woods? I think Wario's Woods is like kinda straightforwardly the better game.

Man, that ranking of Wario's Woods is wild. Wario's Woods is good! Vaaaastly better puzzle game than Yoshi, too, which he only put just below it. Wario's Woods and Dr. Mario are my biggest disagreements with him on this list so far, even more than putting Rygar in the top 5 or Ninja Gaiden at 17th.

IMO Dr. Mario is really only interesting if you speedrun it. If you speedrun it (or play it vs) it's hellllllla interesting. The problem with it as a casual puzzle game, imo, is that it naturally gets easier as the level goes on, which is sort of weird. After you've cleared like 25% of the viruses, the rest is just cleanup - everyone gets to that point at the end where there's just one virus left and a bunch of garbage and it's just cleanup but you're not in danger of losing. Puzzle games feel like they should get more difficult as time goes on so this feels like a weird aspect to Dr. Mario where so much of it is cleanup.

I LOVE Dr. Mario though because I speedrun it, and that completely changes everything because now really efficient and clever usage of your pills MATTERS, and the time's still ticking no matter how many viruses you clear so the lack of danger doesn't matter.

I feel like he was pretty hard on Tetris. It's fucking Tetris. It's not one of my favorite NES games of all time, but it's one of the easiest games to have a nice time playing on the system. Then again, most of the games above Tetris are pretty decent.

I just don't get what everyone sees in Rygar. It looks bad, it sounds bad, it doesn't play very fun, I just don't get it?? And I'm pretty amenable to NES jank - I play a lot of NES games recreationally to this day, I'm no stranger - but it just has too much NES jank for my tastes. I just don't get Rygar.

I think Mike Tyson's Punch-Out is one of the very rare NES games where, unless you're already personally familiar with it, a modern understanding of video games doesn't teach you how to play it immediately. If you've never played a Punch-Out game before and you play MTPO, figuring out how to play well is not going to be obvious to you until you've practiced it quite a bit. There aren't a lot of games on the NES I can think of that are like this - most of them are fairly easily 'solved' by the accumulated knowledge and skill of any modern gamer but MTPO remains mysterious and challenging. It's a weirdly well-aged game in that way. I think it'd be kind of fun to make a list of NES games that are challenging for a modern audience because of their unique game design (not just because they are super hard and unforgiving).

I don't want to get into an unrelated fight in this topic so I'll just summarize my position: when a game is about discovery, I want to preserve as many of those discoveries as possible for as many people as possible. Some of us prefer not to have the first mysteries of the game scratched off already. If spoilers don't bother you and you want to know the game's conceit before going in you can just look up what the game is on wikipedia or something.

Interesting article. For all we make fun of the Game Awards, a lot of game developers clearly do care about them.

EDIT: Also this tidbit about Elden Ring boosting in sales thanks to TGA.

https://www.eurogamer.net/elden-ring-sales-surge-attributed-to-the-game-awards-win
I know we kinda razz on the TGA for being the dumb schlock entertainment awards show that it is, but I'm a firm believer that this sort of thing really does matter to the industry and I think it's good discussion fodder to have landed on an awards show that we consider to be like, canonical in the sort of way the oscars are - a similarly dumb schlock entertainment awards show. I'm glad we have it. Honestly, it's about as close to consensus GOTY choices as we're going to get - I think they do better than the oscars do at this.

For my purposes, this does include action-adventures and RPGs that do normally have a lot of puzzles in them - I just mean not stuff that's explicitly meant to have hard puzzles in it like The Witness, Baba is You, etc.

The other puzzle game topic got me thinking about this and I'm trying to think of good examples. I know there's puzzles that have made people quit non-puzzle games before but I can't think of what they are right now.

The only thing that kinda bugged me about The Witness was finding a puzzle that you needed more context to solve from another area.

I mean technically you could probably solve all puzzles on first glance (probably, I don't know for sure) but there are definitely areas that are designed to teach you the concepts behind puzzles. So sometimes you'll stumble on something and bang your head against a wall until you run into the 1 puzzle that teaches you how to solve it and suddenly it's easy.
I felt like understanding that you needed more context to solve a puzzle that you'd just stumbled upon was kind of part of the game, although sometimes I solved stuff early anyway

Normally I don't really believe these types of narratives - but good lord it is depressing just how inevitable it was that penn state would win every game but lose to ohio state and michigan. I mean I don't have a horse in the race, but I know the pain of following a team that you know will win all the games it's supposed to but be unable to take the next step. it's weirdly much worse than watching a team scrap out a 6-win season and go to a crappy bowl because you just stop even caring
